But the deliberate algorithmic manipulation of users' feeds to induce emotional response was the red flag for me. That's a mass psychological experiment run on human subjects with no control, no informed consent, and no guardrails -- the very sort of thing that academic research ethics boards exist to prevent (think Tuskegee or Zimbardo for examples).
Had I stayed around, I'm pretty sure it would have been a bad thing for my mental health.

It seems like no one is doing this. Everyone is falling all over each other to be the first, use it as much as possible, and sack as many qualified staff as they can.
But are any of them doing due diligence? Just the really basic stuff:
What is the value of a machine that cannot produce the same output when given identical inputs?
What is the ROI from a process that burns resources at a rate that cannot be measured, because nobody knows how many tokens a given unit of work will consume?
How stable is the business model of a company whose cost to provide the service is tens or hundreds of times greater than the revenue they're making from their customers?
How long will it be before some truly aggrieved people start loading up cheap consumer drones with explosives and flying them into data centres?

@nprofile…av6q I've been telling anyone who will listen at MPI, MBIE, MfE, and other agencies that we need public investment into a massive scaleup of #biochar production. Not just because it can help us repurpose a lot of otherwise problematic forestry residues and sequester a lot of carbon in the first instance.
But also because there is now plenty of peer-reviewed evidence for its role in reducing #GHG emissions in the primary sector. Feeding it to ruminant livestock can result in 25% reductions in methane emissions. Using it on pastoral soils can lower nitrous oxide production from fertiliser use and animal urine by similar amounts. Adding it to effluent sumps also inhibits methanogenesis, and in soils it adsorbs nutrient ions to prevent leaching into groundwater. And it has beneficial effects on animal health and performance.
The stuff is just short of miraculous, and if we embedded its use in farming systems we would turn much of our food and fibre production carbon neutral or even negative.
But for all the time and energy spent giving briefings, wrokshops, preparing funding appllications, and developing business cases for funding, our cause has achieved close to bugger-all. Meanwhile, tens of millions of $$ have gone to research on methane inhibition products that will be expensive and unlikely to get widespread adoption...if and when they make it to market.
The institutional inertia and risk aversion is breathtaking. Couple that with successive govts putting far too much emphasis on planting pine trees, and the current bunch of climate destroyers rolling back pretty much every decent policy that was in place, and I'm often tempted to say sod it all and go somewhere that isn't run by third-rate neolliberal morons who keep yammering on about how "innovative" Kiwi farmers are. (hint: they're not)
I really wish the opposition parties would sit down with me and listen. Opportunity actually gets it,. and I won't waste my time with the right wing.

Well, you'd think that by choosing a mature, well-established microblogging and self-publishing platform all the teething issues and weird kinks that were present, oh, 10-12 years ago, like redirect loops, poor SSL handling, and outright hostility to reverse proxies, would all be pretty well solved.
Spoiler alert: They aren't. I'm seeing the same stupid shit in 7.0 that was around in the bad old days. Redirect hell and 405 errors are still very much a thing and the amount of forum bandwidth devoted to "solving" these persistent failures is phenomenal.
And all this is above and beyond the stench that has been coming from the project since Mullenweg started his inane power plays and set about destroying the community.

So, yesterday I found out:
A close friend has been diagnosed with breast cancer;
Another close friend and colleague's brain tumour, in remission for three years, is growing again;
My eldest is pretty certain they're going to move to Melbourne in a year or so.
All in all, a pretty big closeout to what has been mostly a downer of a month.
On the upside, I spent much of the day with some good friends my ex had alienated. We talked radical mutual aid, resilient energy systems, and pruned fruit trees. I think I'll be doing lots of this in coming months.

For decades, NZ pastoral systems were described by agronomists worldwide as a "miracle"...temperate climate, decent soils, and ample rainfall meant that a farmer could keep a pasture in permanent cover with a mix of ryegrass and clover, and get a profitable yield of milk, meat, and fibre by grazing stock outdoors year round without any off-farm inputs. It was sustainable (if you ignore the fact that much of the land was stolen) and provided the basis for a thriving export trade as well as feeding a growing nation.
The humble clover plant was the key to all of this, with its symbiotic rhizobial bacteria happily taking atmospheric nitrogen in and turning it into soluble nitrates at just enough of a rate to feed the grasses. As long as you didn't overstock or abuse the soil through poor management, the system could keep ticking over indefinitely, with maybe a bit of seaweed or rock dust from time to time to top up the mineral levels.
Of course, capitalism had to wreck all of that. As dairy intensification became the trend in the 1990s, industrial farming was the model and synthetic fertilisers, especially urea, began to dominate and push out clover from pasture mixes. And as any junkie knows, the first hit may be free but every one after that costs more.
Now we have a sector addicted to nitrogen, mainlining stuff shipped halfway around the globe and turning its back on the leakage into groundwater and rivers. The excess nitrogen also "burns up" soil carbon stocks and decreases microbial diversity along with the resilience of the grass. And the feed quality of the pasture goes down, turning to the equivalent of junk food and causing metabolic imbalances in the animals that eat it...most current-day dairy farmers have never seen cow shit that isn't liquid.
So maybe the crisis in the Middle East is a blessing in disguise. Just like it's supercharging transition around the world, maybe it will catalyse some major changes here. #biochar #regen

Compare this (admittedly suboptimal) experience to what it's like to be trapped in a plane on the tarmac for three hours because of a major snafu at the terminal. Yep, I did that once at DFW and it was unpleasant. @nprofile…xpw3 I stayed with some friends last month when I travelled to the South Island for a festival. One of them told me all about how he's gone all in on vibe coding. The thing that struck me most was how he described the cognitive burden of wrangling the various agents when he was doing a "session" lasting 5-6 hours in a typical case.
He said after he wrapped up each time, he was utterly spent and couldn't do anything requiring focus for the remainder of the day. Didn't sound much like a net positive to me, especially since he's still attempting to vet the code and integrate it himself.

@nprofile…a8pz I used to think Halter was pretty neat, but then they went all in on the slopification. I'm also not a fan of farm management systems that depend on remote servers...connectivity falters and your stock are everywhere they're not supposed to be.
