trump isn't an aberation, he isn't "not what america is about"
he's the most american president we've ever had
his stupidity, selfishness, greed, chauvinism, and bigotry are all characteristics that are explicitly encouraged by this country and every president of my lifetime has embodied to varying degrees, just more politely
we're not a good country, we've been a malign influence on the world for pretty much our entire existence (being on the right side in ww2 being one of the only exceptions)
america doesn't need saving, it needs to be destroyed and replaced by something much better

there are downsides to 120V for sure. electric kettles take approximately twice as long here as they do there. and other high power devices like space heaters are less effective
but it's honestly fine for the vast majority of devices, very few need more than the 1500W that US outlets can provide (and there are almost always 240V circuits in US homes used for very large permanently installed devices like electric stoves, central air conditioners, EV chargers, etc)
for electronics it's all the same stuff all over the world for the most part for the past 20+ years. usually just the cord is different and it can operate at both voltages. pretty rare though not unheard of to have electronics that only operate at one voltage

the inertia of 100+ years of legacy electrical installations! really north america is the weird one for using 120V
even though the higher voltage is a bit more dangerous, in european countries they've engineered around this in a lot of ways like how most outlets have shutters on them and insulated sleeves on the live/neutral prongs. both features that US outlets/plugs entirely lack

yeah! US outlets supply half the power or less compared to countries with 240V systems
you can still kill/injure yourself with US outlets but i've been shocked with mains voltage before and it doesn't really hurt
on the flip side you're more likely to be shocked with the US system because our electrical standards are *much* lower than europe (less familiar with other parts of the world)

yeah the btrfs ability to shrink volumes was one of the reasons i originally chose it back then. that is a nice feature as a home user because i'll often have spare drives that are smaller but could be used to replace a failed drive in the array. i did see a hacky way to shrink a zpool but it's trivial on btrfs. and you can also dynamically change the type of data/metadata allocation on btrfs, e.g. going from a single drive to mirrored or almost any other direction

it's super nice having all that stuff available! checksumming was the big pull for me, really helpful for long term file preservation. but i also like the snapshot capability
i'm actually using btrfs now but it has a pretty similar feature set to zfs. and i'd probably choose zfs if i was building a new server (set this one up quite a while ago)
