"Sats" isn't a technical term. It's a relatively widely name for smaller dinominations of bitcoin in homage of the creator(s). There are a lot of bitcoiners who have minimal technical skills (myself included) who understand this at face value without more than a glance.

The way I see it, comparing it to regular restaurants isn't quite fair. But compared to other fast food and drive through options, I think the quality is great. Also, since it is a franchise, quality may vary widely from one to the next.
All that said, it was pretty sweet opening up @nprofile…xl8h to pay for a meal with my family.

I have to replace my roof soon. They don't take bitcoin. This is a $25k+ (25,787,818 Sat+) job. Do I:
A. Sell my savings to pay it to satisfy the roofer (15% capital gains)
B. Take a loan (interest, but 0% capital gains)?
C. Take a fiat loan (interest)?
D. Wait until a good roofer takes bitcoin as payment (hopefully my roof doesn't leak and cave in)?

I didn't even look at the S9 power usage before responding. That's also a consideration. At the rate BitAxe is moving, I would not be surprised if you could heat your home with the miners for less than Antminer equipment with a better return within a few years.

Not at all, man. It's a good question. Not centralizing for the network in the short-term. But if only a handful of companies (or fewer) build miners and their software, it creates a weakness. Supporting open source mining helps prevent that. So yes, for your money a used S9 will provide a better short term return. But there may be longer term impacts if everyone goes that way.

I can only speak for myself. I spend a little while saving most. I don't see a reason to make the change. Changes to Bitcoin are supposed to be hard and with solid reasoning. The current controversial change seems needless.

A point of Bitcoin is to get away from *the reliance* on centralized financial institutions. Nobody "lets" anyone do anything. It's permissionless. That's another important point. My ability to buy, save, or spend bitcoin hasn't changed at all.

I honestly think that if the most popular use is "digital gold" in contries with relatively strong currencies (US, Canada, Western Europe, etc.), the rewards will continue to keep miners afloat just based on Fiat price growth.

Playing devil's advocate... Does transacting on lightning really help keep miners sovent, though? I understand opening and closing channels, but in a world where bitcoin is a commonly used currency, custodial lightning wallets will almost certainly be the most commonly used method. Transacting on chain would probably be "reserved" (using the term loosely) for relatively large, important transactions.
Maybe I'm totally off base. I don't know. I use Bitcoin (big and little "B") however suits me best in the moment just like anyone else would. Some earn and spend it, some buy and spend it, others save with it. What they choose is none of my business. That's the beauty.

Not a dumb question! Yes you can, as far as I know. At least on Android devices. I've never used nostr on apple. Amethyst supports it in the app and I believe Orbit solves this for others. Many relays have tor addresses.

I've been playing 7 Days to Die with a buddy of mine for a while. I also enjoy Halo, Diablo (though I've barely had time to scratch the surface), Red Dead, Elder Scrolls, and am willing to give any MMORPG a shot. Just don't have the time for it that I used to.

I agree with @nprofile…ysrt , I use a refurbed ThinkCentre (with two new 16 GB RAM sticks and a new SSD) for @nprofile…cnv5 as my home server separate from @nprofile…fu08 . At some point I will go further to create a RAID system for redundancies and such. I am still pretty new to self-hosting, so as I get more time to research, learn, and experiment, things will get better. For the last year or so, however, this setup as worked great.

How so? I've been a buying advocate for a long time. Reinforced by people getting priced out of their homes due to annual rent increases. Rent pays the owners' costs and (usually) then some. Maybe depends on the country? I know 30 year fixed rate loans aren't the norm everywhere.

Yeah, this is the challenge. When it came to running my Haven relay, I preferred having my own hardware over paying to use someone else's. I don't like using Cloudflare to access it and will stop as soon as I find an alternative solution. But I would rather use it as a step in the process than not do anything and rely on others' relays (some of which very well may be using Cloudflare). If anyone has a solution to get around ISP port restrictions, I am more than open to it.
Alas, like you said, anything I try to do gets way more complicated and takes a lot more time, of which I don't have much to spare lately, than it probably should 😅

There are steps in this tutorial about setting it up. It's the one I used to set up a lightning address via a VPS. It works, but I don't use it because TOR and the reverse proxy slows it down significantly. If you have the time and desire, you can pull out the applicable instructions and ignore the rest.

I am not using a Proxmox server, but a mini PC with the Ubuntu server OS. The only issue I ran into is my ISP port forwarding restrictions not allowing me to incorporate Nginx correctly. But I followed this tutorial, got my Haven relay set up, then connected through Cloudflare (as he does in the video). If I ran on a VPS, I could eliminate the use of Cloudflare. Hope this helps!

So I went through a spree of buying mini PCs a while back. Generally one was an upgrade the the previous for my nodes. Now my node is running @nprofile…d6j2 on acceptable hardware, my ThinkCentre is running @nprofile…q0zz for general home server needs, and I have another running my #Haven relay. Now I am trying to determine the best use for a NUC with a 4 TB SSD. Using it to back everything else up comes to mind and I know I can do this with Start9, but not sure about the others.
So, what would you use it for?

Got this bad boy in the mail yesterday from @nprofile…62jx. I do not regret my purchase. This hash rate (~1.8 TH/s) is at the higher setting and the fans are pretty loud. At the middle setting, "Normal," I get about 1 TH/s and the sound blends with the ambient. Certainly not the best price per hash, but the display info and the support for open source mining make it worth it to me.

As usual, things have been made more complicated than they need to be. Title IX is over 50 years old. The issue of biological males competing in women's sports is much more recent. Whatever has allowed this to take place should be changed. Nothing more, nothing less.

My node running adventures have led me down some really interesting rabbit holes. Interesting for me anyway, since I don't have any computer/programming/linux background at all. I've learned a lot on the journey. Running a Bitaxe (or 3 😆) is fun and supporting open source development while enjoying another hobby is enough incentive for me to justify the expense to myself, lol.
But as @npub1ugn…898l said, setting a node up is super easy now. My DIY Start9 just works without me having to think about it. Not like one I had going on bare metal a few years back that i kept on tinkering with.
