I hate how barefoot shoes are seen as this weird hipster fad that normal people don't have to concern themselves with. Like this is all very simple:
1. Traditional shoes aren't shaped like human feet. They're narrow towards the front which compresses toes inwards causing bunions and other issues. This is a known fact.
2. Arch support removes the necessity of using the muscles in your feet that maintain your arches so eventually you may become flatfooted.
3. Solution: make shoes that have flat soles and are actually shaped like human feet.
Why is it a hot take to say that shoes should be shaped like feet?? And why is it considered so completely normal to spend all our lives wearing shoes so mismatched with our anatomy that they end up literally mangling bones? Narrow shoes are only seen as "normal-looking" and "fashionable" because we're so used to them. There shouldn't be anything normal about clothing that causes you long term bodily harm and fashion shouldn't take priority over health.

Safety razors are so great. Like you buy a decent razor handle once and then just get dirt cheap, super sharp razors that you can afford to replace as often as you need to so you never have to use a dull blade.
I've been using the same safety razor since before the pandemic. Instead of shaving cream I use generic foamed up soap. Over the last 7 years or so I'm pretty sure I've spent less than €20 on all my shaving-related expenses. Most often I don't cut myself at all and if I do it's usually because I'm being stupid (shaving against the grain) or lazy (not replacing a dull razor).

Mechanical watches require maintenance. They have lubricants in them that deteriorate over time and have to be replenished. They're also far more likely to break from shocks or magnetic fields. Mechanical watch repair and maintenance has to be done by experienced experts and their services are neither cheap or easy to find locally depending on where you live. In comparison, changing a battery in a quartz watch costs spare change and you'll likely find a service that can do it in any town or city. Many mechanical watch owners are ok with this but many aren't aware in the first place and face a very unpleasant surprise when their "eternal" watch suddenly halts after 5 years of no maintenance..
Please, if you intend to get a mechanical watch do your own research on how much maintenance is gonna cost, how often you'll have to have it done and where you can have it done. Be aware that these are things you're signing up for with a purchase like this.

2026-04-15 11:11:59 UTC

Let's talk about watch movements.
Many of you are likely aware that watches come in 2 basic variants: quartz and mechanical.
- Quartz watches use electricity (usually from a battery) to make a tiny quartz tuning fork vibrate really fast and create oscillating electric currents that can be used to keep track of time. They tend to be cheaper to produce.
- Mechanical watches use the energy stored in a spring to power a complex mechanism of gears which can only move in tiny increments at the frequency dictated by an oscillating wheel with a tiny spring in it. They're much more expensive to produce.
In either case time is kept thanks to an oscillator with a set frequency. For mechanical watches that frequency ranges from 3 to 5 Hz whereas for quartz watches it's usually 32,768 Hz or more. Because of this quartz watches are significantly more accurate, usually losing less than 1 second per day compared to mechanical watches which can lose up to 30 seconds per day.
Still, many people prefer mechanical watches and I can think of many very understandable reasons for that. Making them requires impressive craftsmanship, fully analogue, mechanical devices are super cool, they have a sweeping seconds hand that's satisfying to look at, they don't need to have batteries changed etc. Most people who own mechanical watches have them not for practical reasons but rather because they appreciate the craft of mechanical watchmaking and I fully get it.
BUT!!! There is a "but" and it's important for me to address for the benefit of future mechanical watch owners:
Some people invest in a mechanical watch, specifically an automatic one where the spring is wound through the movement of one's wrist, because they believe the watch is this perfect closed system that will keep going indefinitely since there's no need to change batteries. That it's a one time purchase that gets you a timepiece for life. This isn't the case. More in the follow up post.

Cis people are so weirdly hung up on gendering objects. Like pretty often a customer will show interest in a watch and then ask me if it's a men's or women's watch in a way that it almost feels like they're asking ME for permission to enjoy the watch. I typically default to saying that most watches are unisex but if the customer finds out what the intended demographic of a given model is it seriously affects their ultimate decision!!
And like that's so crazy! You like the watch, it's the right size for your wrist, you look good with it but you still choose not to buy it because some guy in Japan or Switzerland arbitrarily decided it's for women??? Men are allowed to wear smaller watches (tiiiiiny watches were the pinnacle of formal men's fashion historically) and women are allowed to wear larger watches. All that matters is that it isn't absurdly out of proportion relative to your wrist.

2026-03-27 16:23:45 UTC

Fun fact: it's better to buy a cheaper watch you'll actually wear than a stupidly expensive one you'll only ever keep in a box. There are lots of well-made watches in the 50-150 euro range that will last for many years while still looking great.

Update:
Thank you all for all the advice! It's seriously very appreciated!!
I ended up going to a physical store, trying on a pair of Be Lenka Rebound Thermo's and liking them enough to buy them. Walking around in them has been quite ok so far but we'll see how I feel after wearing them for longer periods of time. They don't feel as weird as I expected which I suppose is a good thing?? Also they're so much warmer than my chucks and I have to admit I didn't realize just how much I needed actual winter shoes at this point,,
Anyway if anybody cares about my experiences with these shoes specifically or more broadly barefoot shoes let me know if I should do occasional updates or something. Also if anyone has any further advice please do tell me!

Dear fedi, I need autism advice!
I need to buy myself new shoes for the winter and I've been considering switching to barefoot shoes. Does anyone here know if they're actually worth it? If so, what brands are ok? Otherwise do y'all know any good shoe brands that make ergonomic shoes with wide toe boxes?
I've been struggling with researching this since most brand comparisons are compiled by Americans and they seem to have their own ergonomic shoe market over there with lots of brands that are unavailable anywhere else.

2. AMERICANO
The americano is a very popular drink, partially because if you live in a place where most cafes only make coffee using an espresso machine it might be your only option when it comes to larger black coffee. It's just an espresso shot (whether a single or double is anyone's guess but likely double) with a bunch of hot water added. Traditionally an americano is still not actually very large as it's typically made with an espresso:hot water ratio between 1:3 and 1:4 although at this point all definitions are meaningless because each cafe does things differently anyway so sometimes you'll get a small cup of coffee (under 150ml) and sometimes a large bucket (250ml+).
The main issue with the Americano is that most cafes dial in their espresso to taste good as espresso, not as watered down espresso. You're essentially losing the dense, oily mouthfeel of espresso and getting mediocre flavor in return. If you're really craving larger black coffee at a chain cafe this might be your only option but if you're at a specialty cafe you're much better off ordering filter coffee (batch brew or pour over) which will have been dialed in to taste great as a larger black coffee.

1. SINGLE SHOT ESPRESSO
Right off the bat let's begin with one of the most confusing drinks, the humble single shot. The misconception here is that it's, you know, one espresso shot and that a doppio/doubleshot is a drink consisting of two separately prepared and extracted single shots of espresso poured into one cup. This is not the case. Single and double shots of espresso are both made in one go with the main difference being that they use differently sized baskets that fit different amounts of coffee grounds. For a single shot you'd usually use 7-9g of grounds fitted into a tiny conical basket whereas a double shot uses a cylindrical basket that usually fits 14-18g (although larger baskets are not uncommon these days). In terms of volume, espresso is typically made at a ratio of grounds:liquid of about 1:2 meaning that a single shot would be about 16g and a double shot would be 34g.
The main issue with single shot espresso is the conical basket. It is very difficult to make good espresso consistently using one of those so most cafes don't bother and will instead pull a double shot for you and split it in half, usually pouring out the half they don't serve you. This is dumb and wasteful as you might imagine. This means if you order a single shot you're either getting bad coffee from a conical basket or a bunch of coffee goes to waste. Specialty cafes often do not offer single shots for that reason. If you like espresso, order a double shot. It's genuinely the "default" espresso at most non-italian establishments, it's gonna taste better and you'll usually get more coffee for your money.

PREFACE:
This could probably be a whole essay but I'll try to be concise. Many people go to cafes and most of them order the same handful of menu items without really understanding what exactly it is they're ordering or why. You might be one of these people and that's ok! You don't have to be knowledgeable about every little nice thing you enjoy consuming.
However, many of the very popular drinks you'd traditionally find in most cafes are not particularly good for one reason or another and as a barista I think that 9 times out of 10 you're better off ordering something else instead. In this thread I'll go over some traditional drinks that I particularly dislike, explain why I think you shouldn't order them or why you might not be able to even find them in specialty cafes and I'll suggest better alternatives that scratch similar itches.
Please remember these are my (fairly educated) opinions and not absolute objective facts. If you absolutely love one of the drinks mentioned below and you've already tried everything else and none of it works for you that's completely valid. My goal here is simply to educate, clear up some misconceptions and, hopefully, guide people towards finding more enjoyable coffee experiences. WITH ALL THIS SAID:

2025-10-05 19:49:26 UTC

TLDR:
1. Single shot - It's either bad or wasteful. A double shot/doppio is THE default at most cafes, it's not as big or caffeinated as you might think, it is LESS work for the barista, it will likely taste better and get you more for your buck.
2. Americano - Watered down espresso is typically not as good as filter coffee. If possible get filter. Also it should be small but most cafes water it down too much.
3. Cappuccino - Traditionally made with a single shot (look above) and it's very tiny (if that's what you're looking for sure but most people who order it want more caffeine and a larger drink). In most cafes you don't know what you're actually getting when you order it because ratios and recipes are meaningless with this one. Get a flat white instead.
4. Ristretto/lungo - Espresso with the ratios way off. Typically tastes very bad. Just get an espresso.
Now for the actual rant:

"But Chinese medicine has been around for thousands of years and it's been working super well for them!!"
Oh yeah? Some of the earliest records we have of average lifespans show that the average life expectancy in China in the 1700's was under 25 years lmao
For comparison the life expectancy in England at the same time was 37 years.
Can we please fucking stop romanticizing traditional Chinese medicine simply because it's so "ancient" and "oriental" and "mystical"? We've had ancient, traditional medicine here in Europe too. Like bloodletting! Bloodletting was based on medical theories from ancient Greece and yet no one is claiming that *those* specific ancient people were so wise and infallible because they weren't from some far away land and so they don't have that same level of "mysticism" about them.
Humans have always been just as wise (or stupid) as they are now. But we have much better tools and way more knowledge these days. Let's fucking use that.

2025-05-31 18:02:08 UTC

I love how "natural medicine" convinces people that medical drugs have numerous side effects because they're poison meant to keep you unhealthy and herbs are natural and don't have side effects so they're good for you.
If a substance acts on your body in any meaningful way it *will* have some side effects and a possibility of overdose. Because if you alter the way one part of a complex system works it will have effects on the whole system. If a substance has no possible side effects it likely has no real effect on your body.

Friendly reminder that eating meat daily is a very new phenomenon and has been shown to be quite unhealthy for humans. Excessive meat consumption has been found to increase the likelihood of various health conditions and meat production is one of the largest sources of CO2 emissions driving climate change.
If you wanna eat like our hunter gatherer ancestors you're better off reducing meat consumption and increasing the variety of plant-based foods in your diet. It's gonna be healthier for you and the planet.

Like there isn't even really discussion about the espresso itself. If someone posts about the flavor of their coffee it's usually because they're having extraction issues, not because they wanna discuss the drink itself. The drink that the sub is supposedly about. It's all about buying more and more gear aaaaa

2025-05-23 09:28:50 UTC

My working theory about the lifecycle of the average r/espresso user is as follows:
- rich cishet white man gets addicted to coffee
- he decides to spend a bunch of money on amazing gear and specialty beans to make his addiction seem like a passionate hobby
- he realizes he doesn't actually like espresso so he either switches to basic supermarket beans or to a capsule machine and makes Starbucks-like dessert coffee drinks

2025-05-18 23:26:29 UTC

Yesterday I talked to a friend who told me they've been making an espresso based drink lately. By espresso they meant a bunch of instant dissolved in a small amount of water. Part of my soul died hearing that.

Wow the Tymbark barista oat milk is still the absolute best plant milk for coffee I've tested so far. Behaves just like cow milk, creates beautiful micro foam without the weird large bubbles I always seem to be unable to get rid of with many other brands and it works well for latte art. Why is the nicest barista plant milk made by an apple juice manufacturer?? How did this happen!?!?

2025-05-14 14:24:07 UTC

One thing to understand about coffee as a hobby is that specialty coffee is not as expensive as it may initially seem, especially if getting coffee at a cafe is part of your daily routine.
Like sure, it seems extremely extravagant to get a small bag of beans for 70pln (€16.5, which is on the high end of what I'd normally buy) but even then you're only paying something like €1 per doubleshot espresso and adding milk increases the price only marginally. An espresso at Starbucks is 3 times as expensive and 10 times worse (I don't know who actually drinks espresso at Starbucks, the beans they use are low key charcoal) and any basic milk drink is gonna cost you almost 5 times more. Even at the most generic cafes you're going to pay a lot more per cup than if you make the coffee yourself even when using beans from some of the fanciest roasters.
What I'm saying is, if you get your daily fix of caffeine at cafes, switching to specialty coffee at home is actually gonna be cheaper and tastier.

Pretty much everyone in the comments can't imagine why someone wouldn't be able to spend an additional couple hundred dollars to save themselves 2 minutes of mild physical effort in the morning. They're all screaming about convenience and speed and how they just can't be bothered to put in a bit of effort so they'd rather spend a fortune. And so they can't see why they'd ever suggest a hand grinder even if someone specifies they're on a budget.
What a bunch of privileged pricks.

2025-04-23 11:06:47 UTC

I mean the real reason is probably that so much of the "espresso community" considers themselves an exclusive Rich Coffee Person Club and thinks themselves above something as serf-like as grinding beans by hand. Get the nicest and most convenient equipment or get out. I hate it.

2025-04-23 10:47:16 UTC

What's up with espresso people seemingly only ever considering electric grinders as viable options? Like even when I see people talking about budget espresso setups they'll go like "ok so this is a really good budget grinder, it's only gonna cost you $800" and it's like bro you can simply get a hand grinder that can easily handle espresso for like $50. At a couple hundred dollars you're gonna get the very best of hand grinders and they'll be waaaay more than suitable for dialing in espresso. And like if you're a reasonable person and only drink a few coffees per day you'll only spend a few minutes grinding with a hand grinder anyway, it's really not a big deal. I don't even know why you'd actually need an electric grinder unless you're working in a cafe and need the coffee ground up in seconds. Heck, you can grind your beans by hand while your machine heats up!! I seriously don't get why there's such a strong push for extremely expensive electric grinders..

I've had at least a few encounters now where someone said something straight up racist or homophobic only to follow it up with "Why are you criticizing me? It's my opinion! You *have* to respect my opinion"
No, I have to respect your *right* to have an opinion. I can still say your opinion is trash and you're a piece of shit for holding it.
It's very similar to people arguing that their views can't be challenged because they're based in religion and they have the right to freedom of religion. Yeah you can believe whatever you want but that doesn't mean your beliefs are immune to criticism.

Just because you're entitled to have any opinions you want doesn't mean you're entitled to have your opinions respected :dragnuwu:

I'm not sure why so many transfems are into feet but I have absolutely no right to complain :dragnmelt:

From the moment I understood the weakness of Teflon, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of cast iron. I aspired to the purity of the blessed skillet. Your kind cling to your Teflon as if it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude polymer you call a non-stick coating will wither and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved. For the Cast Iron is Immortal.

It is genuinely ridiculous just how easy it is to foam milk in a french press and how well it works. Like the texture it produces with just a few pumps is amazing. As a demonstration I offer you a photo of some iced coffee I just made. I'm still so surprised it took me so long to learn that you can even do this like wtf
