@nprofile…khrh if you don’t have tattoos, I highly recommend a visit to an onsen or sento if you haven’t done that yet. Some of my favorites in the tokyo area are maenohara onsen saya no yudokoro and jomon natural onsen shiraku no yu. If you have tattoos, azabu kokubisui onsen takenoyu allows tattoed guests and is also a pretty unique experience. For these, bring your own small towels and soap.

I’m really not a fan of linters, and espec of code auto formatters. In a time when AI usage already homogenizes most types of online communication, I really don’t see the value in removing the tiny specks of personal style I express in the way I align arguments across code lines, or in my positioning of comments.

the symbol’s outline is wayyy too thick, the VCC and GND pins are in the wrong places, the pins are grouped wrong, and the gate I/Os aren’t aligned properly. I can’t imagine how they came up with this.

I just tried out SnapEDA’s new AI thing and it’s such a mess lol. Asked to import a symbol for a 74 series quad XOR gate into the active design, it locked up my computer for about a minute before producing the absolute dogshit in the attached picture. I kind of want them to succeed, but this isn’t even close lol 🤪

I was so confused why a u-blox GPS receiver module needed a Display Data Channel (DDC) controller, since it very much does not have any display outputs and DDC is what HDMI, DisplayPort etc. use to determine screen resolution. In the end I figured out that their engineers were just Determined not to pay any licensing fees for the I2C trademark.

@nprofile…4qfj ich würde allein um verwechselungen zu vermeiden alles auf upc lassen und apc dann per adapter-patchkabel (upc-apc) machen. apc in upc stecken kann mit etwas pech beide faserenden kaputt machen, sollte deshalb eindeutig getrennt sein. und wenns irgendwann wirklich sein muss, ist es mit nem spleißgerät auch nicht schwer, ein upc-ende durch ein apc-pigtail zu ersetzen.

my phone got annoying and pushed me to update to iOS 26. I’ve been using it for about an hour so far, and it’s so bad. It’s ugly, distracting and clunky. I think when your software makes your users turn off several engineer-years worth of features in your accessibility settings within an hour of using it, you messed up.

Part of why this feels so wrong to me is that in Germany, there is a stark age gap in English language skill, with older people generally being a lot worse, which gives this argument some ageist energy. Even uglier, in today's less affluent former GDR states, English was a less common subject at school, meaning older people from that area even more likely have poor English skill.

* On plugging in monitor, gnome thinks it's connected, the monitor doesn't agree and displays black
* OS and settings window disagree on multi-monitor layout, meaning the mouse cursor doesn't move to the next monitor where it should
* OS monitor layout has huge gaps between monitors in virtual pixel space, meaning you have to move the mouse for like 1 m to get out of one monitor and into the next

Bugs I observed in just the last five minutes:
* Monitor layout state desyncs between OS and applications, leading to windows to still display but become non-interactable
* Settings window is on different monitor, but the monitor isn't receiving signal, so you can't access the settings window to unfuck things
* Display settings confirm/keep settings dialog displays in the corner between three monitors, making most of it invisible outside the three monitor's bounds

@nprofile…ftwc @nprofile…aax0 I think the main limitation using these for something like an SMPS would be that they are coreless and large, and as such they would be a total EMI nightmare if you fed them straight from a FET switching with nice, crisp edges. You could maybe mitigate that and increase inductance with one fo these ferrite shielding sheets you can get for cheap for wireless charger coils.
Besides that, when pushing power, in PCB planar inductors the DC resistance quickly gets annoying.

I think this one is similar to the theft prevention things you see in stores. I think this is conceptually more similar to what I've seen referred to as "flux-neutral" coils, where you have an arrangement of multiple side-by-side coils of opposing polarity to either suppress or enhance far-field sensitivity.

@nprofile…aax0 Depends on board area, I'd say about 50 µH in 25 mm diameter and maybe 400 µH in 50 mm diameter. The main limiting factor for large inductances is DC resistance due to the narrow trace width you need to stack many windings.

@nprofile…8x50 Tbh, I have never seen anything quite like these used in the wild. There are some high-performance planar RF inductors that apply concepts similar to this or that are special cases of this, but AFAIK this is the first generalized implementation of the concept. I did some literature research back into the 1800s, and I didn't find any other explicit formulation of the general "any combination of co-prime turn count and 'twist' count" inductor idea.

I've got a new #KiCad plugin out in the KiCad plugin manager:
KiCoil generates "twisted" planar inductors. You can make it do one- or two-layer spiral inductors, toroid inductors, and many intermediate, hybrid variants in between spiral and toroid inductors.
These hybrid types have wider traces than a single-layer spiral, but have better high-frequency behavior (parasitic capacitance and self-resonant frequency) compared to two-layer spiral inductors. And they look really pretty!

This must be one of the the most unhinged workplaces in science, ever. In 1966, Fowler asked how air moves through a centrifugal compressor. To answer this question, he put a guy holding a camera on a spinning chair in the middle of a huge turbine wheel spinning at 70 rpm. Below is the original diagram of the "rig" from their paper. I found this absolute gem of a paper after seeing it described as a "heroic effort" in another, much later book on the subject.

I made myself a very simple rope bag for #climbing
I kind of yolo’ed the design using scraps and leftovers. It’s made from only two, rectangular pieces of fabric. A lightweight ripstop nylon makes an inner bag, and a heavy backpack fabric wraps around to protect the lightweight inner bag during transport. The white belts are sewn as webbing so it can be attached to other bags for carrying, though right now I just put a piece of ribbon on as a handle.

Huh, I just found out that Gowin now has a series of FPGAs that claim 2 Gbps LVDS I/O and 12.5 Gbps transceivers. Doesn't seem like anyone stocks their devboards yet though, and their pricing on mouser looks not too dissimilar from xilinx. I wonder if they still support these parts with their own toolchain.

@nprofile…0kd5 if your target security profile is metadata resistance, you have to do so much more than choose a different cloud provider. Decentralization makes that problem worse, not easier. And funnily enough, once you switch to a metadata resistant protocol, the choice of cloud provider doesn’t matter anymore.
Signal is not locked to any particular provider, and no doubt they’ll be able to switch providers when necessary. It’s just not necessary at this time.

The latter is the interesting bit, since they structured their protocol considering the cloud provider untrusted. This means the provider learns very little about their users, and their main role is providing uptime.

The issue seems to be that these crawlers really are not very smart, and will just exhaustively follow every link on my poor cgit instance. A bunch of these links lead to large files, which then chokes up the server if a dozen bots try it at the same time.

Oh my. Just came back from a holiday to find my personal site at https://jaseg.de offline from nginx getting OOM killed. Turns out when it went down, it reveived almost 600 requests a minute, almost all from AI crawlers. The most prominent crawler was facebook's at ~60% of all requests, followed by claude at ~25%.
I'm going to give it one shot blocking the worst offenders using some nginx config, but if this keeps up I'll just have to put at least my git repos behind cloudflare.

So I bought some Anker/Soundcore headphones while on holiday. It turns out they had a defect from the factory, one of the ANC presence sensors doesn't work right.
Sadly, as it turns out Anker is a shit company that doesn't honor their warranties. They're happy to sell you products anywhere in the world, but their support says they only process warranty claims where you bought the product.
Kind of ass backwards if you ask me, and I'll personally never buy an Anker/Soundcore/Eufy product again.

FreeCAD and LibreOffice Impress are currentl the two programs I use that most frequently crash or bug out.
FreeCAD crashes at least several times an hour even without me doing anyth crazy. Impress has outline mode, which is haunted.

I finally came around to writing up the details behind the CSS-only code listings I use on my blog. These listings wrap on page resize with line continuation markers, show scrollbars past a configurable minimum width, support native text selection without the line numbers being copied, and number lines in plain CSS without any JS involved. The new modal dialogs in GTK/gnome that are nailed to the parent window's center and can't be used are such unintelligent design. Libreoffice now uses these for the paragraph style editing dialog so now you can't move the dialog anymore to look at the effect of your settings on the actual document. A similar issue happens with the "save as" dialog in many GTK applications. Often you'd want to look at the content of the document to decide on a file name.

The most basic issue all other attempts at secure messaging have is that they are not in widespread use, unlike signal. Y'all, would anyone with a crypto/distributed systems background like to join me in a brief security/privacy analysis of this thing in a week or two? From a cursory glance it looks a bit like a vibe-coded security disaster. Like, signature verification is optional and seems to fail silently, peer identities aren't actually verified before accepting keys, it's not actually anonymous since it has public, long-term identity keys etc.

@nprofile…h3l7 I agree. Using the superset would quickly lead to large numbers of people seeing a toot that the OT didn’t intend. It’s just weird in that replying to someone else’s post, I have absolutely no idea who or even how many of my followers also follow them. It’s essentially like posting to an IRC or discord channel with a random membership list that you can’t see.

TIL that when you reply to a followers-only post on mastodon, the reply will only be visible to the intersection of the original tooter’s followers and the replying tooter’s followers, and to any mentioned tooters. This means the circle of people who can see such a reply is rather small and totally non-obvious to anyone in the thread. IMHO weird UX, though I don’t really have a better idea either.

I always thought that "audio on linux" thing was just a meme until my archlinux decided to break its audio output with an update. I managed to fix it by fucking around a bit and manually installing the "pipewire-pulse" package.

@nprofile…8x2j In cost-sensitive applicatoins, in aluminium, fins are easier to make since you can extrude them. Pins require either casting, or milling.

@nprofile…8x2j I think another point for fins is that they have more thermally conductive material overall. I think that when you have air flowing across a pin heatsink, the volume in the "shade" of these pins contributes little, and might as well be filled with thermally conductive material to transport heat to the top.
Another consideration is mechanical stability. Pins have to be pretty chonky to not bend, and to be machineable or moldable, whereas you can make fins much thinner.

@nprofile…dpy5 I’ve recently seen HDMI connectors used to interface a device with a remote I/O panel. Mini HDMI would also make for a decent debug connector since it’s cheap, small, well-shielded, can be mounted SMD, and has a load of pins for fun stuff like tracing or breaking out signals for use with a logic analyzer or scope.

Holy shit, the PCB design of this new sensor board, called Ophanim, of CERN’s Aegis experiment just fucking slaps. Right now, there don’t seem to be many images of it on the web, but I hope to see more in the future.

@nprofile…km86 I got something similar to that too, but a retractable variant that works similar to a retractable ballpoint pen because I’m clumsy and I’m scared of these things 😅
This one is made by Transptype/Holtz, but build quality is not that amazing.

#electronics tool rec of the day: The last time I visited Berlin, I went to modulor and I impulse bought a new cutter knife for my micro soldering work. The knife is made by OLFA, and it’s actually great. The blade is held firmly by the metal shroud, the retraction action is really smooth, and it’s thinner than any other knife I have making it easier to handle under the microscope. @nprofile…h33s I know that at least for kimchi, you’re supposed to use pure, iodine-free salt because the iodine messes with the fermentation bacteria. But there’s only one way to find out for sure!
