freedom of speech includes freedom to say gross shit, within legal limits. That's a right dick heads get to use ad nauseam.
It does *absolutely not* include the right to be listened to politely without pushback, or be welcomed at all parties.
Censorship is suppression of free speech, not telling dick heads to fuck off and prevent their gross shit from reaching your brain.
It's so tiring when the dick head in question doesn't get that...

The actual quote: “That points to extinction. And I don’t say that lightly. I say it in absolute terms. I’m saying, if things continue unabated as they are, then we are facing, as a human race, potential extinction.”
As dire as that is, in no way did the expert ever say we're facing "absolute extinction". They used those words in two different sentences.
The message is not: we're doomed. The message is: we are risking doom if we don't act.
Very different message, isn't it? #climateEmergency

totally reasonable, probably even cheap.
If someone's not able to afford your price, there's no shame at either end, right?
That said, if I really want to do a job, I'll do it for free if that's what it takes. Money isn't very important at all if you ask me. But I would not work for someone that undervalued my work.

short term we should just use less of it, long term carbon itself provides materials far superior to concrete and steel.
If we'd invest all the budgets going into war right now into research instead, it wouldn't take more than a few decades before we can produce something like graphene at scale.
Not super realistic under capitalism and fascism, but certainly possible from a more scientific perspective.
Oh well 🙂

lots of interesting observations thanks. To hopefully unconfuse: the only important metric is the absolute number for fossils. If that doesn't come down we're fucked.
It's going up, globally, at record rates, also for China.
My guess is that the main reason for this detail is that we're outsourcing production to China, instead of consuming less, and another wild guess is the main culprits still are cement and steel.

yeah exactly, I'm not here to argue about the ethics, but it is clear that if we cut animal protein consumption in half, we can almost double the nutrition value of the same area of land.
and luckily farming systems that are nicer to animals are also more productive, so there's plenty of room for more ethical behavior there.

that brings us to a sustiainable ~80 billion #solarpunk vegans or so.
Then if we really go sci-fi, we could use the oceans for floating farms and add another 200 kmˆ2 of useful surface to the mix before we need any investments to go to mars.
over 250 billion people could have a decent meal on this wonderful planet before we need to worry about overpopulation really.

I hope that you don't mind me adding to the thread. I wrote about this recently and I think your .5 acre assumption is more constraining than reality.
There are three reasons to be more optimistic I think:
1. there's more agricultural land than arable land, which we can use much more effciently (˜x5),
2. there's a lot of surfaces we can use (>x2)
3. a hectare is two acres (x2)
Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Two simple chilling facts
1. There's four orders of magnitude more solar energy available than we need to power civilization.
https://norden.social/@hart/116079729462399297
2. Most of the emissions that are causing civilization to collapse are caused by fossil fuel industry and transport itself.
https://norden.social/@hart/116079723621384871
The conclusion that fossil fuels are the main enemy of humanity is not far fetched _at all_ at this point.

Not shutting down existing nuclear often makes a ton of sense though.

affordable doesn't have to be crap. I'm living in a house that was built on a shoestring budget just after ww2. Used to be a super cheap coop rental. Fine, simple, small house. Not affordable on modal salary now, not because of cost, but because of artificial scarcity.
We don't need fancy lofts, but simple ~60sqm homes that can house a couple at reasonable cost. If there's enough of those they would be affordable without trouble.
