....on a slight tangent, this SM trend seems to mirror the Palestine Action protests, where those protesting (and being arrested) were predominantly pensioners who didn't have to worry about losing their livelihoods as a result of being identified or arrested during protests.
Are we now going to see pensioners lead the social media commentary on contentious issues that working people are too scared to interact with?

The numbers of lurkers on SM have always been pretty high, but I wonder how much of this latest shift relates to 'age' (ID) verification, doxxing or police involvement following contentious social media activity?
I'd genuinely like to think that ppl have decided that US Corporate SM is evil and manipulative and refuse to participate, but it seemsmore likely that people are now worried that posting on SM might have repercussions.

I'm not sure anyone thought that an aerial war alone would force regime change, but it's notable that while the US is sending ground troops to the Middle East, Israel is reporting that the IDF is stretched beyond capacity.
If the US commits to an long and ugly ground war in Iran while Israel concentrates on using its army to grow its own borders in Lebanon then people in the USA are going to get very vocal very quickly.

The West as a whole is long-overdue a public debate on the incestuous relationship between politics and finance and the degree to which our democratic choices can be compromised by embedded financial systems.
Other ways of working are clearly possible, if not necessarily easy to navigate, but too many politicians have spent too long accepting the TINA mantra and claiming to be grownups for supporting a broken status quo.

I suppose it's arguable in that sense that the Normans established a hierarchical gangster state in 1066, and the Americans established a successor in the US in the 18th century. If corruption is allowed to continue over the course of centuries then it becomes Established tradition by default.
The only time that western democracy has worked for all westerners was during the post-ww2 period when communism presented an existential threat to the established hierarchy.

I suspect that there's a lot more public climate concern than Western political leaders and media typically present, and if global geopolitics develops into a polar choice between clean energy and fossil fuels then the US could very easily be caught on the wrong side of history.
Some might say that it would be an apt end of a US empire waging war on the back of 3000 year old man-made 'prophesies'.

Some of the rhetoric from the US suggests a grudging acceptance that they've already lost their economic and technical hegemony to China on too many fronts to seriously compete *unless* they use force to quickly co-opt equivalent resources and supply chains to match what China's built over the past couple of decades.
That Trump is threatening long-term allies and talking about how the US 'needs' to own Greenland, Canada, Cuba, Venezuela, .... all makes sense in this respect.

The question for the UK is the independence of the nuclear deterrent, the extortionate cost and the dependency on the US, both in terms of paying for their systems and agreeing to host US armaments on UK territory which makes the UK an automatic target in any war.
An interesting perspective on this is whether any adversary would actually believe that the UK didn't have nuclear weapons even if we announced that we didn't, because the capability will always be there.

Labour's sensible centrists have already tied themselves in knots in trying to convince themselves and others that Corbyn's tenure (massive membership, huge turnouts, massive Labour votes) was a 'disaster', while Starmer (low turnout, way fewer votes than Corbyn, RefUK splitting the Tory vote) delivered a 'historic landslide' .
This will tip them over the edge.

A post-American internet built on FOSS and secure open standards is a wonderful end state, but it's surprising that countries haven't (yet) worked on limiting their exposure to predatory US tech by adopting existing and scalable solutions from China.
There's a sanctions problem obviously, and I'm sure that the predatory issues can be applied to Chinese tech too, but as a shorter-term mitigation to US tech monopoly it's still an option.

This could be anecdotal, but outside of the traditional middle-class professions (doctor, lawyer, banker etc) there seems to have been a decline in the value of Chartered and professional membership institutions in favour of commercial certification schemes that require regular, paid-for re-certification.

Not really. The Green Party in the UK has a no Whip policy because political Whipping is undemocratic, but bribery and blackmail have been embedded in Western society for centuries and unwinding it all would take a revolution.
All kinds of (usually-exclusive) institutions from private schools and Freemasons to crime syndicates and private member clubs can be vehicles for secrecy, corruption and nepotism.

Yes, but it's reasonable to assume that those Committee members are also experts to some degree in the subject areas of those Committees, which means that there would be plenty of entirely legitimate and complimentary roles that they could perform alongside being an MEP (the article's paywalled so can't check the details, sorry).
Either way, it would be interesting to see a similar report for the cabal of careerists, nepotists and general carpet baggers in Westminster.

From what I understand, the current model is semi-free market in the sense that the govt underwrites the loans that are then owned by a private student loans company with the job of managing repayments, which in turn are based on how much graduates earn alongside other tax considerations....which is kinda quite like a graduate tax by another name.

Any country that is serious about nurturing the best talent nationally would not charge for higher education and neither would it leave higher education to market forces.
The former would discourage the most capable from pursuing higher qualifications, while encouraging a class of 'nice-but-dim' graduates based on wealth over ability. The latter would drive chronic short-termism resulting in a dearth of qualified people in certain subject areas an a lack of educational balance.

Agree in part, but I think it's more complicated in practice because although the Greens have adopted a number of socialist policies and both parties oppose exploitative capitalism, there will always be Greens who won't vote for Corbyn because they're not socialists, and socialists who won't vote Green because of that.
The leadership election should make things clearer....

It's bad enough that the police are arresting peaceful protesters for holding up signs opposing the proscription of a peaceful protest group.
The fact that a large proportion of those who have been arrested were either students or pensioners, who were protesting with a full understanding that the bulk of the population will lose their jobs if they are arrested in a peaceful protest has much darker implications.

Interesting that this requirement is rarely applied evenly across company functions.
Most IT departments have a heavy dependence on remote workers, partly because that was the norm before COVID, but also because there are plenty of alternative work options available to them.
Workers in most firms have a very good case for equivalent working arrangements, and unions could easily solve this problem if enough workers were signed up.

Accepting that it turned into a cash grab with little new investment in social housing while landlords grabbed large chunks of the stock on resale, RtB was arguably one of Thatcher's more socially-oriented policies.
....at least in comparison to the billions given away through the privatisation of publicly owned natural resources and essential services.

In some ways it's even worse than the picture you paint.
In the 60s and 70s people were expecting that our technological achievements would see everyone growing up into a leisure society of part-time work and flying cars!
What we got instead was a life of more people working in made-up jobs for more hours and more years for smaller wages and pensions, while a vanishingly-small number of people accrue more wealth than they could ever hope to spend.

Likely I suspect. I can't remember when I first came across articles talking about which degrees graduates who earned the most money held, but it's been a long time.
Conversely, there's the whole 'you think like a....(chemist, historian, musician, etc)' aspect that gives us depth as a species while being largely ignored.

Access to NHS data is going to be part of this trade deal isn't it?
The most sickening part is that these US health companies genuinely believe that *our* NHS data is being 'wasted' through the lack of monetisation when any apple pie US company would have exploited it for kickbacks already.

I can't disagree because I think that schools should be teaching more of everything, but at a time when schools are stopping the teaching of *real* things (like geology) while teaching *made up* things (like religion and economics) I do wonder whether it's all good.

It's about time, because this has been a problem for years and years in spite of *existing* legislation that calls for sensible pricing.

Agree, altho I'd suggest a *lot* more tax to discourage individual landlords and property companies from hoarding the limited stock.
Either,
1. Home-ownership is the goal and so we discourage all rent-seeking behaviour that prevents home-ownership through the exploitation of scarcity, by taxing landlords to the point at which they can only make a loss from property rentals.
Or,
2. Ending homelessness is the goal and we set about building publicly owned housing.

The NHS urgently needs to ditch Palantir, no matter how much it might gain from electronic patient records. Better actors are available, and Palantir are the absolute worst of companies to be partnering with.
