I had previously had surgery on the other side for a torn labrum. For that shoulder I did 6 months of rehab before surgery and it was all just wasted time.
The pain this time was so sharp and stabby that there was just no way that rehab was going to make any kind of a difference.
The surgeon's default course of action was physical therapy, but I explained the same thing to him and he just kind of nodded and said, "yeah, it does feel like we're going to end up at surgery anyway." So it didn't take much convincing.

Over about four days she steadily got her conscious mind back. Lots of eye contact, happy tail, fully interacting with us, regained bladder control (👀), holding toys in her mouth, and just being her loving, joyous self again.

I was desperately hoping for this. When she was in mindless robot dog mode, it was horrible to think that the real Kuma might be lost to us forever.
It's just a momentary reprieve but at least we have her truly back for at least a little while. Getting the chance to really appreciate her is such a gift. Every moment beyond this point is a bonus win.

Her very positive response to the prednisone has given the neurologist and radiation therapist enough optimism that we all agree it makes sense to go ahead with radiation therapy.
A directed beam zaps the tumor and hopefully kills a big chunk of it to buy her more time. Successful treatment yields prognosis estimates from 6-18mo to 18-24mo (depends on the tumor type, which we don't actually know).
But it can't get all of the tumor so eventually it re-establishes itself.
It's NOT a cure but getting that much extra time with her would be the best possible outcome given the bad cards we've been dealt.

Next steps: Another expensive MRI+CT scan next week to plan for the even more expensive radiation therapy (so far her pet insurance is coming through for us. 🤞). Then it's 10 anesthesia+radiation zap sessions over 2.5wks.
Success obv isn't guaranteed. We'll have a sense if it was effective about 8wks later. But unfortunately many dogs succumb to their tumors before that point is reached; time just runs out on them. But we're happy to give her that fighting chance.

Incredible, wonderful organization that's dedicated to helping families whose pets have cancer. Very niche and, yes, there are certainly bigger tragedies out there, but their warmth right now is an incredible boon.
They're also facilitating some local experiences for us (doggy photo shoot; an indoor pool just for dogs! etc).

The internet says freekeh is "smoky" flavored. Maybe. Someone else described it as more like wet hay. That seems closer to me.

Sourdough sounds like too much of a commitment / rabbit hole for me right now, but def hope to level up to it at some point!
It does seem absurd now that anyone would buy industrially produced bread. Local bakery, sure. Also maybe during the summer to avoid heating up the kitchen. But homemade bread just seems like such an easy, satisfying win.

What do the anti-seed oil folks think about algae cooking oil?
I've been using avocado oil + cast iron for years. Started reading up on oxidation in olive oil (tldr: basically hopeless if you buy it at a grocery store) and apparently avocado oil can / does(?) have similar issues.
This stuff claims to have more oxidative stability (when heated; dunno at rest) and the aluminum bottle is better than the typical plastic or glass.

First attempt at making a #keto #bread!
Flax, almond flour, eggs, bit of greek yogurt, olive oil.

Trying to refine my approach to keto: reduce my saturated fat intake and lower my cholesterol levels (yes, I read Lopp's article and yes I got the advanced lipid panel test). Incorporating flax seeds seems like an easy win.

Tastes mostly neutral, but finishes as salty olive oil. Not bad, but not great.
I've been putting slices in the toaster to crisp up the mushier inside. That def improves the experience.
Spreading some butter on was a bad call; accentuated the saltiness in a bad way.
Tried it with some pesto; if you have a pesto you really like, it could work great. My pesto was so-so, so meh.
Biggest success: dip it into a tikka masala sauce!

I didn't read up on my local code, but the general reddit wisdom was that:
* Corp building installs have diff requirements than homes.
* And then even within homes, it's a question of how long the run is. Somewhere around 50-100' is usually short enough that there are no regs. Plus minimal concern about jacket off gassing in the vents for such short runs.

Whew... I've been quiet the last few weeks because I've been BUSY with my other passion project: coaching -- and helping to RUN -- high school boys gymnastics.
Y'all out on social media don't have much visibility into this side of my life. High school gymnastics MADE ME WHO I AM. I love being a coach now and trying to offer a similar experience to a new generation of kids. And this year demanded more of me than ever.
Please read on to understand why I'm so fucking proud of what my small gymnastics community accomplished.

Last year the state dropped Boys Gymnastics as a high school Varsity sport. So coaches across the state took it upon ourselves to start our own league. I was part of the 9-member Steering Committee that made this season happen.
We spent MONTHS working out our own process for training and certifying our judges, organizing Sectional meets, and running our own STATE MEET.
AND WE SUCCEEDED!!! We ran a full season that concluded this past Saturday with 142 gymnasts from 33 different schools competing in our State Meet!

The meet ran smoothly, the gym was packed (by our standards; this isn't TX football...), and the kids had the high energy, high stakes State Meet they deserved.

I volunteered to create and run the scoring for the meet. Had to write 5000+ lines of code, work out all the coordination logistics, do all the ENDLESS data dumps and filtering along the way to figure out who qualified and how to slot them into the meet, train the workers, brief all the coaches and judges, and -- most importantly -- oversee and troubleshoot the entire process during the meet.

It was STRESSFUL. My code drove our leaderboard displays as well as provided live web-based results. I'd take quick glances up at the display board and pray it wouldn't be showing an http 404 or 500 error.

The State Meet was in my hands, on my shoulders. If I fucked up, the meet would be a disaster. Thankfully there were NO problems. Coaches were AMAZED at how well everything ran.
We had to figure out EVERY aspect of this meet. Managing who qualifies, who pays for what, selecting officials, how does the host school break even or possibly profit, all the day-of logistics, designing and ordering the trophies and medals, even produce the freakin' meet decorations, signage, and souvenir program!

ENORMOUS amount of work. But at the end of the day, we ran a PHENOMENAL, professional State Meet.

In addition to all that, I had OTHER responsibilities in the closing weeks of the season.
COACHING:
Our team fought and scraped our way to earn a TOP TEN berth to the State Meet! We also had 11 individual event qualifiers, the most of any school in the state. I strategize and optimize our routines for our rulebook and I'm the technician in the gym who refines the most subtle / difficult aspects of our key skills. Unfortunately I couldn't be with our team during the meet since I was so busy running the scoring.

JUDGING:
I judged 2 of the 4 Sectionals meets (head high bar judge!) which determine who qualifies to State. Plus a ton of dual meets throughout the season, Varsity invites, and culminating Varsity Conference meets. I'm usually voted by the coaches to be one of the top 12 judges in the state and therefore asked to judge the State Meet, but obviously had to decline this year in order to focus on my other duties.

I'm on our Rules Committee which is just starting to gear up to review and revise our rules for next season. And volunteered to remain on the Steering Committee to do it all again in 2025.

"Very" heavy? Maybe once you get into the all-metal frames, but for the polymer guns I can't say that I remember any significant difference that affected my shooting (though since I'm still a beginner, it's not like I have great precision in the first place).
I shot a S&W M&P M2.0 full size (4.5"? 5"?), CZ P-10 C, and Walther PDP Compact 4" during my first day of testing.
I had the best accuracy with the full size M&P, but I assumed that had more to do with the barrel length (all three were iron sights, no red dots).

I think in theory, but there are a bunch of unknowns:
* Can the PC's drive read the Dolby Vision data? If the gaming consoles' hardware can't read that data, stands to reason that other lasers will have the same limitation (I have no clue what the hardware issue is, though).
* Can the PC's drive read that third layer?
* Will the PC's playback software + hdmi hardware successfully complete the Dolby Vision hdmi handshake? hdmi sounds like a total nightmare communication tech.

The better quality (thicker, fresher) steak plus the reverse-sear technique made for a killer upgrade combo (duh! But still... wow).
I had been buying prepackaged 1" steaks and freezing them. This time it was a ~1.5" thick ribeye directly from the meat counter (but tradeoff: those aren't grass fed).
Previous attempts were all on just cast iron or backyard grill. First time reverse-searing. 200° to an internal temp target of 120°.
Had not incorporated finishing with butter much before, first time using thyme. Garlic in there, too.
My steaks had been fairly dry (even when not overcooked), unpleasantly tough, and mostly weirdly flavorless. This one was incredibly juicy, tender, so much flavor!
The difference was like spending $6 at Denny's vs $80 at a steakhouse. NO JOKE.
I have one prepackaged 1" steak left in the freezer; will try reverse-searing it and see how much the cooking technique alone can improve upon my prior results. I expect disappointment, but worth running the experiment!

So before #100aDayUntil100k was a thing, I was trying to do 50 #pushups per day, but kept failing just due to time management throughout the day (and, no, couldn't just pump out 50 all at once before bed).
So instead I've been aiming for 1 set of 10 every hour that I'm awake (so, ideally, ~160/day). Gets me up from my computer and gets the blood pumping more often.
REALLY enjoying this approach, even if I miss a few hours.

The biggest hurdle with Atmos (aside from the addiction of adding more and more speakers) is the receiver/amp situation.
7.x (non-Atmos) receivers are ubiquitous ("x" can be anywhere from 1 sub to 4, but that doesn't matter here).
But if they have Atmos onboard, then can switch between:
7.x vs 5.x.2
(the ceiling ".2" speakers need to be amplified, so they eat up two of the 7 channels).
So a 7-channel Atmos receiver is really your minimum.
If you want 5.x.4, you need a 9-channel amp. Starting to get more expensive.
But the full Atmos spec supports 7.x.y ("y" = in theory I think you can go insane to like 30 ceiling speakers).
If you want 7.x.4, that's 11 total channels. Only a few really high-end receivers provide that many amped channels. Megabucks.
BUT the clever workaround is that there are 7- and 9-channel receivers that offer you the line-level (not amplified) audio out for the missing channels, you just have to pipe that to a separate amp.
And in my case, my separate amp is the GOOD AMP. So even though my receiver can amplify 9 channels(?), I'm only using 6 of them and instead I have my good amp doing the most important work:
Proceed AMP5: L, R, C, side L, side R
Receiver: rear L, rear R, top front L, top front R, top rear L, top rear R

Really strange:
I have the correct screen now and it works fine. But since it came with the same breakout cable, I tried manually wiring the screen to the Pico and am getting the same garbled results!
I've quadruple checked the gpio pins and the breakout cable labels.
My only guess now is that the pinout labels for the breakout cable are wrong.

Yes, it's the equivalent of Bitcoin Core for the Liquid world, but I don't think the second part is true for either Core or Elements ("only useful to...").
I would assume it has an integrated wallet, just like Core, but I really haven't dug around much. Still waiting for IBD to finish. 50% of the way there.
My main use case was to find a better way to do a Liquid cold wallet with Jade or Specter DIY. Green doesn't give me what I want.
But Specter Desktop dropped their Liquid integration, so now I'm not sure what options are even out there.

I think you're misunderstanding what @npub1r7p…nspg is arguing for.
When he says "hunt for used equipment" he just means an old laptop or a miniPC.
Most plebs mistakenly think "bitcoin node" = Raspberry Pi.
But the point is that even an older used computer is still way more powerful and WAY more reliable than a Raspi. It's a much better starting point for spinning up your own node.
So Dimi is saying: "Yeah, I sell refurbished used computers that are set up to be awesome bitcoin nodes OR you can absolutely do all that yourself."
Just don't do it on a Raspberry Pi!

Cast iron pan skills getting pretty solid!
* Dry brine for a few hours at room temp on a wire rack, skin side up
* Let the pan get hot, add a bit of avocado oil
* Dab a little oil on the skin side
* Start it skin side down
The dry brining helps a ton! Pulls the moisture away from the exterior surfaces. Previously the skin would always stick and pull away. Now it's beautifully sliding in the pan as if it were an ice rink!

I'm no expert, but I'd guess almost certainly just you. There are highly connected LN nodes that have channels with tons and tons of people. Some of those connections are to other big nodes in the network. Now they can interconnect lots more people (e.g. you to Blixt, Blixt to Phoenix, Phoenix to Alice).
But you're just a leaf node on that graph (graph theory terminology; there are main trunks, branches, and at the very edges: leaves). Once you get to a leaf there's nowhere left to go. It's a dead end. So then there's no way for someone to try to route a transaction through you.
If you used the same wallet to open more channels, then you'd start to integrate yourself as a small web of routing options for others to possibly use (though, in reality, if you're in a mobile app, that ain't happening. Complex reasons, but basically if you really want to participate in routing payments for the network, you have to run your own bitcoin + LN node at home that's connected 24/7).
