Since kids prefer laptops, perhaps parents could get an old 40+ inch 1080p TV, along with a mouse and keyboard, and plug those into the laptop while the kid is at home? 🤔
That's four cables to plug in, though. Kind of annoying. Just one if you have a dock, but those cost extra, and most parents aren't rich…

This would seem to suggest that parents could mitigate this problem by getting their kids a PC with a large desktop screen. Mine, for example, is 60cm from my face and is on an arm that can extend up to 80cm away.
Most kids aren't fond of big honking desktops, though. The biggest screen they usually use is a small laptop. Even the 15-inch CRT I had as a kid is big compared to that.
I'll tell you one thing, though. Kid me would have been SO JEALOUS of adult me's big 4K screen. 😜

It's not inefficient as such, but it does adapt rather badly to the modern eyeball use-case of reading books and screens. The muscle doesn't cost much energy, but it does get tired.
If you do stare at a book or screen throughout your childhood, your eyeballs may try to adapt by growing axially elongated, but that makes you nearsighted. That's why highly educated people are more likely to be nearsighted: loads and loads of reading!

Not in an artificial camera, no. The lenses stay where they are unless moved (by either your hand or the auto-focus motor). As long as no such force is applied to them, friction holds them in place.
Which might be a problem in biology, now that I think about it. Biological systems tend to be rather wet inside. Not much friction available. And if the focus mechanism was dry and held in place by friction, it would probably wear out and fail rather quickly.

Man-made cameras have just such a focus mechanism. The shape of the lenses is fixed; they're pieces of a solid, rigid material like glass.
Instead, they have *multiple* lenses, and move the lenses closer or farther apart to change focal length.
This nicely avoids the exertion problem, but this mechanism is a great deal more fragile and mechanically complicated than biological eyes. You'd probably go blind just by getting punched in the face once.

Well, the way focus works in a biological eye is that a muscle pulls on the lens to deform it into the correct shape. To hold it in that shape, the muscle must exert continuously. Do this long enough, and you get eye strain, because that muscle gets tired just like any other muscle.
To avoid this problem, you'd need either a muscle that can somehow maintain its pressure without exertion, or a completely different focus mechanism that doesn't rely on deforming the lens.

At first glance, the fact that the human #eye muscles must continuously exert to remain focused on a given distance seems like a pretty serious flaw.
In your typical man-made #optical system like a camera, mechanical force is needed to *change* focal length, but if no force is applied then it stays at whatever focal length it was previously at.
But this mechanism is slower and has more moving parts than the human eye, so perhaps that's why?

Netscape isn't a common gigantic user agent, though. Hasn't been in decades.
And let's be honest. If one day the major browser vendors got together and decided to stop this nonsense, they could. Sites would be forced to play along, because otherwise they'd be broken in every browser at once.
Also, who the hell thinks banning unknown user-agent strings is going to stop bots? The only bots that'll stop is the honest ones, and those aren't the ones overloading everybody's servers.

Personally, my primary concern is that my collection of #WebP images will suddenly become inaccessible because all the image viewing/conversion/editing tools suddenly lose support for it.
I guess it's not the end of the world if that happens, but it's pretty scary to think that the data in my possession might suddenly be yanked away like that.

Now that #Dolby has launched a #patent lawsuit over #AV1, unless I'm mistaken we're about to have a repeat of the #Unisys #GIF patent situation where all #browser⁠s must remove support for widely-used image and video formats, namely AV1, #AVIF, #WebP, #WebM, #VP8, and #VP9.
This is really bad. The only other widely supported video codec is #MPEG-4 (which is also patented) and the only other widely supported lossy image format is #JPEG (which is rather inefficient).
What do we do?

Of note is that queen #3 was convinced of such by Jurati *after* having assimilated Jurati.
This turned Jurati into a nagging voice in the queen's head, apparently with access to the queen's enormous mental faculties, whereupon Jurati calculated that the Borg *always lose* in *every single timeline*.

Anyway, I know of at least three different Borg queens:
1. First Contact queen. Died, but the Collective remained otherwise unscathed and made a new one.
2. Voyager queen. Horribly crippled by Janeway in the Voyager ending. Came back in Picard with what littie is left of the Collective. Exploded along with her ship.
3. Picard season 2 queen. Last Borg survivor in an alternate timeline. Convinced by Jurati that she's doomed if she doesn't change her ways. Joins the Federation.

Oh, and the one time some humans decided to violate the treaty and make a cloak anyway, they made the phasing cloak, which makes a ship not merely invisible but able to *hide inside planets*.

Bear in mind, by the way, that Starfleet has at least one weapon that destroys planets in one shot: the Genesis device.
The Federation treaty that prohibits it from developing cloaking devices exists for a reason: a ship with a Genesis torpedo and a cloak could destroy any other power's homeworld at will with no warning.
That is terrifying.
If not for the treaty, every power in the galaxy would start a desperate all-out war against the Federation to stop it from doing that.

On Voyager and Deep Space Nine, we fairly often see characters place used items (like empty cups) back on the replicator, which then disappear.
Characters refer to this process as “recycling”, which implies that the replicator can not only make objects but also reclaim energy and materials from unwanted objects.
For example, in VOY: “Year of Hell”, Janeway orders Chakotay to recycle a sentimental item to help replenish the ship's badly drained energy supply.

I once ran Debian on an iBook G3. Debian dropped official support for these machines a while back, though, and there aren't even unofficial CD images of it for the current Debian version, so you'll need another distro.
Fun related fact: the Linux kernel also still runs on many 680x0-based Macs, namely those with a 68020 or newer.

You can also leave them in sleep mode instead of powered off, in which case they'll be ready almost instantly.

My #headphones broke today. A piece of plastic snapped. Without it in place, the part that goes on top of the wearer's head came apart.
That part has to bend to accommodate the wearer's head shape, yet still hold together tightly so it doesn't come apart.
I thought there was no way #ductTape could hold it together. I thought there was no way duct tape would be tight enough. Surely the bending force would simply push the tape aside.
I WAS WRONG.

Are there any other #logging systems for #Linux that can answer queries like “show me all log entries of level warning or higher that were emitted by service xyz since the last reboot”?
#Systemd journalctl can do this, but is that the only one?
Note: I need to be able to select log entries by service name, not the self-reported program name in syslog, because some programs (such as cron) don't report their name correctly.

The wp_usermeta table is a good example of how not to use a tabular #database like #MySQL. Please do not design your #databases this way.
If you or an add-on to your software needs to add more data fields, the correct way to do so is to either ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN or (for add-ons that don't wish to disturb the core application's tables) to CREATE a related TABLE (perhaps in a separate schema, if using a database like #PostgreSQL that supports such a notion).

I've used four languages with futures/promises so far, and of those only JavaScript automatically flattens them like that.
The other three have static type systems, though, which as the article says are not particularly amenable to this sort of dynamic-type-dependent transformation.
I guess you could do it in a language that has overloads and whose promises don't have any supertype whatsoever, but that's it.

#RolePlayingGame mechanic idea:
Characters' base MP is rather low, but certain items (call them “energy crystals” or whatever) increase max MP (and maybe change spell behavior) while in the character's inventory.
One can get quite powerful by carrying a lot of them, but that leaves no room for loot.
Characters with especially low MP (warriors and whatnot) can also carry a few of these to cast the occasional utility spell despite their lack of skill.
Sound like fun?

In The #ElderScrolls Oblivion, all characters, regardless of profession, start with a basic healing spell and enough Magicka to cast it a few times.
Also, potions are rather expensive and health doesn't regenerate.
This has the amusing result that even burly warriors and sneaky assassins tend to end up also being respectably skilled Restoration mages, purely as a side effect of their efforts to keep themselves alive (and financially solvent—potions are expensive).

It strikes me that, when a #Linux process attempts to mount a file system and it fails, the #kernel reports the problem by printk…which is sent to the system log, not the process that made the attempt.
Perhaps the introduction of a new “give me more details on what just happened” system call is in order.
