I save for the future in Bitcoin. When I spend it now I spend KYC from a small exchange balance.
My idea is to stack UTXOs of varying sizes (500k - 5 million sats) in cold storage to spend later. So I have UTXOs of varying purchasing power depending on what I want to buy. So I don’t have to dox a few substantially larger UTXOs on spends.
But idk if 500,000-1,000,000 sats is too small a UTXO. Sometimes I want to consolidate them. But also feel like they could be useful.

New Guinea has the largest rainforest of any island on earth and the third largest in the world.
This island also has a mountain range near the size of the Rockies and a > 16k foot peak, glaciers and regular snow.
This is all in the middle of the world’s third largest rain forest. It is so inhospitable that there are massive tracts of unexplored land there. There are also at least 10 un-contacted there.

One of the issues with my dad is he has never been great at living within his means. The guy loves to buy stuff and has never been a saver. He is realizing more now that he has to live within his means but if there is a major debasement event, if his house needs major work (it might), if the stock market underperforms or if he has medical issues (he might) he could end up in a financial bind. If 3 or 4 of those things happen in the next decade he may be insolvent pretty quick.
Fully agree with your first sentence. Just trying to find something lower risk that he can understand for him to slowly diversify into. Gold (despite its shortcomings) feels like it’s a fairly low risk winner vs fiat and broadly equities over the next decade.
I’ve suggesting he DCA into gold the past 5 years and I really wish he would’ve listened then. He is more receptive now but at least some of the upside in that trade is gone now.

My dad retires next week at age 66.
He’s going from making 10k a month to a little less than 5k.
He has 275k in a low vol stonk index (he has no idea what’s in the index) and owns his house, but that’s it.
I’m worried about him. One more big print and that 5k monthly is going to be minimal.
He won’t go for bitcoin but I’m trying to get him set up better than 100% stocks. I think I could get him to start DCAing into physical gold (boomers love gold) but outside of that there isn’t much I feel okay with. Any suggestions?

There are some exceptions I concede that. NYC and Chicago as you mentioned, Boston and SF too. But for the majority of America I believe my characterization holds mostly true. It will be interesting to see how badly white collar work is disrupted in the next 10 years. Trades aren’t going away and the pay has gone vertical recently especially in HCOL areas. Specifically because as you noted there just are not a lot of capable young people going into them, so pay has to go up to attract more bodies. I would expect trade incomes to trend significantly higher in the coming years.
I think what a lot of people don’t realize when they’re younger is there is a certain level of pride inbuilt when successfully working with your hands that isn’t captured in salary statistics or perceived status. I chase the high that goes with a successful build and that blue collar pride as much as the money.

That’s crazy to me because I grew up doing all the cash side jobs I could get. No taxes and it was freedom because I didn’t have to be a slave to a schedule. I hustled side jobs for years in college and didn’t have to have a shitty retail job.
But I did grow up doing a lot of manual labor for my parents for free. So I was used to it and being paid for stuff I used to do for free was amazing (to me).
Maybe these kids now just have zero tolerance or experience with manual labor? If you’re on TikTok all day and eat at cold stone and Panda Express everyday then looking down the barrel of 8 hours mixing concrete is just too much for their frail psyche.
I’ve known some really badass hardworking dudes from LATAM and they send that money home where it usually has >2x greater purchasing power. So ostensibly they’re making 2x what they’re being paid. A lot of them would send everything home they could and in 10 years have a property and home paid off in their home country and would go live an easy life; a hard now, easy later situation.

It’s crazy. Growing up as an OG millennial everyone harped on me to go to college to get a good job and nobody talked about trades as a viable alternative. Trying to get the message out there now that I’ve seen the light myself.
I see young able-bodied men working at target or the grocery store now and I can see the lack of fulfillment in their eyes and body language.
There is a path to manhood but it’s not being cooped up in Target all day as unskilled labor being paid $15/hr with no prospects for the future.

So many people complain they can’t make it financially but they really just don’t want to work hard.
Nobody is going to make it working a wage job in retail - low pay because it’s easy work.
But almost anybody can get a union apprenticeship with no experience. Show up for 3-5 years and they’ll be making 6 figures, have a transferable skill, industry contacts and easily be able to start their own business in a trade billing $150-250 dollars an hour.
There is ample opportunity for people who want to work hard. But people want easy and they feel comfortable as victims.

Sure, with any generalization across large numbers there are always many exceptions.
Personally I have known many attractive younger women who have worked in tech or corporate in non-technical roles that were not real jobs at all. HR, marketing, sales. These companies always make up a stupid professional sounding titles to mask the fake jobs.
All of them basically fielded emails and did meetings as the core of their “work load” and literally accomplished nothing all day. It’s absolutely wild they get paid 6 figures. Nature needs to heal.

Thank you sir. Original builder used no exterior flashings by on the window trim and no adhesive flashing on the interior window install. Homeowner never had the domicile painted (27 years).
There was a bunch of water intrusions from caulk and paint failure and improper building. Sheathing was rotten and mold in interior walls. Was a big undertaking but got er dialed in.

House wrap in general is a very shitty engineering solution.
House wrap is not breathable so the temperature difference between conditioned spaces and the outside conditions creates condensation behind the air bubbles in the wrap (thousands on every wrap job). That condensation gets trapped under the house wrap since it’s not breathable. Over time this creates mold and rot in your interior walls even with no water intrusion.
House wrap is also stapled on so any actual water intrusions get behind the wrap and since it’s not breathable that water just sits in your interior walls, molding and rotting anything it touches.
House wrap also has many openings at the bottom and top where bugs can easily crawl through. It’s just a shitty cheap product. I’ve seen it be a complete failure over and over.
ZIP is more expensive and takes longer to install but the goal isn’t extreme speed or the absolute lowest cost is it?
ZIP will create a much more durable, sealed and efficient structure. It’s well worth the extra cost and install time - and on a structure that small it’s going to be very negligible.

The difference is capitalism is an emergent economic reality that occurs organically. Yes, it gets co-opted and handicapped by grifters and warlords every time, but it’s real. It has objective properties and leads to demonstrably better outcomes for its participants despite being parasitized to varying levels where it happens.
“Communism” as Marx wrote about it was purely philosophical theory that has no basis in reality. It’s a total fiction, has never arisen organically, and cannot be created in the thresher of reality. No matter how hard any group tries, it’s never going to exist.
So pointing to something that is real and tangible and saying it could be better if it wasn’t so parasitized (demonstrable) is not even close to a leftist saying something totally made up never happened.
