Yes, on the one hand I appreciate the pacing. In a way, that's part of its uniqueness. But so much of those calm, slower moments are carried by the two puppet leads. And there's just not enough "there" there. Certainly not by modern standards.
We've crossed the pacing chasm; I'd never try to have my nieces watch 2001 with me, either. That demands SO MUCH f'n patience. Kubrick's pacing in general (even THE SHINING) is just of an era where I'm the youth with the too-short attention span. So forget actual kids today giving it a try.
Michael Bay was a "ha-ha, you all have ADHD after watching my movie" early innovator. There's no going back.
