No longer true, I believe. Soundcard today is most often built into mainboard and those are well supported, but not necessarily — even very obscure cards might work. I have booted an Ubuntu Live USB just for fun on my Mac Pro and to my surprise, even my old external Firewire M-Audio card worked fine, all of its eight outputs, I didn't test digital analog and optical outputs and more advanced features, but at least basic I/O works 🤷
