I am quite atheist myself, but I enjoy seeing local customs and traditions. Also, there were really nice boats being shown (and raced!).

Went to St MacDara's day on Thursday for the first time in ages. It's a local Christian tradition celebrating a saint who lived on a tiny Island 1400 years ago.
Supreme weather, even a bit too sunny for my taste 🌞

The view from Cadillac Mt towards the east, just before sunset. What appears like a mountain in the distance, is actually just the shadow of the mountain I was on top of at the moment!
I really haven't seen this phenomenon so clearly before, and I was happy I snapped this picture in the freezing cold 🥶

I had never been skiing outside the western world, so it was an interesting mix of knowns and unknowns.
I even had cheese fondue lunch at the restaurant on the highest peak of Shiga Kogen skiing resort.
The restaurant was a bit more expensive than the other ones, and there was only one guest beside me. The fondue was pretty good though (not the best, but certainly better than I expected).
Not visible well in the picture, but part of the veggie selection was pickled lotus root! A surprising but welcome local addition.

After the morning hours, the sky cleared up making the conditions absolutely perfect!
The skiing resort was very pretty although the infrastructure was weirdly old. It's something I realised in the area more generally: things look like they were once top-of-the-line, but are slowly falling into disrepair.
Anyway, the lifts were running well, and were less than 10% occupied, so I was able to spend the maximum time boarding and enjoying the time outdoors.

𝗦𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻
Over night, the weather changed completely: temperatures dropped and loads of snow fell in the mountains 🌨️
I got up early, rented equipment and had one of the best snowboarding days in a long time! The finest powder and a skiing resort that was almost empty 🏂

𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹
The weather in Nagano was dreadful, with thick clouds, temperatures well above 0°C and lots of rain.
I took the "Snow Monkey Express" to Yudanaka Onsen, a smaller tourist town a bit higher up.
The hotel I stayed at was run by a Japanese man (and his Chinese wife) who had been a professional ski jumper in Austria when he was younger ⛷️ 🇦🇹
The rooms were Ryokan-style and provided plenty of space, but little heating 🥶
I visited the "(non?)smoking Buddha" and prayed to him so that he may help my friend quit 🤞

I finally sorted through the pictures from my Japan trip, so here I go!
My time after the conference was limited and I wanted some time for Tokyo as well, but not having any nature time was not an option.
So instead of going to Kyoto like everyone else, I decided to take the Shinkansen to Nagano, a city and province to the west of Tokyo on the main island.
Navigating the train station was more tricky than I thought, but I finally found my train and had a very pleasant ride.

I am a bit ashamed to admit, I have never been to Berlin's botanical garden until today! It's quite nice though. Lots of trees and quite areas.
