I don't see "machine" as a category of things. I see it as a way of looking at things and thinking about them.
In terms of parts that work together to do something, through "mechanisms" that you hope to understand.
You can look at aspects of almost anything as a machine, including all the examples you listed. It doesn't mean they *are* machines.
