I just tried out SnapEDA’s new AI thing and it’s such a mess lol. Asked to import a symbol for a 74 series quad XOR gate into the active design, it locked up my computer for about a minute before producing the absolute dogshit in the attached picture. I kind of want them to succeed, but this isn’t even close lol 🤪

my phone got annoying and pushed me to update to iOS 26. I’ve been using it for about an hour so far, and it’s so bad. It’s ugly, distracting and clunky. I think when your software makes your users turn off several engineer-years worth of features in your accessibility settings within an hour of using it, you messed up.

Part of why this feels so wrong to me is that in Germany, there is a stark age gap in English language skill, with older people generally being a lot worse, which gives this argument some ageist energy. Even uglier, in today's less affluent former GDR states, English was a less common subject at school, meaning older people from that area even more likely have poor English skill.

@nprofile…ftwc @nprofile…aax0 I think the main limitation using these for something like an SMPS would be that they are coreless and large, and as such they would be a total EMI nightmare if you fed them straight from a FET switching with nice, crisp edges. You could maybe mitigate that and increase inductance with one fo these ferrite shielding sheets you can get for cheap for wireless charger coils.
Besides that, when pushing power, in PCB planar inductors the DC resistance quickly gets annoying.

@nprofile…aax0 Depends on board area, I'd say about 50 µH in 25 mm diameter and maybe 400 µH in 50 mm diameter. The main limiting factor for large inductances is DC resistance due to the narrow trace width you need to stack many windings.

I've got a new #KiCad plugin out in the KiCad plugin manager:
KiCoil generates "twisted" planar inductors. You can make it do one- or two-layer spiral inductors, toroid inductors, and many intermediate, hybrid variants in between spiral and toroid inductors.
These hybrid types have wider traces than a single-layer spiral, but have better high-frequency behavior (parasitic capacitance and self-resonant frequency) compared to two-layer spiral inductors. And they look really pretty!

This must be one of the the most unhinged workplaces in science, ever. In 1966, Fowler asked how air moves through a centrifugal compressor. To answer this question, he put a guy holding a camera on a spinning chair in the middle of a huge turbine wheel spinning at 70 rpm. Below is the original diagram of the "rig" from their paper. I found this absolute gem of a paper after seeing it described as a "heroic effort" in another, much later book on the subject.

I made myself a very simple rope bag for #climbing
I kind of yolo’ed the design using scraps and leftovers. It’s made from only two, rectangular pieces of fabric. A lightweight ripstop nylon makes an inner bag, and a heavy backpack fabric wraps around to protect the lightweight inner bag during transport. The white belts are sewn as webbing so it can be attached to other bags for carrying, though right now I just put a piece of ribbon on as a handle.

Huh, I just found out that Gowin now has a series of FPGAs that claim 2 Gbps LVDS I/O and 12.5 Gbps transceivers. Doesn't seem like anyone stocks their devboards yet though, and their pricing on mouser looks not too dissimilar from xilinx. I wonder if they still support these parts with their own toolchain.

@nprofile…0kd5 if your target security profile is metadata resistance, you have to do so much more than choose a different cloud provider. Decentralization makes that problem worse, not easier. And funnily enough, once you switch to a metadata resistant protocol, the choice of cloud provider doesn’t matter anymore.
Signal is not locked to any particular provider, and no doubt they’ll be able to switch providers when necessary. It’s just not necessary at this time.

The latter is the interesting bit, since they structured their protocol considering the cloud provider untrusted. This means the provider learns very little about their users, and their main role is providing uptime.

The issue seems to be that these crawlers really are not very smart, and will just exhaustively follow every link on my poor cgit instance. A bunch of these links lead to large files, which then chokes up the server if a dozen bots try it at the same time.

So I bought some Anker/Soundcore headphones while on holiday. It turns out they had a defect from the factory, one of the ANC presence sensors doesn't work right.
Sadly, as it turns out Anker is a shit company that doesn't honor their warranties. They're happy to sell you products anywhere in the world, but their support says they only process warranty claims where you bought the product.
Kind of ass backwards if you ask me, and I'll personally never buy an Anker/Soundcore/Eufy product again.

FreeCAD and LibreOffice Impress are currentl the two programs I use that most frequently crash or bug out.
FreeCAD crashes at least several times an hour even without me doing anyth crazy. Impress has outline mode, which is haunted.

The new modal dialogs in GTK/gnome that are nailed to the parent window's center and can't be used are such unintelligent design. Libreoffice now uses these for the paragraph style editing dialog so now you can't move the dialog anymore to look at the effect of your settings on the actual document. A similar issue happens with the "save as" dialog in many GTK applications. Often you'd want to look at the content of the document to decide on a file name.

The most basic issue all other attempts at secure messaging have is that they are not in widespread use, unlike signal. Just having something like briar or matrix on your phone is already a strong piece of information in and of itself, especially in police states where the rule of law is only followed when it’s convenient.

#electronics tool rec of the day: The last time I visited Berlin, I went to modulor and I impulse bought a new cutter knife for my micro soldering work. The knife is made by OLFA, and it’s actually great. The blade is held firmly by the metal shroud, the retraction action is really smooth, and it’s thinner than any other knife I have making it easier to handle under the microscope. I can imagine a single large, but noisy PV or wind setup might be enough to inject measurable artifacts into the local grid, and might be a good proxy for the overall grid’s current renewable energy share given the small geographic scale of the UK and the resulting correlation of renewable sources.

So my #arch #linux just catastrophically self-destructed. I was using arch with the yubikey full-disk encryption package, when the machine hung and crashed during a system update. The machine crashed exactly after the old initramfs files were cleaned up, and before the new ones were written to disk. Since the yubkikey fde thing stores the seed ("challenge") for the luks key in the initramfs, all copies of the seed are gone now, and the data on that disk is unrecoverable.

Die gibt es ab knapp über 20€, die nehmen einfach DC irgendwas um 20-24V, und sind extrem reparierbar, wenn mal was kaputt geht. @npub1sls…s86u I think the cleanest way to do this would be on the SWD/JTAG interface itself. All you'd need would be a couple of ADUM1200 or similar (capacitive digital isolators, fully integrated and much faster than normal optoisolators), and either some logic and a tri-state gate to track SWD packets, or just an extra IO line from the microcontroller if you integrate the isolator into the blackmagic probe. BOM cost should ve around 10€, with the most expensive part being an isolated DC/DC module.

The people from these stores know precisely which display goes into which laptop, so its easiest to just message them the laptop's model number and have them figure out the right panel.

@npub10yg…88xu I guess the core of the problem must be that a microwave puts out like 1 kW of RF power, and a wifi signal is limited to 100 mW EIRP at the transmitter, so even if the microwave's enclosure provides 40 dB of shielding, that's still 100 mW of leakage. If that leakage happens to come out non-isotropic, like concentrated in some number of complex beams, such a beam can easily flood out anything in that direction with an EIRP much larger than 100 mW.

This is really cool: About ten years ago, a few friends and I built the first #Matelight, a very large display made from crates of glass bottles stacked up sideways, with adressable LEDs stuck into the bottles from the back. Now Hito Steyerl, a renowned artist, used a Matelight inspired by the actual one we hacked together back then at c-base as a part of one of her installations, called "Green Screen". My power electronics experiment has claimed its first victim - here's one very dead STM32G070 MCU (~1Ω short from VDD to GND). The chip isn't much of a loss at only about 1€ each, but replacing it in its TQFP-64 package is going to be a bit of a pain, and the replacement part is going to take a week or two to arrive. Oh well. #electronics #fail

@npub1alv…r0dl @npub1khx…geyg The issue with that is that it only works in a fraction of cases. First, you can't heat buildings with waste heat from moving vehicles. Second, large electrical power plants that produce lots of waste heat are large, ugly and produce lots of pollution, so people don't want to live close to them, and you'll have to transport that heat through long insulated pipes, which is expensive, ugly and decreases efficiency.

@npub1alv…r0dl @npub1khx…geyg Wikipedia's article on heat engines has a decent section on efficiency limits, you can probably find more search terms in there.
You can't convert that waste heat to more mechanical energy (that would violate those thermodynamic laws). The problem is that the temperature is already too low. Pretty much the only use for it is heating buildings. For instance, some district heating systems use waste heat from (electrical) power plants.

@npub1alv…r0dl @npub1khx…geyg Most of this energy loss is because of some fundamental laws of thermodynamics. When you use fossil fuels in transportation or power generation, you burn them in an engine or turbine to convert their chemical energy to mechanical energy. From thermodynamics, we can calculate a maximum to how efficiently you can do that, and sadly even in a perfect world, that maximum is usually only in the order of 40% - 60% of input energy used. Large machines are already close to this maximum.

Um zu vermeiden, verraten zu müssen, woher sie meine Adresse (ganz klar illegal) haben, haben die sich gedacht, sie löschen einfach mal schnell alles. Ich habe natürlich nochmal nachgehakt, und wenn jetzt keine bessere Antwort kommt, geht die Sache an den verantwortlichen Landesdatenschutzbeauftragten.

lol, heute ist mir ein kreativer DSVGO-Take über den Weg gelaufen. Ich bekam Marketing-Spam einer Firma aus DE. Ich schieb die Firma an, mir bitte zu verraten, woher sie meine Email-Adresse haben. Die Firma antwortet:
"entschuldigen Sie bitte den versehentlichen Versand an Ihre persönliche E-Mailadresse. Wir haben diese unverzüglich gelöscht.
Auf Ihr Auskunftsverlangen vom 28.08.2023 teilen wir Ihnen mit, dass wir als Verantwortlicher keine personenbezogenen Daten über Sie verarbeiten."
