Today I escaped my first Escape Room.
At the request of my second eldest son, I threw my horde into our vehicle and drove halfway across the greater Phoenix area to get locked in a room with no technology for an hour. The only way they would let us out is if we solve a series of puzzles.
It was actually really fun! I think we'll be doing it again. No one even complained they couldn't use their phone. I don't think they even noticed the absence. Money well spent.

I was dropping off my car at the shop this morning for some routine maintenance. The guy that was taking my details looked..... well...... horrible. A little disheveled and huge bags under his eyes. He apologized to me and said he only got 6 hours of sleep last night.
Now, I'm not 100% he wasn't just loaded at work, but 6 hours??? I got barely over 5. That's not even rare for me. How much sleep do people normally get??? 6 hours I'd feel pretty damn rested. I haven't gotten 8 hours for a week.

Lake America? Are you fucking kidding me? I'm not fucking call it that. Does that orange dipshit realize that Ontario is a native word that just means "Great Lake"? The fucking lake isn't named after the Canadian province. Every time I start to think we've gotten about as stupid as we can get, that tangerine moron opens his fucking chicken nugget hole and exposes a whole new level of idiocy.

To me, the counter offer means that they looked at the work you were doing and realized that it was worth more to them than they were paying. The fact that they didn't do that in the first place means they're perfectly happy to not pay you what you're worth. My company has outright said that they make no effort to keep up with economic inflation when it comes to raises and promotions, so if you've been around any length of time, you're probably making less than market value.

I wonder just how much of my work day is devoted to dealing with security measures. I get that for some people, it's their whole job, but I'm not in NetSec or any other kind of security. I'm also not suggesting we get rid of security measures. Been there, done that. I just spend a whole ton of time with passwords and certs and keys of various varieties. It takes a not insignificant chunk of time out of my day.

#Musk: "We are 1,000% going to go bankrupt as a country and fail as a country, without AI and robots."
This is the shit that annoys me. We NEED AI and robots or we're doomed! Coincidentally, #Elon sells #AI and robots. I don't think AI is evil and should be avoided at all costs. I think it has its uses if handled properly, but I also think #ElonMusk is full of shit and just trying to add even more money to his coffers. He'll say what he thinks needs to be said to do it.

Oh, and not to be too much of a shill, but #Vivaldi in desktop mode works amazingly well this way. There's only a few things that separate the UI from the desktop version. It's not in the same league when it comes to customization, but it's slick to use.

The desktop stuff they're doing on the phone is pretty new I think. I suspect it's an effort to consolidate effort between their phones/tablets and their Googlebooks. The UI is strikingly similar. Quite a lot about it is still very "beta" feeling, and it can be frustrating to use if you have any other choice. They do have an official Terminal app though too, and that makes porting into your Linux systems the most seamless thing about the phone. Everything works like a desktop.

I have a thing called a Lapdock? It looks like a laptop, but there's no computer in it. You plug a SBC or phone into it via USB-C. The keyboard and touchpad are kinda garbage, but it also has standard USB ports that I just plug in normal keyboard/mouse hardware. Android has a "desktop" feature these days that puts it into a windowed mode. Works surprisingly well.

2026-07-22 18:34:36 UTC

My work laptop decided that it didn't like working so it stopped. I had a couple very frustrating hours spent on the phone with corporate tech support redoing things I'd already done, and now they're sending me a new computer. Until it shows up, I'm stuck literally working from my phone. My phone has access to a lot of corporate tools. Teams, Outook, Jira, GitHub, etc. The form factor just isn't particularly good to get stuff done. Android's desktop mode is surprisingly helpful. Who da thunk it?

My security cameras pick up a surprisingly large number of Waymos driving past my house when you consider I don't live in an area Waymo covers. I have confirmed they are driverless and don't seem to be carrying any passengers. It's like they're going for a drive.

Oh, OK. That's a notification of the impact of Google's retirement of Manifest v2. Unfortunately not something that Vivaldi specifically has control over. Version 8.0 of Vivaldi was based on Chromium 148, which still had the old code in it to run the Manifest v2 stuff. Vivaldi used that "retired" code to keep things going for extensions like uBlock Origin. Vivaldi 8.1 bumps the Chromium version to 150, and Google has stripped out that legacy code so Vivaldi can't do that anymore.

Can you elaborate on that? I don't have uBlock Origin installed (Vivaldi's integrated blocking has always been sufficient for my use), so I haven't noticed any issues like that.

2026-07-09 16:20:36 UTC

#Vivaldi just released version 8.1 today! This update isn't as flashy as the last one. The last one had some of the biggest UI updates in years and years, but this one is all about nailing things down and tightening up the code. No major visual or feature changes, just stability and bug swatting.

I'm taking from this particular instance that it was filler words. It was a list of 3 things we need to be doing, and one of the words was "deliberate" and another was "intentional". I think the 3rd was "motivated", but I honestly can't promise that. Still, 2 of those 3 words mean basically the same thing. I don't know if he needs a thesaurus, or he thinks we do.

2026-07-08 19:49:34 UTC

I think this points to the importance of a marketing team. Now, this is StatCounter, so grain of salt in the actual figures, but it's got Linux sitting at 4.39% worldwide desktop market share. That's pretty solid. ChromeOS is way back with 1.21%. Here's the question though. When was the last time you went into any store that sells computers and saw a Linux computer, but NOT a ChromeOS system. I see ChromeOS all the time. No Linux. Marketing is important.

In the United States (I'm not sure if this is true in other English speaking nations), "Let me make this easy to understand" implies the conversation as it has occurred so far is obviously too complex for you to grasp, so let me dumb this down for you. It's akin to saying, "I'll use small words so you understand." It's especially insulting when this kind of response comes from a peer who is probably less experienced in the field than you are.

2026-06-29 17:11:32 UTC

And that's fair, but you're not going to get a receptive response if you insult them to their face. I imagine that's true in most of not all cultures.

I don't know who needs to hear this, if anybody, but when you're talking to Americans using the phrase "Let me make this easy for you to understand" is EXTREMELY insulting. You might as well just start your sentence with "Hey moron". If that's your intent, OK. It's probably not a good idea to do it in person though. #FYI.

My wife sent me this because she knows how small details like this annoy me. I'm not OCD (or at least I've never been diagnosed as OCD). I get the joke, and it's funny, but I think it's fake. If it were me, that backwards pill would have been the first one out of the pack. It's center aligned, so it would have come cleanly out of the package without messing up the order. The second one would have been the other middle, and then work my way outwards until the only pills left are the outsides.

Yea, I have one of those too. I fully agree with your assessment. So far, the best I've tried is the Home Assistant Voice PE. It's a solid device that's easy to setup and use. The PineVoice is built on the same ESP32 tech, so I'm guessing that things may be similar? I ordered one, so I guess I'll find out if it's a useful device or if I just blew $75 on a paper weight.

2026-06-24 19:29:15 UTC

I remember reading about this a while back and being excited about it. If you're already a #HomeAssistant user this seems like it would be a great addition. I'll probably pick one up to try, but going all in on these will probably require some easy way to use them as an alarm clock. That's really the only thing keeping me from just ditching the Google speakers I have. Does anybody already have one? If so, what are your thoughts?

I looked at it a while back, but never got so far as paying for it so I don't think I got any of the fancy features. I keep testing AI summaries, but so far I haven't found any that don't cost half a years salary that keep things accurate. Unfortunately I'm not hugely trusting of human summarizers either, which is why I hit a bunch of sites with the same news to make sure I'm not just getting someone's perspective on things.

Ah, I spend an embarrassing amount of time each day just keeping up on the current events. I like to cover the same things from different sources to try to understand perspectives. A hypothetical AI (this doesn't exist) that could summarize news reliably and combine facts from multiple sources would be a huge time saver for me.

2026-06-22 18:45:31 UTC

I was reading this article about instances and ATProto.
https://overreacted.io/there-are-no-instances-in-atproto/
I was hoping to get some good information about how Bluesky and other services using ATProto worked. Instead, it lead with "I know RSS is still being used somewhere (podcasts?!) but its heyday is arguably behind." This kinda lost me. I use RSS all the damn time. Arguably more than the actual web. I've legitimately considered removing the front end of my site and just doing RSS. Am I the only one? Is RSS over?

2026-06-22 18:08:59 UTC

Depends on what I'm reading. Especially news. So many of these news sites want their authors to just wax philosophical for 1000 words when I just want the facts so I can get on with my life. I rarely use an AI in even those cases, I just skim and try to dig out what's pertinent, but I can absolutely see where an ACCURATE summary would save me some time.

Ignoring the "Apple" angle on this, Jonny Evans asks a very valid question. While he paints Apple as some kind of revolutionary, there have been other local services for almost as long as this AI wave has been a thing, and these local services are getting more and more capable. Improving local hardware makes it inevitable that the machine on your desk will be able to handle any AI task an average person could throw at it, and soon too. What happens to these massive datacenters then?

So, Eurosky would be entirely isolated from Bluesky unless some 3rd party middleware were to step in, so they'd get no advantage from the existing user base. It's also concerning in that not all components of Bluesky are open source, like their DM manager and their video processing. Eurosky is inherently disadvantaged compared to Bluesky. Honestly, I'd much rather see them throw some resources at Mastodon. If there are features they're missing, they can fork.

Yea, I'm not sure what I was going for there. What was going through my mind was the way Bluesky is setup is anybody can run a data server, but everybody has to go through their relay if they want to connect to Bluesky. I didn't know if Eurosky was actually just going to be a data server or have their own complete relay stuff setup. If they're just a data server, they're still reliant on Bluesky. If they're hosting their own relay, they're not attached to Bluesky.

I had to lookup to see what that was. Honestly, I tried Bluesky and it just bored me. I probably still have an account, but I haven't checked it since probably a week after I created it. I see the motivation to do it, but if it interfaces with Bluesky the data won't be protected. If it doesn't you're not going to have a userbase to work from. Neither option sounds particularly attractive to me. YMMV.

It is, but it's based in the UK I believe, which is still more faithful to the point of EU Digital Sovereignty than still using Microsoft technology just a little less and with a different logo. I guess since they went Qwant instead of Mojeek people in the EU disagree with me.

Well, it says they went live last year based on technologies that have been redesigned since 2023. I'm not really sure what that means. If I was looking for independence from the United States I'd probably have gone with Mojeek. As I said before, I'm far from an expert on these matters. It just seems weird for a Digital Sovereignty movement trying to escape USian tech to migrate to a service that's still 50% Microsoft with a European veneer. I don't know if there's a better choice.

2026-06-11 16:49:18 UTC

Yea, but they started that in 2023 didn't they? According to Wikipedia their results are still 50% Microsoft if we're being generous, and their ad revenue is almost entirely dependent on Microsoft. Is Wikipedia out of date or are they still that reliant on American tech?

2026-06-11 16:26:14 UTC

I've been spending some time researching the EU's Digital Sovereignty movement lately because it seems like a real opportunity for Open Source software to get a foothold in some markets where it's traditionally faced challenges. I'm not from the EU, and I'm far from an expert on these matters. One of the recent decisions that's confused the holy hell out of me is the choice of Qwant for search. Nothing against #Qwant, but they're HEAVILY dependent on Microsoft last I checked. Not true anymore?

2026-06-08 19:17:12 UTC

I've been using alternatives to Office for years. I started with Star Office in the late 90s or early 2000s. I stuck with it when it became OpenOffice, but moved to LibreOffice when Oracle got their claws into it. I've pretty much stayed with LibreOffice. The recent push for digital sovereignty from the EU has done a lot to move technology in a direction I like. I'm interested in Office EU. I was surprised it was built on Open, not Libre though. It does look nice. Anyone have experience with it?

I use a unified search/address field, so I can type a URL or a search term and either works. The top is the tab bar, which looks a little weird to me with only one tab in it, but I didn't want to overload stuff for the screenshot. My workspaces and browser controls are in the same bar as my tabs, which cuts down on the number of bars I have running around.

It really is a power users browser. I enjoyed your feedback. One of if not the best thing about Vivaldi is almost every time you ask the question, "can I change that?", the answer is going to be "Yes." Vivaldi is customizable in the extreme. I'm attaching a screenshot of my current configuration, which I'm sure is different than pretty much everybody else's anywhere. It's a really good browser, and a little time spent configuring it to your preferences makes it great.

I'm super happy to see this. It'll be a great day when #ElonMusk is the only active account on #Twitter and he spends his days screaming into the void and no one answers back.

I gave this a spin, and it does work. I have two profiles setup. I had to setup the second profile just like a new install, but after I logged in it brought my settings from my account no problem. I don't have any custom key bindings, so I can't confirm that stuff, but my settings seem to have come across. I can also access my workspaces and tabs in the other profile from both the tab drop down and the side panel. It treats that other profile just like a different computer.

Maybe? I've never tried since I don't use profiles. Hopefully @npub19rt…adh9 will correct me if I'm wrong, but it might be possible to have the different profiles sync to the same Vivaldi account? I know you can sync settings that way as I do that between computers, but I've never tried it with profiles on the same computer. If you're syncing to the same account, that should (HYPOTHETICALLY) give you access to the tabs and workspaces on a read only basis, but dunno for sure. Grain of salt.

Yea, unfortunately that's something that Vivaldi has inherited from its Chromium base. They don't have a middle ground on the Profiles/containers. You're either in the same profile/container, or completely and entirely different. Personally, I don't use profiles. I do use the heck out of Workspaces though, and I've gotten better about it but I still have over 100 tabs open on multiple devices. Vivaldi is better at handling tabs than any browser I've ever used.

Of course, I'm trying to enjoy a frosty beverage after finishing my class and work calls me for a couple of down APIs. I don't even recognize them.

I actually gave this a try today. My wife has a USB-C port replicator she uses for her computer, and I just unplugged her laptop from it and plugged in my phone. That easy.
It was surprisingly usable. I didn't get too far into the nitty-gritty, but #Vivaldi opened up in what looked like a Desktop mode. The app drawer worked, and I fired up Google Docs no problem to type on a bigger screen.
I only took 5 minutes, but those 5 minutes implied this could replace ChromeOS.

After a few minutes of toying with the new #Vivaldi, I have some quick thoughts.
I think a point that needs emphasis is this: "While other browsers add AI summarization and Edge pushes Copilot integration, Vivaldi 7.8 ships features users have actually requested."
There are a couple not huge, but super useful updates in this new version. Opening links in tiled tabs. Love that. I don't think they even mentioned opening links in different workspaces. Great feature.

I can see where those kind of features would be helpful. Creating Shorts with an AI version of yourself? Not so much. I'm already not a fan of Shorts even when real people make them. This just feels like abuse waiting to happen.

I honestly don't know where I see your content more. I obviously follow you here, but I also watch your rss feed on your site. I probably spend more time on my FreshRSS instance than any other site on the Internet (with the possible exception of Fosstodon). I also follow your RSS feed here too:
https://fosstodon.org/@kev/with_replies.rss
I guess that makes RSS the best choice whether I see it on Fosstodon or via your site's RSS feed.

Well, centralization is a problem, but Fosstodon didn't even block Threads. Historically at least, Fosstodon has left most of those kinds of decisions to the individuals. Since I can see @npub1dlz…uxsy's profile, I doubt it's something that Fosstodon has done.

Yea, it's still not in a full, production ready version with Firefox so I'm giving them a lot of slack. If it still works like it does now when it's billed as being fully ready, I'll be disappointed.

I'm not a subscriber to Peacock, and it's stiff like this that guarantees I never will be. I actually watched part of a show on Amazon Prime last week, but I turned it off after less than 10 minutes because of the constant ad interruptions. These are all services that if you have them, you're paying for them. I don't pay for a service to watch commercials. I don't understand why most of the Internet hasn't hoisted the Jolly Roger by now.

It took me an embarrassingly large amount of time to figure out the reason my script wasn't working correctly is because I had a [ -f filename.txt ] instead of [ ! -f filename.txt ]. Like, multiple hours here. :sadkev:

Just watched this video on the early days of #IRC. It brought back a lot of memories of all the hours I spent there back in the 90s. I even learned some stuff about why it was called the #EFNet and things like that. I met my wife there back in 1995, so those were important years for me. I know it just isn't the same these days, but understand what they're talking about there at the end.

#Vivaldi has a new release, and it's let me simplify my UI even further. It's pretty amazing that a browser with as many options as @npub19rt…adh9 has can still have such a simple bespoke interface. Nothing compares.

The more I play with #FreshRSS the better it gets. User queries are saving me so much time it's hard to quantify. For example, if I want to search a particular category for a particular phrase, easy as pie. I can search my Technology category for Zorin Linux. If there's something I don't want to spend time on, that's easy too. I use Android, so I can create a query for iOS and just mark everything read that it finds. Like a topic but not an author or site? You can filter on that too. Love it.
