Yesterday I went on a walk. I used an app to identify flowers and took photos. When I came home I made a zine.
It took me *hours* and I enjoyed every minute. I should do this more often again.

One of the first pages I look for when I visit a personal website is "Links". A good links page is like a web directory without being a web directory. It's amazing what you can find there. The web is fucking amazing!

When people write a whole paragraph without punctuation of any kind it is *very* hard to understand the whole thing if you are not fluent (enough) in that language.

I've got a problem. I've recently added the following CSS to my site, which automatically adds an arrow symbol after outgoing links.

- The good thing: It works. Yay.
- The problem: It adds a gap between the line of thext the link is in and the one below. You can see examples on [my links page](https://theresmiling.eu/links).
- The questions: Why? And is there a way to get rid of that gap? It seems to be connected to the arrow symbol itself? Can that be? I don't even know how to look for solutions. Does anyone have a tip on where to look for one?
Edit: Maybe I should add that this is happening in Firefox. It does not happen in Safari on my phone, but there the arrow isn't visible to begin with. Different problem.

I just activated follow requests. Some weird people have tried to follow me recently and I'm done with that.
I'll clean out my follows (both ways) in the coming weeks (or probably months), too. People that never interact (i.e. at least like) with anything I post will be cut off.
Don't worry, you don't have to react to every post I make. But if I have never seen you before, you follow, and then I never see you again, well, you don't have to be in my followers list. I'm not a public figure, nor a public institution. Therefore I have no bad conscious about deleting followers.
I don't always interact with people I follow either. And if they delete my follow that's totally fine. Your profile, your rules. My profile, my rules. That's all.
I need to get order into what I see on here and this is step one in that quest.

I feel less and less enthusiastic about social media.
The fedi is the only social media I use, and it's been a good place for me. For the most part I stay in my small lovely bubble. Because I dread more and more to look elsewhere. People are treated very badly for being themselves and not harming anyone. I hate that. I can't stand it. And while I haven't been a target myself, and while I know that most people are cool, I do recognise how I want to spend less and less time here.
I want to use social media the way *I* want. That seems to be very different from many others. And that's ok! I'm not here to tell anyone how to use social media! But I struggle to make it work for me.
So... I think this is stuff for a blog post.
However, I am not going anywhere for the time being. I do not plan to leave the fedi. I do believe in this place. -- Or the plac*es* that are the fedi. But I need to find a better way to make it a good place for me.

Päckchen wurde in die Filiale gesendet, die gar keine Filiale ist, sondern eine Theke in einem Friseur. Der hat morgen nur bis 13 Uhr auf, ich arbeite bis 12:50 Uhr. Auch am Montag hat er nur bis 13 Uhr auf, ich arbeite bis 15:10 Uhr.
Ja, Samstag hat er auch auf, aber da habe ich keine Lust früh aufzustehen, oder überhaupt das Haus zu verlassen.
Mich nerven auch gar nicht die Öffnungszeiten dieses Friseurs. Mich nervt, dass die Post so operiert wie sie es tut.

Did you pick it yourself? How do number plates work in Australia?
E.g. here in Germany the first letters, at set of either one, two, or three, are determined by the county where your car is registered. The next one or two letters, and the numbers (I think up to four?), can be picked by you - or you just take what's next in line.

Is there a good kind of course/ guide/ how to for learning how to use the terminal (I'm currently running Fedora Linux) *for dummies*. No crypic abbreviations, no "run this string of code" and then no further explanation, no assuming I know anything but how to open the terminal. Something that starts with telling me what everything means that I see even when I first open the terminal. How to do the most basic things, before going into the more interesting things. One stept after the other.
Please tell me there is such a thing? I really want to learn.

This is what happens when you don't listen to the universe: You lose your 30 year old original PopSwatch. 😭😭😭
Here's what's happened:
The original ring, which holds the watch, has been broken for at least 20 years. I always wanted to get a new one, but never did because the original ones are a bit expensive. A few weeks ago I had a thought: why not 3D print a ring?! I thought that maybe there were a file already -- or, even better, maybe someone sells 3D printed rings. And indeed, I found a shop who does! I ordered a ring and it came last week.
When I just wanted to get on my bike this afternoon to get home from work, I saw that the ring was empty and the watch gone.
The signs I ignored:
1. I got sent the wrong size ring before getting the right size.
2. The watch popped out of the ring earlier today. I saw it happening, so I knew it was a bit lose in the ring and could be mindful about it. Except that I immediately forgot all about it.
Two very clear signs - in hindsight. Now the watch is gone. I don't know where exactly I lost it. Could very well have been outside. I walked my path between the buildings back and forth 3 times in the pouring rain and found nothing. I emptied out my backpack and other bags and pouches, it's not there. So I think it's really gone.
There might be one small chance left, because I forgot to look at one spot. But I didn't hear anything fall, so I doubt it's there.
I'm so mad I could cry. Infact, I may have cried a little already.
I meant to write an e-mail to the seller of the ring to let him know it had arrived (after the little hickup of me getting the wrong size first). But of course I hadn't done it yet. Now I feel I should let him know that the watch fell out - not to accuse him of anything - this is all my fault - but so that he might have the chance to check his design and maybe make it a bit tighter. Or something. I don't know. That would be his decision. But I feel I should let him know.
Anyway, if you want to cross your fingers for me, that would be nice. I don't have much hope to find it anymore though. And if it's laying in the soaking grass it'll be dead anyway.
Oh man, that totally fits my life atm. Yay.

I am once again at a point where I‘m half jokingly (or half seriously) thinking about learning how to solder so that I can build my own Tangara. And then I read the respective thread in the Cool Tech Zone forum and I don‘t understand anything and I‘m like, naaah, this is so beyond my brain power.
But is it really?
Sure, you could say: Elena, you‘re an adult, you can do whatever you like. If you want to build your own Tangara, you could sit down and learn everything you need to build one.
And you‘re right, I could. But the thing is, right now I can‘t. There are things that I want out of the way first. And I‘ve been wanting to get them out of the way for a looong time. But for reasons that I don‘t want to go into I haven‘t reached that goal yet. It‘s frustrating as hell. I hate it and I hate that I can‘t get them done.
So the Tangara self build is one more thing I‘m putting back into the shelf of things I‘ll probably never do/ make because of… well, my own stupidity.
But maybe it can be also one of the things that adds a little extra motivation to get my ish worked out at last.
We‘ll see.

This day started off 😒 great:
🌧️ It rained (again, or still), so I couldn‘t wear my nice jacket. Of course it stopped ten minutes into my commute.
🚲 This also means my bike got dirty again. The repairshop it needs to get the brakes repaired has to live with it. (I prefer to bring clean bikes.)
💻 I forgot my work iPad at home (charging) and am using my phone now. It‘s so tiny.
📋 I have a long ass list of things I need to do today, because I need to catch a plane first thing tomorrow morning. Which is basically still in the middle of the night.
At least it looks like the sun might come out today. 🌞

Ok, I have now read some reactions by people here, and I have watched Jessie Gender's [review](https://youtu.be/cinH76yCUi8) of "4 and a half Vulcans". Almost all of the points she talks about are on my list of things I don't like as well, and some others I have missed before. However, when watching the episode I did not understand the depth of those problems.

Why Youtube - or *anyone* really - thinks everyone not in an English speaking country, or with their computer settings set to not English or whatever, might prefer an awful automated horribly sounding "dub" that is not English is fucking beyond me. There are people whose native language is not English, but **they can still speak and understand it anyway!** It's fucking insulting.
I can switch off autoplay with one click, but for this stupid autodubbing I have to do at least 3 clicks. WTF!?
(Watching something on Youtube because Freetube is not working for me atm. So no need to tell be about alternatives, I know them already.)
Edit: That goes in all directions. Set your system to English and you get non-English videos dubbed in English.

About my hurting lower back. Recap: A short sharp pain shot into my lower back on Monday morning. It‘s still not gone away. Some days it‘s really quite better, some days it‘s hurting like hell. Today is one of those. I can lie on my belly, or stand and walk. Sitting is impossible and makes everything worse.
I‘ve been wanting to reply to some messages since yesterday, but on my laptop. While lying on my belly this is pretty much impossible. And I can‘t come up with a good solution for a make shift stand up desk kinda thing.

What a fucking week:
Monday
- a pain shot into my lower back while doing a tiny move forward
- painkillers didn't work
- I made a big ass batch of potato salad for Tuesday's last conference with buffet
Tuesday
- hot water bottle over night didn't work for my back
- it even got worse over night
- I did not go to the conference and now had this big ass batch of potato salad
- which I had to give at least half of it away because
- I can't eat and drink a whole lot of stuff for the next two days because I've got tests for lactose and fructose intolerance tomorrow and Friday
Today
- back still hurts like hell
- trying red tiger balm now
- because moving hurts I tried to pick up my e-bike battery by pulling it up from the floor by the charging cable - which I pulled out of course and the battery fell edge first on my foot.
- PAIN!
- my bike brakes are wrongly adjusted, which results in grinding noises and squeeking
- but my back hurts a lot, so cleaning my bike and adjusting the breaks sounds like nothing I want to do right now
- because of my force diet I can't have any sparkling wine or cake for my co-workers' after school birthday get-together today
- oh yes, and it's the last day of school today. 🥳
- i am SO READY for that!
