What is time of use and why is it so much cheaper?
My energy plan grants me 6 cents per kilowatt hour for 6 hours per night. This is more than enough time to keep my car charged. I charge once per week. But I could charge every night if I wanted to. And since I charge only once a week, realistically, I could "downgrade" to level 1 charging without issue.
I don't need a special circuit. Most people don't.
"Fast" chargers like Electrify America, Ionna, Tesla, etc. tend to be 40 cents or higher. This makes "fueling" your EV about like fueling a sports car.
Though, I did that math before all of the current bullshit. Public fast charging might be more economical now.
But if you can charge at home, it can be way cheaper.
Yeah, it's slow. But while you're sitting on your ass in front of your TV, your car could be charging. While you're honk shooing at night, your car could be charging.
You don't need a time of use energy plan, but it certainly helps.

Tomorrow will be another day of a decent amount of driving.
One of the reasons I do this is because I'm the only person in my family with an EV and gas prices are stupid. Thanks to time of use energy at home, using my car is cheap.
It's always been cheaper than gas, but my energy cost hasn't changed through all this bullshit.
Even if you think "green" shit is bullshit, saving money should be a massive motivator.

I have harsh opinions on ear cropping. I don't buy the excuses about hearing better. It's purely aesthetic. And this is made abundantly clear in the mutilation requirements by the AKC.
Tail docking can be valid. Happy tail syndrome is a real problem. It was one of my worries with my greyhounds, who had long tails. Leeloo was, especially, a concern. But docking for the aesthetics to meet some stupid breed standard? Fuck that.

The other day I saw a whole doberman at the park I tend to go for walks. It was so fun to see him with his owner.
What do I mean by "whole"?
Not cropped. Not docked. Not the AKC standard for dobermans.

When I adopted Benson, he didn't know much about being a pet dog even though he was nearly 8 years old. He had a rough start in life.
I lived in an apartment which had a fully secured private dog park. It wasn't very big, but every dog that came were residents, so there were frequent visitors.
He met Moose as a puppy. Benson was 8 years old, Moose was 8 weeks. Moose looked up to him so much, but Benson really didn't want anything to do with him.
Over time, though, they bonded. They became such close friends. They became excited to see each other at the dog park.
Moose helped Benson learn fun and friendship.
It was dangerous in the dog park when they decided to chase, though. Moose, being a great dane, meant there was close to 200lbs of dog running full speed in such a small space. Despite Benson being smaller, he's the one that was once responsible for knocking someone down!
Moose moved away with his family, which left Benson a bit depressed. This is what lead to me finding Leeloo to keep him company.
Great danes don't have long lifespans. Shortly after Benson's passing, Moose also passed. I still keep in contact with his family.

It was rare for Benson to ask me for anything. But, from the very first day, whenever he wanted something, he'd come up to me, and usually just look at me until I figure out what he wanted. Sometimes, if I took too long to figure it out, he'd just start licking my leg.

Flock run an old version of Android with numerous known vulnerabilities. They run their app in debug mode, which makes it easy to influence their behavior. They store images without any known expiration, with some storing images captured right after manufacture. Physical access means you can literally take control over it. Communication and capture is insecure.

I use an app called Cronometer to estimate my meal carbs so I can determine my insulin dose. It's a pretty solid system for my diabetes management as their library of food and their nutritional value is vast.
In our diabetes support community, we strongly discourage using LLMs to make medical decisions. And here's why:
An LLM just told me my meal was nearly twice as many grams of carbs as Cronometer indicated. This is a meal I have saved in Cronometer so I've dosed for it using its information in the past and trust it.
Had I dosed for the carbs the LLM gave me, I would have overdosed on insulin.
This is why we say don't use AI to make medical decisions. They have no problem trying to kill you.

Apparently various dog breeds bred with corgis become corgi versions of those dog breeds.
Corgis, being known for their short stature, have even crossed with greyhounds, where every dimension of their being is stretched. I've seen a couple of examples of extra long, but still short legged, corgis!

Leeloo gets excited for walk time. She jumps and bounces around me (she's good about not jumping on people).
This evening, she slipped and did the splits with her back legs.
If you know much about greyhounds, you probably flinched a bit.
Their hind quarters aren't built for this.
She slowly got up and hobbled to her nearby bed. I stopped her before she laid down so I could work her back legs a bit.
To her, after all, I have the healing touch.
She regained her excitement for her walk, but carefully did her bouncing.
She's now walked, had her evening meds, and her cookies and cheese.

The T1000E is really good. It's what I carry for Meshcore. I've gotten over a mile of range in an urban environment with it.
My only problem is I think Meshcore needs more tweaks on this one. It has a different LoRa radio than everything else, basically. I have to reboot mine every now and then, else communication gets a bit spotty. But once rebooted, it's reliable for at least a few days.

In a support community I'm in, we strongly discourage getting medical advice from LLMs, and many members of the community will shut down such discussions. And this is among the reasons why. We've seen so much harmful information come out of LLMs when it comes to medical topics. "Harmful" may be downplaying a bit some of the advice that can be seen with diabetic management, in our case.

The question I got when a NP at my endocrinologist's office noticed me wearing a mask was "Would you feel more comfortable if I also wore a mask?"
To me, even that question is bad.
I was the only person in the entire office, be it patients or staff, wearing a mask. I live pretty deep in anti-mask territory so it's not surprising anymore.
At least my primary care doc is good about masking.

Reticulum isn’t really a competitor to Meshtastic. There’s, certainly, an app that could compete with Meshtastic on the Reticulum network protocol, but it’s actually app agnostic. It might be worth putting up a stationary RNode module.
I’m still learning how all this works together. It’s, certainly, keeping me entertained for now.

From what I understand, Meshcore was created by a company that makes mesh devices who wasn’t happy with Meshtastic, so they made their own. I’m not sure if they even tried to contribute to Meshtastic to improve it or just wanted to do their own half open half proprietary thing to make money off of it.

I’ve been messing a bit with Meshcore, a competitor to Meshtastic.
I’m not replacing my stationary Meshtastic node.
I had considered setting up a Meshcore node alongside it, but I’m second guessing this because, as it turns out, Meshcore is not compltely open source.
I’ve also seen literally zero nodes outside of my 2.
So yeah, not entirely open, and not widely deployed, makes it not super useful and might introduce trust issues.
I think I’ll look at reticulum next.

Reading the complaints about the PoE2 update just launched… it seems the consensus is “wahh I can't feel like a god anymore wiping everything on the screen in an instant’.
One of the major themes of the patch was to introduce actual challenge. If you feel this patch is bad because suddenly it's more difficult to play, they succeeded.
If you don't like it, go play Diablo 4.

Well, I don't have compatible hardware to run RNode, which implements Reticulum on LoRa devices. There's a firmware for Heltec V2 but not V3. Apparently the V3 is planned, but that was mentioned some time ago.
Given Reticulum is carrier agnostic, I can still play with it, just not over LoRa for now.
But having no iOS communication app for this, it, ultimately, kinda excludes me. Meshtastic has its problems, but it's actually usable.

I've been reading about Reticulum, which is a network stack that can run over just about anything, including LoRa.
It’s not compatible with Meshtastic so it's either/or with choosing one to run on a node.
It's kinda interesting. It's intended to allow running any application over the network and it will be securely and privately routed.
Meshtastic and Reticulum aren't really comparable. Meshtastic is more of a messaging application that uses the LoRa radio. Reticulum, by itself, is infrastructure to put applications on.
There are messaging applications that work on Reticulum using Lightweight Extensible Message Format (LXMF). I think these applications can work similar to how Meshtastic works, though I'm not sure if it can do anything like a "default" channel like Meshtastic for just broadcasting messages.
I guess I have another rabbit hole to explore.
There doesn't appear to be any iOS apps for talking to a Reticulum LoRa node, so not sure this is something I'll commit to.
My stationary node will continue to run Meshtastic for now.

So I’ve confirmed with another Heltec V3 module that putting it into ROUTER role is no good.
In any case, I’ve been informed that setting a node to ROUTER may be less desired. So I’ll leave my stationary node in CLIENT role.
It’s ready to deploy, at this point. It has dual 18650 battery backing it up, and will have a solar panel attached.
I’ll mount it up maybe tomorrow.

Apparently it has to do with CCPA’s definition of “selling data” which simply includes data being transferred to any third party for any reason. Because Mozilla uses tools for collecting usage metrics and has some marketing and tracking stuff built in, any third party involved in this would receive this data, and the CCPA considers this “selling data”.
It can apparently be so over-broad that service providers have included this kind of language simply for your data being hosted in their services in a third party provider like Hetzner, AWS, etc.
So it appears to be some potentially over-broad definitions in law.

The difficulties integrating my Nest thermostat with Home Assistant, and keeping it connected longer than a few weeks at a time, is why I gave up my Nest Thermostat.
I switched to Ecobee, but it still requires cloud apparently, and Ecobee started doing really shady things.
I now have a Honeywell Z-Wave thermostat and it’s way better.

Look, language models have their uses. A language model on top of a knowledge model would be fabulous. But knowledge models simply don’t exist.

I was opposed to the whole “TikTok ban” situation. But ByteDance may have proven Congress’s point.
Biden noted he would not enforce the ban and allow the next administration figure it out. ByteDance still turned off their services to Americans, blaming the Biden admin.
And then they turned it back on, thanking Trump.
The congressional mandated ban was already in flux. The shutdown was self-imposed. This was all planned.
Maybe congress actually did have a point.

The enshittification of AI has lead to the choice of AI used by VLC to be groaned at. I even saw a post cross my feed of someone looking for a replacement for VLC.
VLC is working on on-device realtime captioning. This has nothing to do with generating images or video using AI. This has nothing to do with LLMs.
This is not generative AI.
While it would be preferred to use human generated captions for better accuracy, this is not always possible. This means a lot of video media is inaccessible to those with hearing impairment.
What VLC is doing is something that will contribute to accessibility in a big way.
AI transcription is still not perfect. It has its problems. But this is one of those things that we should be hoping to advance.
I'm not looking to replace humans in creating captions. I think we're very far from ever being able to do this correctly without humans. But as I said, there's a ton of video content that simply do not have captions available, human generated or not.
So long as they're not trying to manipulate the transcription using GenAI means, this is the wrong one to demonize.

If you're surprised Tesla takes and keeps recordings from their cars after seeing the news about the Cybertruck in Vegas, you shouldn't be. This is not something new. Tesla has been taking and storing media for many years, claiming it's used to train their AI capabilities. You can't opt out either.
And Tesla employees do access it, make fun of you, make memes, and share the content internally, without any legitimate reason to access the content.

The thing to keep in mind about Large Language Models (LLMs, what people refer to as AI, currently) is even though human knowledge in the form of language is fed into them for their training, they are only storing statistical models of language, not the actual human knowledge. Their responses are constructed from statistical analysis of context of prior language used.
Any appearance of knowledge is pure coincidence. Even on the most “advanced” models.
Language is how we convey knowledge, not the knowledge itself. This is why a language model can never actually know anything.
And this is why they’re so easy to manipulate into conveying objectively false information, in some cases, maliciously so. ChatGPT and all the other big vendors do manipulate their models, and yes, in part, with malice.

So the way it works on the backend is the account gets flagged and each report gets added to that account. The admin sees reported accounts rather than individual reports. It doesn’t really create extra work to add on to this. If anything, it adds credibility to other reports.
So by all means report them, but also block them.

Ugh, Home Assistant updates broke on me. I don't use https. HA is available on my internal network and via tailscale, not publicly. Yeah, still probably not great, but that's not the point.
The companion app insists it requires https, even when http is used for the URL.

I saw a rumor that there are Trump voters posting on social media they are learning Obamacare is the ACA, many of them have pre-existing conditions, and many know someone, such as friends or relatives, that were only able to get their massively expensive care through the ACA.

The US has an almost (emphasis on almost) universal price cap on insulin out of fear of further regulation. For those not on medicare or medicaid, it comes in the form of a generous coupon from the manufacturers that insurers and PBMs use in collusion.
That fear of regulation is now shattered.
My last order of insulin was billed over $2200 for 3 month supply, which I only paid $75 for.
A few of my meds are through these coupons and cost over $1000 per month.
I suspect this is going to get very messy.

My robot vacuum is having a bad time apparently. On its return trip to the charging dock, it was almost there, then turned around and went to the kitchen, where it is now lost.
At least the robot uprising shouldn’t be an issue yet.

Hi, I'm Beau. I have 2 greyhounds named Benson and Leeloo. They're pretty chill dogs. Both are seniors, but one barely so. Don't tell her, she doesn't know yet.
I have Type 2 Diabetes. I've heard all the "cures" so don't bother with it. I am insulin using due to low insulin production. I use tech to help manage this. I'm also a mod in an online diabetes community.
I'm on the aroace spectrum. I am not, strictly, aroace. If you want to know more, feel free to ask.
I'm into technology, particularly data. Which is why I'm a database administrator by career. I also enjoy OpenSource stuff and run a HomeLab. I'm not going to just tell you to switch to Linux though.
I'm staunchly pro-vax. I also mask as much as I reasonably can in public. To date, I have not had symptoms of COVID-19 nor have I tested positive.
I'm American, currently living in Texas. I’m hoping to not be in Texas anymore at some point.
