I have a MNP 14,3 with miserable WiFi and no sound on Ubuntu 24.04.
Don't buy Apple hardware.

Dead Fedi,
Regrettably I'll be soon in the market for a new mobile phone.
These days I'm using them as little as possible. I've shifted my computing needs to platforms I have some control over.
But I still need one for:
- making and taking phone calls
- tethering
- running my online bank's authentication app
Realistically this means an Android phone.
I value reliability, security, product life and sustainability.
What should I get?

That's unfortunately what it's looking like.
It's the lesson to draw from the outcome of not having honored the guarantees given to Ukraine in return for giving up their nuclear deterrent, which can only be described as betrayal.
It may sound like madness, but at this point it would make sense for Poland, Baltics and Nordics to secure a joint nuclear deterrent.
To ward off against Russian *and* US blackmail, given insufficient certainty about whether France and the UK (never mind the US) would really use theirs.

It depends on how you define it, but even 1.5% is quite significant considering full recovery looks unlikely for those most affected, the odds of LC are repeated or even aggravated on reinfections, and people are getting frequently reinfected.
That's even before considering less well understood longer term risks as at least some people (maybe many) don't fully clear the virus and may be storing up trouble for later.
I'm going to leave you with Augie's list of studies covering increased risk of all sorts of conditions (including I bet many of the ones your friend doctors are concerned with) and damage to many organs and systems.
In case you ever want to look. You may also want to check excess mortality figures. People are still being harmed and dying as a result of COVID, beyond the accute phase.

It's all quite well documented if you want to look.
I prefer not to play disability roulette with this virus.
Too bad it's a hard game to stay out of when almost everybody else is playing.
At least essential spaces and activities ought to be kept safe through mitigations: health care, public transport, schools

Indeed. For me, anything can be a machine. It's not a category of things, it's a way of looking at them.
A machine doesn't need a purpose. It can be designed or evolved. Or an idealised construct that you can't physically realise, like a Turing machine.
That's definitely a machine in my view. I claim that use of the word and I'm not negotiating 😀
All that matters if that you are concerned with how it works in a certain way.
It's just a way of looking at some aspect of the real or imagined world (in the broadest sense) in terms of parts, their relationships and some rules that can explain the properties or behaviour of the system.
Machine = System seen as governed by rules (mechanisms) described in some formalism at some level of detail. A view of the object reduced to that system, as accurately as needed or possible.
For me, if there's an operational definition it will be about how the thinker approaches the object of this system, not really the object itself.
I could be wrong, but it looks to me you are looking for criteria for separate machines from non-machines in objective reality?
If that's the case then I really can't think of any without going into metaphysics, and I'm not equipped for contributing there.

I don't see "machine" as a category of things. I see it as a way of looking at things and thinking about them.
In terms of parts that work together to do something, through "mechanisms" that you hope to understand.
You can look at aspects of almost anything as a machine, including all the examples you listed. It doesn't mean they *are* machines.

From where I stand, at this point I don't see much difference between the far left, the far right or pretty much anything in between when it comes to masking, reducing transmission or keeping health care safe. Unlike in climate action where there is clearly a difference.
Everybody found their way of dismissal and denial everywhere in the spectrum.
I don't see any will for collective action or solidarity in either. Leftists are apparently just as OK with the very uneven impacts of unrestricted transmission as the right.
Both left and the right are also quite vocal about what to do with our failing health care systems. None of it includes infection prevention.
In case you wonder, my politics are center-left, and I too imagined there would be more will and solidarity on the left. I don't see it now.

Não sei como são na verdade as curvas de degradação dos filtros. Deve depender muito do que anda no ar. E suponho que deve ser diferente para os vários componentes do filtro. Suspeito que o de carbono activado deve perder rendimento mais rápido.
Não sei o que o purificador está a medir para decidir quando acende a luz. Pode ser simplesmente tempo.
Na práctica teria que medir desempenho para saber.
Acredito que limpar o pre-filtro regularmente ajude a extender a vida. É o que tenho feito.

Eu tenho o Plasmawave no meu desligado porque não sei ao certo se produz VOC (compostos orgânicos voláteis) ou não nem em que quantidade. Provavelmente até nem produz muito (ver artigo), e o filtro de carbono activado iria remover bastante mas o peritos que eu tenho seguido são algo cépticos em relação a tudo o que vá para além de filtrar o ar, que é o essencial. A costa sul da península ibérica oferece dias que permitem banho em qualquer dos 12 meses do ano - confirmo pessoalmente, incluindo Dezembro e Janeiro.
Obviamente em alguns meses é preciso alguma sorte com os dias, mas Agosto é garantidamente de fugir todos os 31 dias.

Yes, the very rich can move away from danger for longer than our window of opportunity stays open.
But the bulk of the support base for continuing business-as-usual and resisting large scale mobilization for climate action cannot.
That's going to boil over sometime in the next decade or perhaps even this one.
It will be too late for easy-to-manage change. That boat sailed last century.
The much slower than necessary progress we have now will make the situation very hard by then, so it will be dramatic, chaotic and violent.
It might spin politically out of control.
We can improve our chances a lot by accelerating climate action now.

Um computador portátil? Corre Linux nisso. Não é problema num computador com 12/13 anos. Há distribuições/ambientes até mais magrinhas que esse computador vai correr melhor que o Windows ou MacOS corrente.

It's beyond our knowledge to know exactly how close we are to easy transmission between people. It may not even be possible. if it is close it may be inevitable due to current practices all over the world - it will happen somewhere.
But if nothing else, even if you are a selfish ghoul, you have to be an incredibly foolish ghoul not to take all the precautions you can to prevent it from starting *here*. If it starts here, we will not have any time to react, and we will suddenly be on the receiving end of border closures, travel bans and logistic chain shutdown as the rest of the world freaks out.

Eles não tinham valores de CADR e consumo para as varias velocidades, mas contactei-os e responderam-me:

Energy consumption (W): 3 / 7 / 10 / 23 / 55

CADR: 60 / 150 / 205 / 260 / 410
Energy consumption (W): 3,5 / 6 / 9 / 14 / 62
Com base nisso e noutros dados escolhi o WINIX ZERO S.
Infelizmente não me lembrei de perguntar por dB na altura.
Como podes ver há um salto grande em consumo de energia (e em ruído) da 2a maior velocidade para a maior (turbo).
Está em turbo só ocasionalmente mas a 2a maior velocidade que limpa 260 m3/h e gasta 14W é bastante práctica.
Se precisas de mais de 260 compra mais que um, um espaço maior é de qualquer forma melhor coberto por vários.
Tenho o Plasmawave desligado, pois não confio muito nele. Também não vejo utilidade no modo automático porque depende de um sensor de pó que não me parece fiável. Ajusto com base no nível de PM2.5 na zona e no meu nariz. Acho que em geral "bells & whistles" não valem a pena mas achei que as características básicas eram boas.
Construir uma caixa Corsi-Rosenthal também pode ser boa ideia, mas onde estou não bate certo economicamente, não se encontram os filtros aos preços dos EUA.

Eu estive a ver opções há uns meses e concluí que o "sweet spot" em termos de consumo de energia e barulho está em modelos que limpam cerca de 400m3/h na velocidade máxima e cerca de 250m3/h em velocidades com barulho que consigo ignorar. Custam na ordem dos 200€. Mais pequenos não valem a pena a menos que se esteja muito limitado de espaço porque são menos eficientes em energia e mais barulhentos para o mesmo CADR. Maiores também não, é melhor comprar vários para um espaço grande.
