I decided to check out some other Nostr web clients. Up until now, I had used Primal, NoStrudel and Coracle. Primal was generally my go-to due to its easy-to-read UI and its "enhanced privacy" feature since I don't always use a VPN. However, since I decided to upgrade to Proton Unlimited, I'll be using my VPN a lot more, so I figured it doesn't hurt to check out some others.
So far, my favorite, by far, would be Ditto. The UI and feature set is incredible. It feels, in a lot of ways, like Amethyst in web form, which is massive because I absolutely love Amethyst on my phone.
Definitely looking forward to exploring Ditto some more and maybe check out a few other web clients!

One way or another, this pricing crisis was going to end. It was just a matter of when, not if. China building fabs to manufacture more is actually a positive thing because the existing RAM manufacturers are, for all intents and purposes, a cartel. The best thing to do to fight that cartel is to get more competition into the market, which is why China doing that would be a really good thing in the long run.

The dealbreaker for me is, indeed, the surveillance and social credit system. Not saying we all have it right but a colleague of mine in the security and privacy research space used to live there and had an incident where he was imprisoned without cause because the government claimed he was under suspicion of being a spy. No evidence, they just didn't like that he is Christian and uses security tech.
Two sides to every story, I'm sure, but I do know I would never be able to accept the surveillance and social credit system. It's why I'm so vehemently opposed to digital ID, REAL ID, "age verification" systems, KYC laws and Big Data.
Still, I'd love to visit China sometime, as someone who loves their tea culture and appreciates their history and mythology. I just couldn't live there unless the regime changes.

Something I really appreciate about Nostr vs. other social media experiences is that I actually feel like I get some level of engagement here.
I don't get much on platforms like X because I refuse to be inauthentic and phony, playing the algorithmic game, entering subscription slavery and KYCing to receive payouts.
On Nostr, I don't have to do any of that. I can simply post what's on my mind, have a fun time, and still get a decent amount of organic engagement and occasional payout because of zaps.

You know things are getting bad when even a bug bounty program (which benefits heavily from anonymous cyber professionals) is now mandating ID verification that you have to renew annually.
The really crappy part is that this means bugs will go unspotted, more vulnerabilities will be sold on the dark web, and many who got involved in helping make a more secure internet will now simply no longer contribute.

I can't even afford a hardware wallet for now. Once I actually do get into Bitcoin more than just the ~$10's worth I have from zaps, I might consider otherwise, but when I don't have much wealth stored in it, I don't see a point in buying one.
In the meantime, I'll probably set up Cupcake from Cake Wallet, seeing how I love their standard wallet app. Would be a nice middle ground and if it works, I might just stick with it.

I'd say both goals are well within the range of SpaceX's mission. Not trying to be an Elon simp (I don't like OR dislike the guy) but ultimately, the operations of SpaceX are definitely a multi-faceted mission.
Plus, if we start putting AI data centers into space, then it takes up fewer resources on earth, with less pollution potential. And it's also going to be cheaper to pull that off. Moreover, mining asteroids is actually a pretty smart plan for a corporation to aim for. The only problem it might have is that it might possibly ruin the scarcity aspect of gold, silver and other precious metals... but as far as this community goes, I don't think that that's really something most here are concerned about.

The best thing people can do is to conduct a trifold response:
1. Use the full extent of the civil, democratic process. Contact elected officials, especially over extremely important issues. Cast your votes wisely and pragmatically, rather than a narrow-minded "they didn't do everything I wanted so I'll vote for the more problematic party" (ie. Nick Fuentes claiming he'll vote Democrat in protest). Use the systems the founding fathers gave us. They may not even work half of the time these days but we cannot be held blameless if we refuse to try.
2. Build and use parallel alternatives. Not just Bitcoin, not just Nostr, alternatives for as much as possible. Heck, even the maxi style "no second best" approach to specific tech is detrimental here. For example, Nostr is my home now, but I still have a Mastodon account. I think Nostr is superior in almost every way, but having options is a good thing.
3. Start a family. No, really, the best way to enact long-term change is to get married and have kids. You raise them well and they'll raise their kids well, and the cycle repeats. As that process goes on, more and more influence of wisdom will appear within the civil systems. This is why some historical generations are considered great, while others are not: the ones raised right enact the greatest change and wisest governance.

Fair enough, I'd definitely try Zorin out. They did a lot of work before Windows 10's death to make it one of the smoothest experiences for Windows users. Still might require some level of terminal usage but for what you're using your system for, I'd imagine that'd probably work the best for you!

You could try ZorinOS, it is very friendly to former Windows users but with a less outdated UI than Mint. What was your main reason for not liking Mint?
Aside from Zorin, you could try something like Fedora, as it has various desktop environment options and is at the cutting edge of Linux development.

Never seen Passengers but Interstellar really has it all, IMO. Exceptional writing with one of the greatest plot twists in cinematic history. Cinematography that puts you right in the moment (and also contributed to science). Excellent casting and acting. PHENOMENAL score.

I love what Odysee has done over the years, and I still support it for now, but things aren't looking good when the co-founder leaves because of the way things are going. Julian also says that they're in major financial trouble, which makes things worse.

I still use Odysee but I haven't uploaded anything aside from articles, and I haven't even posted any comments in a while either. As such, for now, I've decided to go back to using LBRY's desktop client. For those who don't know, LBRY was what Odysee was originally built upon but the meddling SEC destroyed the entity behind LBRY in a total farce of a case.
Much of LBRY (as a program and protocol) still exists, however, and you can still use the desktop application fully. It's not a perfect solution, nor is it necessarily going to work long-term, but I see this as an excellent opportunity for someone to fork the original repos and merge it into the Nostr ecosystem somehow, at least to some extent.
I'm far from a skilled developer, so I'm not going to be able to be the one to do it. I'm learning Python (which the SDK is built in) and I have a tiny bit of experience with some C-likes such as JavaScript and C#, so I can't hope to pull it off any time soon, but I hope someone out there can at least fork LBRY and turn it into something now that Odysee appears to be in trouble.

I think you can do both. I think you can rejoice over a force for evil going away while also recognizing that some of those forces are still human and could still be redeemed. The fact that anybody, even the most evil person, would ever spend a literal eternity being destroyed without perishing is a terrifying concept to think about regardless of whether or not that eternal destruction and separation is self-inflicted.
Moreover, one can still find salvation in the final seconds of their life if God wills it. The thing is, we ultimately don't know a person's salvation. Ours is the only one that can be believed in confidently, but I'm certain that Christ has revealed Himself to many on their deathbed.

It's natural to be a little worried about the unknown of death and the process of death, but I feel like believing that there's nothing after death or that there is some sort of evil after death is incredibly lonely and dark to think about.
One of the many reasons why I find the Christian faith so reassuring is the fact that those who are given to salvation are eventually going to be permitted eternal life in fully capable, restored bodies is a beautiful concept. Thinking about all the things that you can do in eternity that you never got to do during temporality is very amazing to think about, and it takes away some of the fear of that unknowable mystery of death.
It's certainly better than imagining nothingness or, worse, an eternity of self-inflicted torment brought on by one's own intentions to defy the designs of a Creator who knows better than we ever could.

Exactly. Every era has bad things going on in the background, but the difference between previous eras and now is that the algorithms on big tech social networks have fed people all the negativity to the point where they become impossibly pessimistic over it. Even the people who aren't on big tech social still get their information. and from sources that benefit from people being cynical and pessimistic.
There are so many beautiful things going on in our world today, but unfortunately, they get overshadowed by people who feel the need to constantly look for the bad and complain about how "cooked" we are.
One can be both observant of the things that need changing while also recognizing that we can't change everything in one lifetime. Instead, we should be appreciating the good things we have in our lives for now. In the meantime, we should be raising our future generations to take care of any issues that we're not able to take care of in our own lifetimes. That's the cyclical nature of societal improvement. We do whatever we can to fix the issues in our time, but then we raise our children to take on as many issues as they can in their own lifetimes, and then they repeat the process for their children... and then their children repeat the process for their own children.

No, it's a traditionalist mindset. We want to get back to the days when men could be men and women could be women. Incels think they have zero responsibility. I don't think that, I just think that feminism is the root of all relational evils. In fact, incels are a result of feminism as well, because they are weak, effeminate men in terms of their ideology.
Put plainly, I want men to get back to being strong leaders within their families and marriages, and I want women to get back to being homemakers who love and appreciate their husbands rather than work against him at every turn. I want men to get back to being noble and strong and I want women to get back to being gentle and caring. I want society to get back to the days when a family voted together and when the husband was the provider rather than the co-provider. I want to get back to the days where you could actually expect some level of elegance and femininity from women, even the ones that you don't know. I'd like to never hear about a woman's period ever again, for that is something that should be left among the privacy of their own personal grooming. I'd like to get back to the days where men didn't have to worry about walking on eggshells within their own families, their jobs, society at large, and could actually get things done instead of having to worry about being shut down and treated like monsters or harlequins for being pragmatic.
Like I said, the root of all modern societal ills and relational ills comes from feminism, which itself is stemming from the first sin. Eve was the first feminist. She thought she knew better than God and her husband. She didn't want to obey either of them, so she decided to take matters into her own hands and listen to the temptation of the serpent which doomed all of humanity. And just so you know that I'm not some incel, Adam was wrong too, because he chose to listen to his wife rather than to God and common sense. They both share equal blame, but for different reasons, just as men and women have their own issues, unique to themselves.
The problem is, we're trying too hard to make men and women the same. We were created differently for a reason.

Spot on. I think the wisest use case is to hold both XMR and BTC. I even think there are genuine use cases for other alt coins (though I agree many of them are trash), and I also support the larger Web3 movement at an ideological level of decentralization and self-sovereignty. I also support diversification of the assets you hold, including precious metals (primarily gold and silver).
Because of that perspective, I get into arguments with the BTC maxis more than I would like and I always come out of those arguments more convinced than ever that they are a cult.

If you commonly distro hop or try out various Linux distros, I highly encourage you to start using torrenting to do so. Why?
- It reduces the strain on the mirrors used to host the distro ISO file
- It decentralizes the acquisition of the distro, placing its distribution into the hands of the community (as it should be)
- It can have faster download speeds than mirror hosts because you're grabbing from many different sources rather than one server that could be bogged down
- Seeding the distro ISO to at least the 1.0 ratio after downloading ensures that you're contributing to a large network of peers so that if there were a crackdown on that distro, there's no way to truly eliminate the ability for others to download the distro ISO
People tend to only think of torrenting as a means of piracy but that does the technology a disservice. In reality, it's an incredible way of decentralizing software downloads, which is critical with the way things are going on with tech legislation right now.
Just make sure that you at least check your ISO against the checksum from the distro's site to ensure you got the ISO intact and untampered with.

Representative democracy (republic) works, the problem is that our ancestors were really stupid and ceded too much control to banks and to the federal government. Had they actually thought about the future implications of a stronger federal government, or of blue-blooded bankers gaining political power, we wouldn't be in this mess. Of course, it doesn't help that we've also given so much territory to radical ideologies like feminism. "Just the right to vote" was always a carefully-crafted trap designed to take a seemingly innocuous concept and turn it into one of the cornerstones of western ruin. But that's a different can of worms.
The key is not to eliminate the system of a republic. It's to get back to what made the republic great in the first place.

Cake Wallet offering the option to buy digital gift cards to so many vendors is absolutely insane. It makes it a lot more worthwhile to try to get into Bitcoin/Monero. The fact that I can theoretically buy from a majority of retail and restaurant chains across America using Bitcoin or Monero is nuts.

It really isn't, though. There are plenty of scientists who have estimated the global supply of gold. As for it being an IOU, that's only if you're 'buying' gold that you never see or touch.

Sure, they're different, I wasn't arguing otherwise. I'm just saying that the logic of some BTC maxis makes no sense when it comes to gold.
As for gold's supply, we can't know how much exists in the universe but we do have solid estimates on how much exists on earth. There's a reason it's considered a precious metal: it's rare, scarce.
Sure, if we were a fully spacefaring civilization, then the unlimited supply argument would be one to consider, but we're not there yet.

Are we talking practical limits? If so, the same argument could be made about Bitcoin. In reality, both have limited supply.

I'm far from an economic pro but I'm curious why you think that? It certainly will have an impact but I'm not sure how it will get outright ugly, so I'm genuinely curious as to the reason you believe that.

Yeah, that's the unfortunate part about it, but I used to seem to get decent speeds... or at least, decent enough to be able to use the full privacy mode without image and video enabled. Now I have to keep it only enabled for things like untrusted relays, media uploads, zaps and so forth. In other words, I'm only able to keep it enabled for things that don't require the highest speeds to be functional.

The storage and transportation argument I definitely understand, but the supply is definitely not infinite. This is doubly true while we're still here on earth. The only way we would be able to increase our supply is to go out and among the stars and right now, we are still in the infancy of space travel.

Yep, it is! Combined with the outbox setup on Amethyst, I don't seem to miss anything or have weird issues. Only issue I get is extreme slow speeds when using "full privacy" mode in Amethyst... but that's a Tor issue, not a Nostr issue.

How are precious metals not sound money anymore? I can agree they're not practical for day-to-day use without being minted into coins (which gives governments control) but how are they not sound money?

Yeah, it showed the oxidation almost as soon as it began heating up. I tried cleaning and re-wetting the tip but it didn't help, unfortunately.

One thing I never quite understood about the Bitcoin maxi crowd is its tendency to demonize precious metals. I understand the "no second best" argument (even if I don't completely agree) when it comes to other coins, but in my eyes, it'd be wise for everyone to save in both Bitcoin AND precious metals.
Bitcoin is great for portability, integrity and sovereignty (especially if you memorize your seed phrase). It's a lot more practical in the day-to-day than gold and silver are. Plus, you can swap to other coins when necessary, including Monero if you want greater privacy.
On the other hand, holding at least some of your worth in gold/silver/platinum is prudent because it's far more understood by the masses, it has had universal value for millennia, and it would still be completely usable in a crisis/collapse situation (as would hard resources like food/water/bullets).
Yes, I'm aware of EO 6102 and the tyrannical crackdown that presented on the citizens' right to hold gold, but that's exactly why I say it's ideal to hold both and memorize your seed phrase especially if you store the bulk in Monero. That way, even if a despotic regime were to take your gold, silver or platinum, they can't take all of your worth.
Just some thoughts I had as I was doing some research on the benefits of precious metals. 🤔

I set some stuff aside and jury-rigged a very ghetto setup so I could solder something, only to realize the solder wasn't melting properly. After some troubleshooting, I realized the tip of my iron is apparently dead. The solder would melt quicky when touching the upper part of the iron tip, but the part that you actually need for soldering wouldn't heat it up enough.
So that's fun. Now to figure out what sort of tip I need for this thing (it was a gift, no idea what brand it is), check my local Lowe's or Home Depot to see if they have the right kind, and order one if they don't. Hopefully that'll fix it, I don't particularly want to have to buy a new iron. 🙃

Not everything but it tends to be. For me, my life has always involved digital stuff so I don't think that'd be the cause. I can't feasibly disconnect 100% for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that I have to study hard for the career I'm trying to build. I do try to balance digital usage with offline hobbies, though, such as listening to some of my music on vinyl, reading books, enjoying loose leaf tea, etc.

I've considered that but I don't know if it's an issue with digital things, I'm pretty effective at controlling that. It's part of why I don't post on Nostr or other socials nearly as much as some folks do. I think it's more of an issue where I'm stuck in this loop of waking up late, not getting much done, working on stuff until the last hour or two of my day, then unwinding with things like music, games, watching movies/shows/documentaries, etc. By the time I'm done, it's later than expected and I get to bed too late. Then I wake up late again because I keep hitting snooze since I'm too groggy to even realize that I'm doing it 🥴

#asknostr What are some ways that you guys have to fix/change a sleep schedule that has been completely off the rails for years?
I've been struggling to fix my schedule for years now, and it's starting to really take its toll on my mind, on my health, on my discipline. I've become more of a lazy procrastinator as of late and I don't like it. I'm not seeking to become a morning person. I've never been one, even when my schedule wasn't in bad shape, but I am seeking to at least have more regularity and less of a struggle with getting to bed on time and waking up with the alarms without immediately snoozing them.
And yes, I do know for a fact that my diet isn't helping. I don't exactly have the ability to eat as healthy as I would like to, but I try to eat as healthy as I can with what I have.
