Melissa found a high quality framed print of Burt Reynolds in his iconic 1972 Cosmopolitan centerfold at the same antique store I bought my uranium measuring cup yesterday. She snapped a picture to send her sisters but I was teasing her and said she was saving that for later. She rolled her eyes and said "Burt doesn't do it for me" and I said "what you don't want a mustache ride?" She almost fell over laughing.
Fun antiquing trip. 😂

We're starting to let these tromboncino squash harden into winter squash. They weigh a lot and should hold us over through winter.

I didn't know that but Melissa is a notary so I've never had to look.
The price of cars has gotten completely out of hand. A friend sent me a picture of a Jeep Grand Wagoneer sticker, it was $148,000. We paid $85,000 for our house. I guess one could live in the Wagoneer. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Custard describes the glass color, milky off white. Vaseline glass is yellow because Vaseline was more yellow back during the Depression when it was made. Fenton Glass made a lot of interesting glass pieces.
As for usage, I'm assuming just decorative. The floral patterns where hand painted on so it's not intended for hard use. The other dishes I have were actually used by my grandparents.

I picked up this Fenton custard glass ruffled basket after voting today. A lady in my town had it, from her mom's curio cabinet, I paid $30. She had a lot of interesting pieces but I'm only looking for a piece of custard and vaseline glass to round out my shelf. The basket is in mint condition and the hand painted flowers are perfect, she took good care of it. It makes a neat living room display.

Melissa and I went walking in one of our smaller parks to avoid the farmers market crowds in our main park and came across this hornet's nest. It's not something you see every day so I thought I'd share.

I guess my family are the odd ducks. We see 1-3 movies at the theater a month depending what is out. Sometimes more if a lot is out or classic movies I want to see on a big screen are showing.

You can literally feel the air outside. It's thick and wet. It's going to get a few degrees hotter by mid afternoon. It's fucking miserable right now. We have the AC turned up to 78°F to conserve a little power while we're gone but all the fans are on moving air for pets so we're probably not saving much electricity.
It's currently 95°F/35°C with a feels like with humidity temperature of 117°F/47°C.

Yeah, she used this daily drinking tea. I have her tea pot too.
It's a very interesting color and why I have it. It's very delicate yet sturdy at the same time. No one really wanted her glassware so I took a few boxes.

I went digging in the basement looking at antiques this morning. Someone at work was talking about uranium glass. I'm pretty sure I have a decanter set from my grandma's house made from uranium glass. So far I've found a couple cadmium glass examples and her old Fire King ovenware Anchor Hocking tea cup, but no uranium glass. I've only gone through a few boxes but it's time to inspect the bees I'm putting it away for now.

Anyone in my area (St Louis, MO) in need of a friendly cat? This guy followed our daughter to the front door last night. I posted his info and have searched missing cats but haven't had any luck. I'll let the post stay up for a few days but I know how these things go. He's been living under cars as that's where he went last night.
We already have 4 cats or I'd gladly give him a home. I'm not sure we'd be the right environment at this point.

We ended up with an extra grape vine. One that we thought died came out of dormancy way late and now I need somewhere to put the other. Melissa and I can't agree on where to put it. We rarely disagree on much but this is proving to be a tougher decision between us. Our city lot is jam packed already. Silly as it sounds, this bonus grape vine is causing unnecessary friction.
Hopefully we agree on something soon or I'm giving it away.

The blue hive has a little beard tonight. 🐝🐝🐝 The population is at a peak, probably 40,000 - 50,000 bees, maybe more. I'm adding another super tomorrow, the basswood and mimosa trees are in full bloom and the girls are hitting them hard.
The yellow is still struggling but we're hoping another new queen of the specific Carniolan stock they are might help. Time will tell.

Hello everyone. 👋🏼 How's it going? We're leaving for the Wisconsin Dells in 10 days and I get more anxious the closer it gets. I'm probably one of the rare few who hate going on vacation. Taking of work is great but I do not like traveling. Flying is not happening, I don't like it, so I drive. Driving is fine but I hate leaving my house, and our animals. I grew up on a farm, you didn't really take off on vacation. It's just not my thing.
I go because it's expected.

We will be harvesting a box of honey this weekend. The hive that made it has stung and attacked me repeatedly. They're productive though. Reminds me of myself a bit, I'm abrasive but get the job done.

We had a security meeting at work and all had to set up 2 factor authentication. Brenda, our oldest CSR asked what that was. Our tech guy said don't worry about it, your phone doesn't support it. I'm assuming flip phone as old ass android support the Google authenticator app.

Yeah, she's in a cage, not really visible with the bees all over. They will eat the candy plug on the one end to release her in 2-3 days.
About 99% of the bees are workers. All of our bees are mix of bright yellow and more black than yellow. The mixed genetics gives off different color patterns.

I had a longer queen install video to share but it was too big for Mastodon. It's only 42 seconds but high quality video takes up too much space. Then I remembered I have a PeerTube channel so I posted it there. At 00:31 in the video you can see a bee cleaning the cage with it's proboscis or tongue.

I harvested black raspberries this evening, 3rd bowl today. That little patch of ours is really producing this year. Melissa has half a gallon frozen already and eats some fresh most days in her oatmeal. Hopefully the rest is as successful.

Hello everyone! How are ya? I'm off work for four day so it's pretty good here. I met with a new GP today and it didn't go great. They asked how many cups of coffee I drank daily, I asked what constitutes a cup. They said 5-6 ounces, so I said 8-12 cups. The doctor audibly gasped and said that's too much. I chuckled and said unless you're writing medicinal cocaine prescriptions, it's not soon to change. Not sure how we'll get along...

Hello everyone. How's it going? I'm alive and feeling better. My recent illness progressed a bit further than I'd have like and slowed me down considerably. I never miss work so I felt dead tired a few days and passed out early most evenings. Besides that things are pretty good, the garden is blooming and the bees are buzzing. This little sunflower opened today and caught my eye. I might enjoy the flowers as much as the food. 🌻🍓

We're having our annual insurance meeting at work. The rumors running around have me leaning towards cancelling our coverage. The cost to benefit ratio is skewed too far in the insurance companies favor. Coverage is also being reduced again. We're going to meet with a direct primary care physician and look into catastrophic coverage. Missouri is apparently having 23-28% premium increases commonly. All I can say is FUCK THAT!

Good morning Mastodon. Hope you're all doing well! I've been running myself ragged the last few days and realized this morning I need to stop. The OCD is getting the better of me and I should have caught it sooner. Melissa tried to gently let me know but knows not to flat out confront me over it.
We bought a swarm box last night, a Swarm Trooper. It's a nice setup and included a cool sticker. I'm going to put it in a tree after work.

My Frankenstein swarm trap might have a swarm in it, but a tornado producing storm cell is about 10 minutes out. So I threw a ratchet strap over it to the shed roof and I'm crossing my fingers. I'm not sure there is but Melissa observed 50+ bees around it so I'm securing it.

They have not moved in yet, but they are showing a bunch of interest this morning as they did last night. They got there late in the evening and I think they just hunker down for the night, it stayed around 60F so it wasn't that cold.
It's my first swarm but yeah I thought it looked kind of big too. Hopefully it fits in my box.

First time in the face for me, a Carniolan responsible. It hurt but the swelling went down fast. Two of the southern banded Italian hybrids got me and I still have knots on that arm. I put on my hood and gloves for the nuc opening but was skipped the jacket. Probably not the smartest move.

There are no queen cells and they have empty frames to fill in there. That is a nuc installed today that was crowded in a pro nuc box. Another brood box will go on next week. Most of the ones on the back were tapped out of the nuc box.

Yep pretty much anyone can tend bees. You just have to find a supplier selling hives and bees to get started. I bought everything local but supplies can be bought online too.

The nucs are installed. I'd hoped to get good video of it but my camera woman had court today and the supplier said I definitely shouldn't wait to install these, they were boiling over. So heavy and full of bees! The Carniolans in the blue hive are about a week behind the hybrid Italians in the yellow in terms of numbers. They'll get there though. I'm hoping to piece together some footage for my security camera to make a PeerTube video.

My old fashioned French lilac got dropped off today. I'm excited to plant it tomorrow. I didn't realize it but this lilac is coming from shoots my friend's aunt got from grandma's lilac bush over 35 years ago. It was a sentimental moment when he explained that to me. My grandmother gave plants to everyone. It was originally planted in the 1940s so it's awesome to keep it going a bit longer myself.

I found out at work today a few people are actively avoiding me. I inquired as to how I got so lucky and how do I get more people to participate? 😄 This was from a friend who also cringes when I'm walking across the parking lot. If I'm out there, something is wrong.
I'm off work tomorrow which is great! Guess I'll cut down another tree. Last one on my list. Next Friday I get our bees.

Hello everyone! How's it going? It meh here, a sign of the times. I had to get the lawn mower out for the first time this year. I'm glad we invested in the Ego electric mower a couple of years ago. It makes cutting the grass so much easier. No oil, no gas and no engine noise. Friday I'll be getting the wood chipper out, it has all three but will chip a 4 inch branch, so I'll cut it some slack. 😉

The bare root plants we ordered from the Missouri Conservation Dept are starting to put on green. The pictures below are just 4 of the 18 we planted but all are coming out of dormancy. So that turned out to be a good deal.
Below are an elderberry, hazelnut, blackberry, and wild plum.

I looked into a grey water collection system but the wife didn't want to deal with the legalities so we went with rain barrels.
She's very law abiding because of her law license where I'd be inclined to build myself a house without a permit.

I built cheap rain barrels out of trashcans. Put hose nozzles on them and tapped my gutters to fill them.
Melissa wants to buy a nicer looking one for the driveway.

I started cutting down a tree 40-50ft tall and about 14 inches in diameter at 8am this morning. Took two drink breaks during. Now I'm getting out of the shower. Not too bad for a middle aged, out of shape, man with a come along. My saw is in desperate need of a file. All the wood and brush is stacked in piles of stuff I can wood chip, and logs I can bury in my ground to improve the soil. A productive day.

Hello Mastodon! How was everyone's day? Ours was good. We worked in the backyard half a day and went to a movie. At this point we're all set up for spring planting next month. I also made another video for my PeerTube channel. Nothing fancy, just a look at a part of our urban backyard garden setup.

Hello everyone! I was able to drag my butt back out there and assemble that raised bed and trellis. We had to run back out for more dirt, we didn't have enough. I have a few more things to add but overall I'm happy with it. Excuse the backyard mess, we jammed plants everywhere.

Two raccoons fighting in a tree while s third tries to drag the aggressive one off while a fourth one watches. This is all happening at 30-40 feet in the air on thin branches.
I got the aggressive one and the other two down with a spot light. I'll go out in an hour and check on the stuck one. I can't reach it but still feel responsible.

Hello everyone, happy DST day if you suffer under it! We've been busy today. After 3 hours of fence building and planting in the back this morning the girls took me out for birthday lunch at the new Pink Margarita Mexican restaurant by our house. It was pretty good and they offered some interesting fusion options with other cultures. Then I transplanted the succulents I got yesterday for $2 a piece into these pots I got for $0.46 a piece. Great deals.

Mr Minx got weighed and x-rayed today, he's currently 19.2 pounds. Nothing is wrong, just a standard check up but because of his Manx syndrome we've opted for X-rays every few years just to check his spine and joints. All in great shape considering he's a rumpy riser with no tail, a more pronounced case. I asked if his weight was an issue but the vet said his bones are denser than usual and he's very muscular, which we laughed at. 😂 He's not fat, just big boned!

I don't think so, there hasn't been a ton of testing. Most studies I found were done around anxiety. Fireworks and other stressful situations for dogs. Apparently the dementia in dogs centers around being anxious or restless so it helps with those aspects.
He still stares off into space outside to the point you have to walk out and tap his back. Melissa thinks he's going deaf but I don't believe he is. Small sounds still trigger him.

We tried a couple prescriptions and nothing worked. The CBD does help a lot but I was hesitant until the vet said it wouldn't hurt him, so why not.
Rubbing medicine in a cats ear could get interesting, it's nice he's cooperating.

Good evening everybody! How's it going? Today we disassembled a 24ft trampoline. I'm going to use the two halves of the metal ring to construct a greenhouse with a few other pieces. Hopefully about 8ft x 12ft x 6ft tall. We're constantly trying to improve and expand or garden opportunities.
