Macs of that era also have decent audio system. E.g. my Late 2011 MacBook Pro have and optical drive a nice 17" screen, speakers that are pointed upwards and not into the table and even a subwoofer (albeit it's still pretty small of course, being built into the laptop). And other than broadcom wireless adapter that requires a binary driver (there is a truly open one, but it doesn't work too well), it plays nicely with linux.
It has an early quad core i7, 16 gigs of RAM and two internal SATA connectors and sometimes I really want to turn it into a server, but OMG — that display, that audio, when it comes to watching movies in bed it's unrivalled :marseyemojismilemoutheyes:

Facts aren't the only thing that matters if you want someone to change their mind, you have to present these facts so that the other party would be willing to accept them. Sometimes it takes time for them to reassess — you always have to take this into account.
But you aren't willing to invest your time and effort into that, are you? For you it's not about the facts either — indeed, you are presenting facts, but only to win the argument — to dominate.
The other party is unwilling to get invested emotionally into figuring out who would dominate — that is basically what they are telling you with "agreeing to disagree".
You, in turn, are unwilling to accept that and they block you.
Neither party cares about the facts and neither is willing to invest any effort into further interaction, everyone wants something right here and right now — so it's all very straightforward here :marseyshrug:

At least on Fedi we can have long posts and that encourages some discussion, learning new things and in case of conflicts, even a possibility of finding middle ground — maybe not agreeing in the end, but at least not being at each other's throats.
When you open your feed on the likes of Bull Skype or Twatter, you see posts that are products of a ~0.5 seconds of thought — makes me look at at and think: "Why am I even wasting time on this garbage?!"

Even Microsoft seems to have given up on the idea, their latest iteration — ReFS, has none of the ideas planned in WinFS. And now that in Git version control was implemented with approach typical for lower-level filesystem, not database — which would make a lot of sense, no one seems to love databases anymore.

They do, but last I looked there wasn't a lot of them to choose from. And yeah, of course they are for professional use — that's the only use case IMO to justify an external sound card.
I know, it's popular among geeks to use an "external DAC", spend a good amount of money on headphones (still less than you would shell out for a decent set of speakers and amp) and think you're enjoying great audio. But I've never approved of it, using headphones for extensive periods is extremely tiring — I did mixing in headphones and although with breaks, it might have lasted for days, so I know precisely what I'm talking about here.
I'm for extremes here: either you go all the way and spend an even greater amount of money on real amp, speakers and all that — even if it won't be the same level as your $800 headphones, it would still be better; or you don't waste time on that at all, get a pair of low impedance HD515-grade headphones and use them with your integrated card.

Connector doesn't make the difference of course, it's lack of DMA that does — USB devices can't have DMA. Yeah, but you can also use digital output — even soundcards built into motherboards often still have optical outputs, no need for USB. For playback I mean, when you need multiple inputs it's not an option, but neither it is what consumers do.
I know that it's what a lot of people use, but USB is still absolute shit for audio — if one was designing a bus for audio specifically, no one would ever come up with USB. Firewire was great, but even when it was still a thing it was mostly popular among audio and video professionals, only Sony and Apple laptops had a Firewire controller and maybe a few high-end models by HP and Dell too — for mass consumer this was never an option, that's how USB cards came to be.
In side-by-side comparison USB sucks horse's ass: it consumes extra CPU power just for IO, which is bad when you need it for something else like mixing and have a dozen of tracks in that mix — it used to be a really big deal when CPUs didn't have the computing power they have today). Some professional cards even had dual Firewire/USB connectivity, in case you wanted to have decent card, but decided to cheap out on computer — so you would later have an option to rethink, but keep the card.

I do realize though that there is little choice at the moment as Firewire is effectively dead and I don't think I've seen any widely available Thunderbolt offerings, using Thunderbird enclosure with PCI cart is clunky too, but I still don't like the idea of using USB for it :marseysigh:

It, sure, is no top of the line equipment and as I mostly listen to CDs, I barely use built-in sound for anything other than movies — in which case quality isn't the cornerstone, but I can't say that it's noisy in either of my laptops, including very old (ancient? medieval?😅) ThinkPads — of course you have to explicitly mute all the inputs: CD, mic, line in — and at times even more obscure shit that codec might support, but is rarely even wired to anything — this shit is usually what picks up the noise. I dunno, maybe some soundcards' kernel modules dont export these and they aren't available in mixer software, getting rid of noise in this case might indeed be problematic 🤔

Oh, I'm a fan of Eastern European shows, including Polish ones of course. I usually prefer darker stuff though: Wataha, Belfer, Pakt… Wataha is simply amazing — it has so many unusual sides to it, even some mysticism gets thrown in 😅
This reminds me that I have at last found the third season of it, I'll probably rewatch it whole after finishing UV.
Ultraviolet is good! TBH mid first season I wasn't sure if I'm up to the second one, but in the end I got hooked.
There is this site, cinemaz.to, where you can find torrents for European shows and hard to find old movies. I'm not too much into Bittorent, this site is the only reason I have my seedbox running 24/7. UV, Wataha and Pakt are of course big names, produced in cooperation with and for international companies like Netflix and HBO, sometimes by international teams even, but they also have much less know stuff, produced mostly for internal markets — and it's simply amazing, those are done without making it more accessible to foreign viewers in mind, you can often see what people really live like, it's like a window to another world!
Contemporary Polish movies are good too, even less artsy more accessible ones, like Kler, The Hater (don't remember its original name) or Bogowie to name a few. Not sure if they are known outside Poland, but these ones have excellent stories and are also good from, so to say, production value, visual point of view.

I'm watching this Polish TV show, Ultraviolet, which takes place in the city of Lodz. They have a stela with statue of Tadeusz Kosciuszko on top of it and the show often uses it as an intermission between scenes. In one of those there are a unicorn horn and a shiny cape on it.
The tone of the show isn't overly serious so it doesn't stand out much, but I still think that it's very funny :marseyemojismilemoutheyes:

I think C has little to do with it, the biggest problem is that while it's being considered "an open standard" by many, it's not that — there is only one major implementation and it's Google's own implementation, others have little to no interest contributing to it as it will remain Google's implementation in any case.
So having sole implementation that is used, in addition to obviously very popular Chrome itself, it's used by a lot of software. If that software has anything even remotely to do with images — why don't we add WebP support, right? So in addition to all the browsers, this shit is now everywhere.
Why the fuck down ffmpeg in my system depends of libwebp? I don't know. Does anyone of you use WebP for any other purposes except for posting it on the Web? I don't and I doubt that anyone does — it's advantages over existing formats is negligible for personal use, but it still makes sense for Google as they serve petabytes of data and even 10% makes a huge difference.
I might have digressed, but anyway — as it is used in software that is present virtually in every system and in addition to that, it's the same implementation, it makes libwebp a very attractive target for attacks. Monoculture is never good. These sole implementtion is closely studied by those, who intend to exploit it — this is where C factor might come into play.
Another problem is that Google doesn't give a fuck about how and where their library is used. Because they only care about how it's being used in Chrome — Chrome offers some means of isolation, if one tab gets compromised, others are safe. And to me it looks like that is exactly what they think: "Oh, it's not that bad, it's isolated!" And that is true, and same is true for Android. But is it isolated in ImageMagic — no, it's not. And when this vulnerability has hit the news, that is exactly what one person came up with in comments on HackerNews: let's isolate/containerize it for ffmpeg and ImageMagic too. That's insane! Nowadays it's assumed that everything is isolated/containerized — but in reality it's not. And it shouldn't be!

Like yeah, being able to run some things as root without password is nice but there definitely are other meana to achieve that 🤔
