People are allowed to use the Fediverse differently than you do.
No, your preferences are not norms or mores.
Not every post is about you. (Almost none of them are, in fact.)
Not every piece of advice has to be relevant to you to be valuable.
Nobody owes you a hashtag.
People can post pictures of things you find uninteresting or distasteful. (Yes, they should use alt text.)
People are allowed to post their work.
People are allowed to *promote* their work.
People are allowed to ask for help, including monetary help.
There is more than one thing going on in the world right now.
There is more than one way to help.
That joke is not about politics and doesn't benefit from your reply trying to make it about Trump.
That woman wasn't asking a question.
And yes, she gets her own joke without you explaining it to her.
Linux is *sometimes* the answer.

You know me, I'm a sucker for a dogpile on AI and Big Tech. But my luddism has limits.
Prime example: machine translation. Machine translation is a goddamn miracle.
Human translation is amazing. A human being translated the edition of 'The Three-Body Problem' that I read. Humans wrote the English script for the 'Squid Game' dub that I watched.
But right now there's a conversation in Portuguese happening in my replies, and I'm following along just fine because of machine translation.

People who liked quote-tweets and who like the idea of quote-boosts here generally want them because readers will see the comment or joke and the earlier post it refers to in the same time, in a can’t-miss-it presentation. I’m attaching a screenshot that shows what this looks like in Ivory (a client that already supports pseudo-quote-posts).
My debate partner in this case was suggesting because someone could click or tap on my post and scroll up to find the original, it was the same thing and/or the quote presentation was unnecessary.

The canonical example are the Quote Toot/Quote Post wars.
I am in favor of them, because I often want to share something WITH context for why I'm sharing (the proverbial "retweets are not endorsements"). Or I have a comment or joke I want to publish to my followers but that only makes sense because it builds on the original.
I said that once here and was told, "Why don't you just reply to the original and then boost your reply? That's what I do."
To which I pointed out that even if I also boosted the original, there was no guarantee anyone would see both of them (or see them close enough to each other to make sense). My debate partner said, "Well, if somebody wants the context, they can just click on my post and scroll up."
Which is nonsense. He was saying, "Well, it works for me," but it was actually a thinly-disguised, "Well, I don't care about that and you shouldn't either." He either didn't understand or simply dismissed the problem statement.

I’m listening to the audiobook of Tim Harford’s ‘The Data Detective.’ Current chapter is about missing data. He’s talking about, for instance, clinical trials that failed to include women in the subject pool, but it’s called to mind for me accounts of (and advice for) success that don’t really account for the all the domestic and business-of-life work being done for the author or the subject.
Who is taking care of the kids while you are “crushing it?”
Even Marie Kondo said, “Ha ha, just kidding” after she had kids.
