Do you feel like you have / need a regional / cultural practice or do you feel separated or isolated in your practice.
Not necessarily alone as in don't have a group with which to practice your craft, but do you feel like you have / haven't found what you really connect with yet?
I started out in folk magic as a kid, moved into witchcraft in the 90s, and now do both but much more connected to my folk practice.

1) Is there a difference between mediums communing with the dead, & the use of ritual to connect with the dead?
2) If so, what are steps you think need to be taken before the ritual (fasting, bathing/not bathing)
3) Do you think when performing a necromancy ritual that you are literally pulling the soul/being of the person from wherever they are to communicate with you or do you think they are just wandering around and you can talk to them?

I think it's important to make this distinction, especially for beginners, because there are people who practice ancestor worship, meaning they believe in obedience and submission to some of their deceased, while I think many are actually wanting to practice ancestor veneration.

With ancestor worship, the deceased is given a status like that of a god. Rituals might be more formal like that of the gods/goddesses in your practice. If your practice believes in a form of submission to your gods, your ancestors would receive the same obedience.

With ancestor veneration, you might place their photos out about the house, a pinch of their favorite tobacco or a shot glass of their drink. You might tell their stories. You might ask for their guidance in matters by signs. You might use their knife in your practice. You might make it part of your practice to tend to their gravesites.

There were lots of "calls to the altar" and being trained to be submissive.
One of the girls in my bunk told our counselor about not feeling safe in the house with her new stepdad and the counselor told her that she needed to give him time to adjust to having another woman in the household (meaning her....and GA was for girls in grades 1-6).

I was also raised in the Girls in Action program, which was created by the Woman's Missionary Union stemming from the Southern Baptist Convention.
It was like girls scouts but for girls who were being trained to do mission work. I remember going to camp every year and during the day we'd have all kinds of fun learning new skills, then at night we'd sit, stand, run up and down a makeshift church and be preached and made to feel guilty about sex, relationships, etc. 1/2

James Dobson was the assistant to Paul Popenoe & it greatly influenced his later teachings which scarred my childhood & early adulthood.
Mother was a huge Dobson fan. For 15 years after no contact in 2000, she sent me Dobson's books, signed me up for some letter club thing he had going on, pamphlets showed up at my door. It was harassment.
Between him & Pat Robertson, my childhood was a nightmare because my mom, who was already spiteful, got sucked into their teachings.
Glad he's gone.

This came recommended to me so I'm tuning in on audiobook today.
I really hate it when I find good books that have a virtual narrator. I know it's cheaper for the author, but I would much rather listen to you read your own story with a cat meowing in the background and a UPS truck roaring down the road than listen to a virtual author.

So I eat this at work and no one has heard of it before so I'm thinking it might be a Kentucky/southern thing?
Melt peanut butter and maple syrup together and put on toast, biscuits, pancakes.
I put it on my granola then add a bit extra syrup on top.

That was my first impression as well.

I grew up in the Western Coal Field region of Kentucky.
I remember laying in the backseat while my dad drove, windows down, and how the smell of sulphur would linger on your clothes and in your hair for hours later.

When I was little, I was very picky (only ate vegetables and beans). My mom would make me drink milk and every time I'd get sick. But public notices (paid for by the dairy industry) would pop on 8-12 times a day saying milk does a body good, so she kept forcing me to drink it.
Getting out on my own and not drinking it, I was like, wow, I don't have snotty head allergies anymore. Wow, my stomach doesn't hurt anymore....

It can get pretty bad for me. Like the Korean BBQ restaurant in town. I LOVE their food, but they have a TV in each booth, several on the main floor, LED lights running like crazy, loud speakers plus each tv is a different show.

My dad remembers being little and sitting on the parking lot of Eddyville prison while his dad was inside visiting his brothers.(My dad's uncle's)
They ran a little general store in Dixon & robbed and murdered a woman and got caught.
They got out & a while later, robbed someone else. One brother took the fall for both. While he was locked up, his brother shacked up with his girlfriend so when he got out, he killed both of them.
My mom's side was just as violent.

HAHA. I fell in love with them when I had a cold sweet potato, cranberry, red onion, walnut, and parsley salad with a vinaigrette. It was amazing! Now I make it every year at Thanksgiving since I don't like the marshmallow coated sweet potatoes.

We used to get a weekly farm share here but they stopped it during covid and the program hasn't started back up. I have corn, green beans, okra, sunflowers, tomatoes, and peppers in the ground.
Beans washed out four times this year. UGH. But I think I'll have 11 plants.

My friend bought some wooden dice and has been decorating them and I thought about getting some, using my pyrography kit, and doing some cleromancy with them.

Does anyone else practice southern American folk magic?
I'm building some kits from cigar boxes as giveaways (might sell some) for the market.

...those sorts of things.

This grave is in Eastern Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.
There is a doc about the cemetery called Facing East which tells its disturbing history. I've included to text images telling part of the story so read at your own risk.
Ada's grave has been used by local witches for at least the last 15 years since I've been visiting there. The star on her headstone, a symbol of the Order of the Eastern Star, must have confused a witch years ago and Ada became a legend.

Like have your written down your ancestors and some of their stories so that you can pass them down to yourn?
My mother was very abusive so I'm not claiming her in my line. And I think it's important to list that for my future grands if they choose to work the path.

Seriously!
My body is aching today.
At this rate, with the freaking rain, it's going to be the end of summer before my roof is up.
Still, it's worth saving ourselves all that money and we're rebuilding porches as we go along so that will be nice, too.

Good morning.
We're roofing our house, ourselves, to save $13,000.
I helped hub and sons putting decking on the roof all day yesterday.
I'm hurt today. LOL And I'm physically fit for a 49 year old woman.
What made us think this was a good idea?
Oh yeah, lumber and metal costs.

I don't have to tell you the plot, just that this movie is the bastard child of The Island of Dr Moreau & The Most Dangerous Game that was raised feral in a holler in eastern Kentucky.
Everyone I loved died, which was honestly just Ken Metcalfe, the antelope man. By far, the best actor of the group who really threw himself into being an antelope man who could carry a gun and shoot like a highly trained sniper. Beware his deadly back kick!

Last night, I suggested to John N that we watch The Twilight People (1972) after seeing it listed on Tubi.
This is my public apology to John N for the absolutely appalling, eye gouging cinematic calamity that I forced him to watch last night.
I really thought this movie had promise because Pam Grier was listed as a member of the cast. I was digging that she loved ripping out the throats of the bad guys, but then she turned on everyone like a freshly mittened tom cat.
