I've had at least a few encounters now where someone said something straight up racist or homophobic only to follow it up with "Why are you criticizing me? It's my opinion! You *have* to respect my opinion"

No, I have to respect your *right* to have an opinion. I can still say your opinion is trash and you're a piece of shit for holding it.

It's very similar to people arguing that their views can't be challenged because they're based in religion and they have the right to freedom of religion. Yeah you can believe whatever you want but that doesn't mean your beliefs are immune to criticism.
