Use after free and bounds checking are often the only bugs left is well developed GNU C projects and well that's a simple matter of fixing the mistake and the bug is fixed.
Using Rust for a big project will result in exponentially more security issues than using GNU C, as the more syntactical tokens required to implement certain functionality, the greater the number of bugs you have.
Remember that most bugs are logic bugs - not memory bugs. Memory bugs are easy to find and fix, while logic bugs are not.
The borrow checker in Rust pretty much forces the programmer to implement logic bugs - but the resulting program is so complicated, it's very difficult to find them.

Even though the LZW patent has long expired, gif is still a terrible format (it always was).
png is always smaller and is truly lossless, thus if you see a gif image, you should convert it to png and delete the gif.

GNU ada, perl, lisp, guile, python (did it become proprietary?), go and GNU Bash are all memory safe (almost all boring high-level languages are memory-safe).
Memory safety is a joke - most errors are logic errors and rust ironically causes more security issues by how the borrow checked pretty much forces the programmer to implement logic errors.

LLVM is now proprietary software as they accept LLM-copied commits and you can't use rust without the latest corresponding LLVM.
Maybe if gccrs ever manages to compile hello world, then you could compile hello world in rust as free software.

Clearly the developers are braindead, considering that they develop with github - but if several >people have worked on a language frontend for compiler for 7+ years and it still can't compile hello world, the language cannot be anything but a proprietary language.
You can write a basic compiler for a free language like C that compiles complicated programs like hello world in like 3 days.

Guix is an OS that uses proprietary restriction schemes (a CoC) and unsurprisingly, they don't bother to remove identified proprietary software - kate >25.08.3 is proprietary software due to a license change in a 3rdparty library, which was reported on the 26th of January, but they've gone and updated to; https://packages.guix.gnu.org/packages/kate/25.12.2/ which is still proprietary software.

In that case, you would need to hit the magic sysrq key to detach the keyboard from xorg to allow you to change to a tty.
Neither xfce4 nor i3 seems to lock up when sshfs locks up.

@nprofile…d73q Deno is proprietary software, as in practice it is used purely for the execution of proprietary software (other engines are used to execute the limited amount of free JavaScript).
As you can see in the linked page, mpv and VLC are now slopware, that contain random code copy-pasted into them via LLM's.
If a project contains code with the license stripped off, it is proprietary software.

I don't really understand why they don't add a timeout of like 20 seconds and reinstate the ssh tunnel if it doesn't reconnect by then.

justification offered for CoC adoption, namely that they make projects more inclusive and
welcoming.
The GitHub Open Source Survey of 2017 (n=5,495) and its 2024 follow-up (n=8,452) pro-
vide longitudinal data. Between 2017 and 2024, a period during which CoC adoption accel-
erated dramatically, contributors reported a significant increase in interpersonal challenges,
including threats of violence, impersonation, sustained harassment, stalking, and doxxing.
The behavioral impact shifted: experiencing rudeness, stalking, and name-calling became
more strongly associated with stopping contributions, adopting pseudonyms, and avoiding
communities. Despite (or perhaps because of) mass CoC adoption, the problems CoCs were
supposed to solve worsened.
Li et al. (2021) analyzed 3,824 GitHub issues related to codes of conduct and found that
“oftentimes, the initial addition of a code of conduct does not involve much community par-
ticipation and input”, confirming the intolerant minority mechanism described in Section 3.
The study also documented cases where CoCs were used both proactively (setting norms)
and reactively (governing disputes), with the latter category generating significantly more
community conflict`
This is pretty good evidence that CoC's are tools of proprietary sabotage (who would have thought) and real free software projects don't use proprietary conflict-inducing schemes.

- Radioactive materials are generally not very poisonous - the radiation is the problem.
- There isn't only 230 years of Uranium left - there's plenty in the ocean that can be extracted if that becomes more economical to do so and for any that is extracted, more will dissolve.
- Uranium doesn't "release" its energy - it gets full of neutron poisons, which need to be removed for fission to continue at a high rate.
- Fuel needs to be stored in pools for only a few years for the latent heat to cool off - you can use that latent heat to generate electricity, so that's actually beneficial.
- Something untrue about radiation release about Fukushima (the thick concrete containment building and distance means that even with the water pool boiled away, radiation wouldn't be a problem a reasonable distance away) - thousands couldn't have possibly been killed, as thousands of people would not be permitted to stand up against the reactor for days on end.
- No, merely opening the storage would not release radiation into a future civilization - those smart enough to dig that far down and break open casks would known what radioactive isotopes are.
Solar only works during the day and with a significant amount of solar installed, a significant amount of people will die falling down.
Passive safety reactor designs do exist and it really isn't that hard to hire competent people.

Uranium could be collected from the ocean in a much less damaging manner, but that's more expensive than mining or leaching.
Politics are used to prevent disposal of slightly used fuel - it's really not that hard to choose a tectonically stable desert, dig a deep hole, throw the fuel down and fill the hole back up (in such a desert, there would be no other reason to dig a hole that deep and realistically anyone advanced enough to dig a hole that deep will be able to detect radiation).
Or you can just throw it right into the ocean like the USA did and nothing will happen (probably less of a radioactive isotope release than coal plants, but I need to do the calculations really).
Or if that's too hard, everyone can deliver all of their slightly used "high level nuclear waste" to me for me to dispose - I'll be glad to put it to proper use.
Nuclear doesn't need to be that expensive - but braindead regulations that aren't about safety make it significantly more expensive, but even then, the amount of power output that can be achieved easily returns a profit if the reactor is allowed to keep operating.

Nuclear is also the cleanest and safest form of mass energy production (it has killed far, far less people than coal, gas, oil and even wind turbines and solar (unfortunately you can fall down while installing solar panels or wind turbines)), but it means not having much dependence on oil or other fossil fuels, so it's not allowed.

Ink tank or laser printers that don't sabotage 3rd party ink or toner generally have lower printing costs than Horrible Products printers.
Note that you must print all colours with an inkjet printer at least once a month, otherwise the print heads will irreversibly clog.
The printer needs to support IPP for it to have a chance of sometimes working.

The current proprietary timeline is known to be the reality - working towards fixing such degeneracy, is very different to losing grasp on reality and thus completely giving up.
The FSF is not particularly lacking in funding and manpower - although it would of course be better to have more.
The GPLv3 development process was public and fixed many bugs in the GPLv2 and everyone who participated got what they wanted - even a business got the ability to digitally handcuff hardware and refuse to provide installation information in its commercial-only hardware as they wanted.
Unlike, the GPLv3, the GPLv2 forbids such scheme - you have to provide installation information no matter what; "For an executable work, complete source code means all the source code for all modules it contains, plus any associated interface definition files, plus the scripts used to control compilation and installation of the executable."
GNU sown more freedom by daring to write a more free license, with less freedom bugs, as the public wanted and people seriously complained about the more freedom that has been reaped?

@nprofile…apm9 Uninitialized variables in a C function are undefined behavior - the compiler can decide to zero the variable, or leave it uninitialized - whichever seems faster - so you should always initialize a variable before using the value.
Variables are only guaranteed to get zerod if those are global variables, like;

But that's not a good habit to get into - it's better to always initialize variables.

@nprofile…sut4 Machinery that only loads malware should be removed - as having such machinery there, makes a recommendation that the user load malware.
*All* CPUs with speculative execution contain speculative vulnerabilities and this will always be the case no matter how much proprietary software is thrown at the flawed execution model (vendors only provide one or two updates and then stop updating) - a new attack will always be found every few months to a year.
The concept of throwing everything out and purchasing new after only a few years, or every year (as that's the only way to get microcode updates that are claimed to fix the latest exploits as only the latest models are updated) is reckless and destructive.
Removing a message that tells the user to install malware without thinking is to respect the user and to not baby them - the user does know about such speculative execution vulnerabilities and has been told about them too after all.
The concept that free software (software that serves the user), will go "extracting secrets" is totally braindead - if data is needed to serve the user, the free software gets it directly, as provided by the user, rather than using a side channel.
It's only if you run proprietary malware, will the program possibly attempt to access information that it shouldn't have access too - the solution to that problem, is to not run proprietary malware on your computer.
As far as I can tell, VM's waste RAM and CPU cycles to fail to achieve a security benefit, or to actually add security vulnerabilities (as hardware designers are far worse at implementing hardware that implements a secure VM, than software designers are at designing secure software).
For example, running a VM on an Opteron 63XX CPU allows an attacker to gain root via NMI, while it seems that attack does not work if you don't use a VM.
