With all the fuss in the US you might be wondering about birthright citizenship in Australia. Are you a citizen if you were born here?
That was removed in 1986 (Labor government). Because someone dared use it in 1985's Kioa v West; and that a baby born to Tongan parents could be Australian upset both the pearl clutchers and the racists.
We're now a 'right of blood' country. And if that sounds a little 1930's to you, that wouldn't be wrong.
Practically it's also a major pain in the arse for people born after 1986. Once upon a time a birth certificate was proof of citizenship. Now you can be trawling for identity documents of grandparents.

It's not surprising to non-US observers at all. The control of US governments by coal and petro interests is obvious.
The article itself is a string of WTFs. Solar and wind being 19% of generation is pathetic. Usually daytime generation is almost entirely rooftop solar, not: "rooftop solar panels on houses or businesses, while helpful, provide just a tiny fraction of the total power supply".
Basically, the US is seeking competitive advantage by avoiding the costs of new energy infrastructure, whatever that does to the climate. Through a terrible coincidence of timing, the capex of the new energy infrastructure of solar, wind and batteries is cheaper than the opex of gas, coal, nuclear or hydro, so this strategy has backfired.
Here is an overcast windy day. Rooftop solar (light yellow) is still 2/3rd of daytime generation. Wind (green) is doing the rest of the heavy lifting, you can see how those turbine blades are angled to not produce much during the day. All this is only electricity visible to the grid, so about half of actual electricity use. The graph doesn't include my workplace or home (both run on on-site solar during the day and battery overnight).

I think the advice was also to do with physical hard drives. For workstation usage the I/O from the upgrade was the height of disk activity, and thus the time when a disk failure was most likely to occur.

There is history.
What fuels the anger is the annoyance at the lack of reflection within Gnome of its role in the failure of desktop Linux.
Most notably it's insular design choices in Gnome 3, and the early shipment of that non-ready software, reducing Linux's share of the market from MacOS levels to a third of that.
Today, yet another insular design choice by Gnome. Of course people are going to give them stick.

In a weird 'everything old is new again moment we're back to the opening era with helping people with Linux adoption.
For a long time Linux has been for use by computing professionals, whilst being of interest to hobbyists.
But the wheel has now returned to a point where there is a tide of new people, who have never used a Unix-like system, who want to migrate their data, so are doing the trickiest type of installation, and need a hand over the initial hurdle.
I am all for it. Operating systems die if they don't have Real Life Users. Just in the past two years it has become very apparent why a free software operating system is a good choice for personal use.

The single biggest error in IPv6 was the textual representation of the address. The lack of a reasonable regular expression to locate a IPv6 address is argument enough.
The second error was the reluctance to acknowledge naming as essential to a networking protocol, the lesson taught by Banyan VINES "StreetTalk". If IPv6 had done that then Router Solicitation would have learned the DNS server and it's service name suffix from Day One, rather than a half-supported patch to the protocol years later. Stopping foolishness like Stateless DHCPv6.

Using credit cards is itself really old school. Australia works on debit card contactless and direct deposit. The occasional cash (maybe once in the past year). Credit cards are a corporate expense mechanism, ordinary people tend to use a debit/eftpos card. Cheques are invariably some sort of misconduct, and I haven't seen a personal cheque in twenty years. My mechanic accepts contactless (for which banks charge), prefers direct deposit (for which they don't), and his direct deposit Osko code is in a QR on the wall to prevent typos.
There is no way he will accept a cheque. If only because he'd then have to go to the nearest bank branch to deposit it, some 20km away.
ATMs are also rapidly becoming a thing if the past, and they have massive fees.

Australian television shows on US politics often have a tone of despair at just how bad the Democratic Party is at the art of politics. And, related to that, how the Party lacks the ability to make necessary hard decisions.
Especially around asking people to retire. Arguably that one failing has doomed the Party (Ginsburg, Biden, Feinstein, Connolly, Pelosi, ...). Even Harris and Walz were coming to a Presidential election at the end of their careers. There is a different timeline where the Democratic Party retained power in the national legislature and courts simply by not dying in place.

Controlling wind generation makes sense. They are not quiet, and so limited them to large properties is good regulation.
Rooftop solar+battery is basically an unstoppable force. Because it's a good deal for everyone but the coal and gas mining companies.
The idea that cutting subsidies makes much of a difference is quaint at current prices. The payback on my huge solar+battery system was three years, that is, the loan was the same as the electricity bill for three years. So from this year it's all free electricity.
The stuff if so cheap that my new streetlight has built in cells and battery. That's mounted on the electricity pole.
HOAs are interesting. They look like an obstacle. But to a systems installer they are a massive opportunity to do sales across an entire development.

Tried to configure a OpenDNS filtering service on my Fritzbox modem with an ISP which offers IPv6. Don't even bother.
OpenDNS won't let you register a IPv6 subnet. The modem prefers IPv6 DNS servers (because there's often no CGNAT). So the Fritzbox selects the ISP's IPv6 DNS server over the IPv4 OpenDNS server, meaning no filtering occurs.
OpenDNS does allow access to the resolver via IPv6, but this does not work if you have an account with filtering preferences.
To be clear, this issue is with OpenDNS. Not Fritzbox. Not the IPv6 protocol.

Science has spent a good fourty years encouraging scientific writing to be more straightforward and with a real authorial voice.
This is not to say that clearness of expression is not longer desired. It is to say that expression should be to the point.
It's disappointing that you had this experience. Especially since a more direct writing style allows more content per page, and scientific writing is ruthless with page limits. So this teacher is not preparing you for the 'real world'.
In business, communication matters even more. People spend days 'workshopping' (cooperatively editing) a single page 'pitch' (the reasons why investors should fund the company).

A quick note that the issue with the use of Signal in the infamous Mother of All Group Chats is not encryption. Nor is the Signal program deficient for use by folk like us.
The issue is authorisation (the authority to do a thing) and, specifically, labelling.
Those TOP SECRET stamps you see on TV are labels. Authorisation schemes are all based around labels: people with *this* label can access items with *that* label.
Government information security is awash with labels. Security clearances, nationality, project codewords, compartmental information -- all are labels. The idea being that a person with a Secret clearance, and "cleared" into compartmented information label, and "read into" a codeword project can access the document with labels SECRET//CRYPTO//AWASH HAVEN (and I am absolutely avoiding real-life labels here, because I don't need ASIO at my door waving the Official Secrets Act).
Now you can see how a military group chat will work. Each chat will have a label (say SECRET//BOMBPEOPLE) and people seeking to join that chat will need to have labels which indicate they have a Secret clearance and have been read into the BOMBPEOPLE codeword.
You can also see that if we invite the Editor of The Atlantic to that SECRET//BOMBPEOPLE conversation then the Editor will lack the labels indicating the Secret clearance and BOMBPEOPLE codeword and their attempt to join the group will not be authorised.
Signal, being communications for ordinary folk, doesn't support much authorisation and does not need military-style label-based authorisation, with its labelling of people, communication channels, and information. Imagine the hassle of configuring all those labels just to text your dad.
This is really what is meant when experts say that Signal is not suitable for national security use.

it is doing its best to look like people's expectation of a Faraday Cage. But have a look at the solder along the front -- that's not continuous. Also the mesh holes are not equal-sized in all polarisations. Most damningly, there is no effective RF ground from the Cage into the earth.
Generally the real deal looks very much like a safe, with airflow being through baffles so there is no line of sight from the equipment (that is, a signal has to strike a ground). There is a vast deal of care to ensure that each plate has a ready RF path to ground -- to prevent the Cage from becoming a re-radiating antenna. Because of the 'antenna' risk there will be backup earth paths so that no one failure causes the system to fail. There will be huge cables to dedicated ground stakes.
Then every cable will have its own treatment to stop it piggy-backing other signals. Particularly the mains, since that leaves the building. Really serious systems work from battery, which is charged by a rectifier when the system is not in use, just to avoid any possibility of signal on exterior cables.
Of course the Faraday Cage concept is widely used. For example if you are building shielding for a power supply you can drill holes for airflow which leak frequencies which are not those generated by the power supply.

Japanese has a spectrum of formality. It's expressed in tone, speech speed, word choice, some word endings, and some words can or cannot be used in different scenarios of relationships. It differs by the gender of the people in the conversation.
Then there is straightforward cultural differences. To pick on Korea this time, think about dating, rings, and the phrases for attraction and love. None of those line up with the US concepts.
Automatic translation is a great advance. It's great for videos. But trusting it for a two-way conversation is asking for hurt feelings.

Australia came within a few trips to Paris of winning the launch facility for Ariane. We'd most likely have won it if we'd had the foresight to get involved directly in negotiations ourselves, rather than trust the UK to be working hard for our interests. But of course the Australian Government would then have to be prepared to politically defend a raft of flights and extended hotel stays for ministers and public servants in Paris.
Australia is a great place to do business for space. The basic issue is that we decided we didn't want to be in that industry, so we aren't. But nor is the government willing to spend the higher stakes now needed to be at the table.

They are for FORTH to read the tape. It's likely to be "pages" of text in 1KB pages, each being 16 lines of 64 ASCII characters, space padded. So if you can get the bytes off the tape (and the BPI is low enough for any tape drive to do that) then reconstructing the dumped data into a modern format won't be too hard.

It is useful to start to prepare for a password database by bookmarking each site you use. Bookmarks are great security in themselves, as using a bookmark prevents typo-jacking.
Adding a password manager is then an evening's work of making your way through the bookmarks, changing the passwords.
Start by adding a long random password to your email account and reconnecting each of your email clients. Because a email can reset an account there can be no shortcuts here.
Install a phone TOTP 2FA app (eg, AndOTP) and, if you can afford it, buy two Security Keys.
As you work through the bookmarks changing the passwords, add 2FA where the website allows that. Preferably a Security Key, otherwise TOTP.
Backup the password database and TOTP configuration to USB storage you don't use for anything else and you keep offline. The USB-A + USB-C storage keys are great for this as they work with laptop and phone. Store the USB and the second Security Key in a safe place.

I expect hacked off e-bike insurers will fix this for us. In Australia the NRMA (a road service and member auto insurance organisation) is already saying harsh words about lack of regulation of batteries and lack of recovery of stolen e-bikes.
(Like all Australian road service organisations, the NRMA wants to ride the e-bike wave. Their internal research shows that it is purchasers of a household's second car who are mostly members, they expect a proportion of those to move to e-bikes, and they want those people to remain members.)

Google deleted my entire pension fund's computing. One moment they had servers and storage, the next moment they were all gone, unrecoverably. Only the fund's disaster recovery backups saved them from this, well, disaster.
