Also, wild caught salmon sushi is eyebrow raising for me. Salmon is not traditionally sushi fish, and only became sushi fish because of Norwegian farmed salmon not being as common to run across the parasites found in the wild stock.
I suppose perhaps those parasites may be more common in Japan than other places, but the idea of paying more for the wrong sort of fish in sushi seems particularly egregious to me.
Yellow snapper isn't one I see much so that's probably a pricey point. I'm still shocked at anything over $40 though -- maybe $50 if you're including tip and any meals tax. And I'm accustomed to Boston prices -- not exactly a cheap backwoods.

That's definitely an amusing LNURL.
I migrated off knots a good few months back, frankly as the rationale became clearer for the datacarriersize change. Can't say I love Core governance entirely but it is generally decent code, and I just don't currently have hardware to make running libbitcoin make sense.
Doesn't help that even if I suddenly had my house stop sapping dry every spare cent I'd probably still throw more at playing with reticulum. I don't think I can justify paying for an NVMe at today's prices.
And sadly while China may kill the American AI boom with open source models that might be WORSE for hardware prices as people run their own.
So yea, my Core putts along on a mechanical HDD for now. Doing the two things it needs to; broadcasting my transactions and verifying my Bitcoin.

Node count was never what was going to make it happen. Economic reality was.
If far more Bitcoin holders were willing to sell their bitcoin and buy the fork with it, it'd have mattered (honestly, even if they weren't running nodes themselves -- as long as they were using nodes that were activating the code). Simply running bitcoind.exe doesn't somehow give you a vote. Bitcoin is money, as it were, and economic reality matters.

I was gonna say you can still run Knots without running 110 but I'm not seeing the option for that as of 29.4.
Guess you get to backport changes yourself to 29.3 if you really wanna do it.
For what it's worth, it works about as well as a face diaper anyway, and served largely the same purpose -- targeting a mild nuisance.
Maybe Production Ready will work in the configurable mempool options though. Can't say I've ever taken issue with configurability on the user side, and Samson may be on board anyway.

My thought with the dollars is that settlement is slow with fiat -- especially when it's not being sent by fedwire.
But yes, we do have some nightmare infrastructure vulnerabilities that I imagine we'll all get to learn about over the next few years as it stops being concern that nation state adversaries will exploit them and turns into concerns that a guy with a laptop and access to an open source open weight model can attack them.
What we forget is that most of our adversaries don't actually want us to collapse. America needs China for manufacturing. China doesn't want its treasury stockpile devalued as it's economy would collapse hard. NK arguably is the loosest cannon but China keeps them on a short leash.

If it is you can skew correct and just use one die or coin. Odd odd gets thrown out, even even gets thrown out, odd even is a 1, even odd is a 0. Or you can go high/low, either way. Works for coins too.
Trick dice will just make it take all day throwing out bits but you'll still end up with your entropy eventually.

TRNG or CSPRNG are both viable solutions.
My reason for dice is that they're a LOT easier to audit. Especially if you're doing Von Neumann skew correction so it doesn't matter if they're imbalanced anyway.
It's impractical to use dice for most of what we rely on RNG's for. But most of what we use RNG's for is less high stakes, and where it does really matter more with no reversibility it's usually higher stakes on the server side. But taking an hour to roll dice for a key that holds my family's wealth? Yea I'm happy to keep it low tech.

Wow. To be fair SMS based 2fa is such a false sense of security, and TOTP is great except that doing customer support for 90 year old clients trying to get help with 10 or so different options is a fucking nightmare. Nobody wants to pick one to be 'officially' supported and the result is that the people who would benefit from the security the most, often with largest balances, are most likely to turn it off entirely if given the choice.

You can derive the raw hex from 256 bits of binary entropy. Amber will let you import that raw hex so you can even just stop there.
There are also scripts you can run offline to convert to a bech32 encoded nsec.

We're arguably talking about two very different aspects. You're talking more about maxi tribalism. Which I would in many cases call antithetical to the essence of toxic maximalism as an ideal, which should be uncompromising adherence to principle rather than devolving into groupthink.
I know we don't see eye to eye on Monero, and what you do with it is frankly your business and not something I think we need to hash out at every interaction -- and I wouldn't say that's me rejecting the principles of toxic maximalism.
I would generally reject multi coin tools because they're not focused. Whether it's that they're using monero or ETH or running a word processor on them is almost beside the point. I'm actually somewhat surprised that someone using monero would be interested in somethingblike Cake wallet for the same reason.
Arguably I think this may have more to do with Unix philosophy than Bitcoin anyway. Do one thing and do it well -- i'd rather have more things and make them work together as I want rather than one thing that does everything in ways I can't control or audit easily.

The people saying that bitcoin toxic maximalism failed us are taking absolutely the wrong lesson here.
I know nobody wants to blame victims. I get it. It's not something that feels good. And I'm not calling them bad people.
But the issue is that people weren't toxic enough. Even Coldcard's OWN documentation said that using the RNG required trust. The devices literally boot up and say "Don't trust. Verify" on the screen.
And people trusted it anyway.
This isn't a failure of toxic maximalism. It's people taking shortcuts and either not being accurate or honest with themselves about their adherence to it.
The lesson here isn't that self custody is bad. It's certainly not that you should trust the experts. It's that you need to double down on your toxicity. Turn over every fucking pebble.
And if that means its easier to just use SIMPLE methods such as skew corrected coinflips an verification of the resultant hashes using independent multiple configurations of verifiably airgapped hardware, do it that way.
If you can flip a coin twice to generate a bit, you can flip it 512 times to generate 256 bits. If you think you can't...you're probably wrong. If you actually can't, you probably need someone close to you to uncle jim your set up (as well as a power of attorney on your existing fiat accounts). It's overwhelming, sure. It's not actually hard though. Take it slow, take it smooth, and test what you get as a result to make sure you can still spend from it.
I could tell you it's not your fault and that you did everything right. Everyone else seems to want to do this. But this takes your agency away. I'm sorry you operated on bad advice, and if I ever off hand suggested the Coldcard and you thought I meant to just use its RNG I sincerely apologize for any miscommunication. But I'm sure as shit not going to tell you in this moment of despair that you're helpless about it, and that you can't get back up and iterate and do it right this time.
Shit happens when you're a sovereign. But as long as you learn from that shit and keep moving forward, you don't owe fealty to anyone else.
Sorry if this isn't what people want to hear right now. Maybe tuck it away and read it in a few years. But I'm getting really sick of the sickly sweet poison going around about how everything was done right and how much better people would be on exchanges (or on devices that made it HARDER to get verifiable entropy). Making a mistake doesn't make you a bad person, but refusing to recognize that a mistake was made sure does make you more likely to be at the mercy of someone else in the future.

I'd still go with dice personally -- its just easier to audit. But bitaddress has been solid for a long time and if you really just can't bring yourself to playing yahtzee with your bitcoins it's a viable option.
Just remember, as with dice, you want an AIRGAPPED computer. Really, to be safe, one that won't ever go online again. @nprofile…em7z pointed out on his show this week that you can get a laptop for $35 or so these days...if it comes down to it, buying a laptop to generate a key on and destroy is far better than doing this on your phone or regular laptop.

Knots has always had an expiry time to encourage updating. You can turn it off in the config file.
Not new for BIP-110.

At the end of the day I got a stateful signer to safely store a key. It did that well. Why ask it to generate one when I could so readily do one myself?

The folks I hang out with have a bit more regard for them.
Ever since I learned about onetime pad cryptography I knew how little software RNGs were to be trusted. And while CC has TRNGs...well, verification of simple things is easier than of abstracted code.
Bitcoin has complexity, but the pieces of it are all relatively simple. Hiding those simple pieces behind abstraction in the name of 'user friendliness' always struck me as dangerous.
Same way I feel when it's done to my operating systems too...

I shouldn't be too much of a punk here as Jimmy is right that there are pitfalls with dice. You don't really want to 'roll' the dice as this does bring out the bias...you more want to shake up dice and then slam it down. Doing it in a cup is helpful. With coins you want it to just fall and sit there, no spinning all over the place, or you get that 51% heads outcome.
All still better than 32 bits of entropy but you do start losing a few.
I do think when it comes to this aspect of dice though the perfect becomes the enemy of the good. I'd much sooner take 256 bits that might be 240 that I can examine the generation of before I'll take corrected everything inside a black box that might have an incorrectly written case statement that bypasses it altogether that I won't see. If 240 bits isn't enough it's time for a passphrase and/or multisig.

Oh I wouldn't generate keys with Liana. It's more something you'd use in place of Sparrow.
It's a wallet, as in software, that enables some very cool miniscript wallet formats. Particularly handy for inheritance schemes and some other things with conditional timelocks and decaying multisigs and things like that.
You'd still be using it with external signers.

Which? Milk Sad was bx using a non CS PRNG. Coldcard was using the wrong RNG despite having TRNGs. In both cases use of too weak an RNG was the issue.
But yes circumstances were different. End result though was 32 bits of entropy instead of 128-256.

The crazy thing about the Coldcard bug is that it's almost identical to the libbitcoin issue with bx from 2023 known as "Milk Sad". How many more will rely on an RNG to generate keys?
People using Bitbox, Jade, Trezor etc should all be taking a hint if they relied on an RNG too. You don't get time to fix it when a bug is found. Assume your seed is compromiseable unless you can prove otherwise.

For everyone panicking about the Coldcard vulnerability and who is now exploring methods of generating a new seed, just remember there's a lot of flawed ways to use dice – especially d6's. Coinflips are hard to fuck up. You can flip a coin 128 times for a 12 word key or 256 times for 24.
Dice can work but there are pitfalls to avoid that aren't.t obvious.

More seriously, a backup on Google drive is very different than Google unilaterally being able to turn off your identity. You can back up to Google AND your hard drive AND a piece of paper. Heck you can even make your nsec be a BIP84 key from your Bitcoin master seed and you'll already have it backed up if you know the derivation path.

Sure. Systemd was brought in around a decade ago on many of the large Linux distributions to replace sysvinit which had been the dominant init system since...maybe ever? Definitely the late 90's anyway. It was a mess of tangled shell scripts on most of these systems, so it's not totally shocking that they made the shift, despite the fact that systemd is in many ways not in line with the Unix philosophy of "do one thing, and do it well."
The issue is that we started seeing software packages start building out as a dependency, as if Linux meant systemd was a given. Except it doesn't, and hopefully never will. Gentoo uses OpenRC, Slackware uses BSD style rc scripts with sysvinit, Void uses runit with some support for alternatives. To name a few of the larger systems (all of which I'd argue are a heck of a lot more pleasant than the Debian and Redhat based world).
I'm particularly salty today because I have been diving into FIPS and Reticulum and it turns out that while FIPS will fun on ANYTHING from openWRT to windows to OS X to even Android, it's got systemd as a dependency for desktop Linux.
The idea that any of this software should be tied intricately to the init system is wild. Modularity is a tradition going back to the 70's in the Unix tradition, and systemd is a slap in the face.

That said...logging in with google involves multifactor authentication usually.
Setting up a nostr signer initially is a little trickier perhaps (or at least novel), but in my experience actually signing in with them is mostly clicking "sign in with extension" or "sign in with amber" and then clicking "allow" (and maybe specifying how long you're allowing for).
I'm no big fan of Primal but I expect someone onboarding with Primal and then using it as a signer may actually be easier than logging in with Google. Might need to do some "market testing" of that hypothesis though.

Got some cool functionality on desktop.
On phone...the UX is very limiting with the fun stuff. NomadNet with an on screen keyboard in Termux is unusable as far as I could tell.
Cool that Sideband exists for messaging though.
FIPS enabling everything that works over IP6 is definitely interesting to avoid ending up in that software desert. No LoRa yet but as it's been out less than 6 months I'll exercise patience.

Correct. Mandatory signaling first ONLY checks for the version bit.
Mandatory activation is at 965,644, which, on mainnet is expected in September. If the fork fails as is widely expected, they may never reach that block height without resorting to a hard fork proof of work change.

Though it is worth noting that if they ever lose that 51% majority hashrate the other miners could deactivate it and reinstate the split, as legacy Bitcoin recognizes their blocks as valid.
Also worth pointing out that any one legacy block requires 2 bip110 blocks to reorg, but a single legacy block splits off from a 110 chain.

I'm not sure what you mean by decide to fall.
At height 961632 BIP110 nodes start throwing away any block that doesn't signal BIP110.
They either get the heaviest chain and reorg the others, or they create a new shitcoin.
The latter seems far more likely at this stage. But there is a chance miners will make a reckless last minute change and successfully 51% attack the network to activate BIP110.

Miners absolutely care about market value (honestly moreso than they care about fees -- the bulk of what they make is still subsidy). Scare off market value with frivolous forks like this and miners may not make any less fees but still get less market value.
Bitcoin being hard to change and unlikely to do so for frivolous reasons isn't just a nice to have. Get rid of it and the whole value proposition falls into question. Are my transactions permanent? Is 21 million a cap? Is a presigned transaction I make today ever going to be able to be broadcast?
There's always some doubt, but when we see first hand that the whole network gets yanked around by an angry hoard of retards, it goes from being a nagging worry at the back of your mind to a real and present danger. No counterparty risk turns into not knowing what small group becomes the risky counterparty you now have to worry about. Bitcoin never did away with trust -- Satoshi solved the matter of trust by distributing the trust across a big enough network of diverse people that it was unlikely they'd ever be able to go along together to be a risk. If that premise falls apart it all unravels.

It's reactionary and not founded on first principles, and represents an awful precedent for future upgrades of the network.
Also, the market seeing the network yanked around by a minority band of fanatic zealots would not be a good luck for demand.

Doing some reading about #FIPS and #Reticulum this morning. At first glance there seems to be a fair bit of overlap, and it does look like FIPS does look to make use of radio in the near future (as well as WiFi mesh). But I'm teasing out the distinction of just how lightweight Reticulum aims to be, while how functional FIPS aims at. Seems like FIPS is a great way to make use of the existing infrastructure in a private and censorship proof way, with the ability to add additional networking off of the existing TCP/IP stack, while Reticulum really seems to shine at creating networks (including a global network) function effectively in as efficient a manner as possible, allowing for some VERY impressive networking on shoestring infrastructure, largely by dispensing with TCP/IP entirely and building from the ground up for efficiency.
Curious to see where both go, and will definitely be playing around with both.

Humans always depend on money.
Core is one implementation that doesn't control the protocol. There hasn't been a change since taproot.
Don't like how Core does things, use something else. 'Reference implementation' just means most popular. There is nothing official about their project that isn't also true of btcd, libbitcoin, utreexod, or...well, I guess as Knots is a fork of Core it is sort of something it has dependencies on. But it needn't follow their decisions in a forward looking manner.
By all means, use something else. But don't be surprised that Bitcoin jumps on you if you side with an attack on it.

GM, can't complain -- finally seem to actually be done being sick after 2 weeks.
Also just learned about joinmarket-ng's TUI wallet interface and may be looking at just how much functionality it has. If I can replace Sparrow and bitcoin-cli with a TUI that does most everything I'll be a very happy man.

Roughly 17% of nodes are running Core 30.2 or 31.1. The rest have declined to upgrade at this time or are running something else.
I'd not jump to the conclusion that most Bitcoiners yet are doing things quite so blindly. Umbrel and Start9 do seem aimed at changing that, but for now people seem to look at what they're running.

Yea...there's a spectrum, as with most things.
Arguably having a dummy cell phone is less likely to draw as much scrutiny than showing up without one. 'I don't have a cell phone' said nobody under the age of 70 honestly.
But anything you have at the border is a lot more out in the open than anywhere else you have it. And data goes over borders without needing to be subject to this state of affairs, if only you avoid physically bringing it with you.

There's a lot of way to make vices seem less problematic.
Credit is the essence of fiat.
Take on risk if you like, but don't then be surprised when dipping your toe in the shark tank results in some sharks coming up for a nibble.
A collateralized loan with liquidation on the line is a conditional sale paired with a bet against it. May as well be a covered short in the money call spread where your long call strike is your liquidation price, except you're paying interest instead of collecting the premium from time value.
Literally trying to have your Bitcoin and spend it too.

Yes, lots of code gets nacked, especially if it doesn't align with design principles.
But anyone can fork the code or make their own node from scratch.
'Reference implementation' is just a popularity label. Make something better and Core's off it's seat quickly.
