Cis people are so weirdly hung up on gendering objects. Like pretty often a customer will show interest in a watch and then ask me if it's a men's or women's watch in a way that it almost feels like they're asking ME for permission to enjoy the watch. I typically default to saying that most watches are unisex but if the customer finds out what the intended demographic of a given model is it seriously affects their ultimate decision!!
And like that's so crazy! You like the watch, it's the right size for your wrist, you look good with it but you still choose not to buy it because some guy in Japan or Switzerland arbitrarily decided it's for women??? Men are allowed to wear smaller watches (tiiiiiny watches were the pinnacle of formal men's fashion historically) and women are allowed to wear larger watches. All that matters is that it isn't absurdly out of proportion relative to your wrist.

Fun fact: it's better to buy a cheaper watch you'll actually wear than a stupidly expensive one you'll only ever keep in a box. There are lots of well-made watches in the 50-150 euro range that will last for many years while still looking great.

Thank you all for all the advice! It's seriously very appreciated!!
I ended up going to a physical store, trying on a pair of Be Lenka Rebound Thermo's and liking them enough to buy them. Walking around in them has been quite ok so far but we'll see how I feel after wearing them for longer periods of time. They don't feel as weird as I expected which I suppose is a good thing?? Also they're so much warmer than my chucks and I have to admit I didn't realize just how much I needed actual winter shoes at this point,,
Anyway if anybody cares about my experiences with these shoes specifically or more broadly barefoot shoes let me know if I should do occasional updates or something. Also if anyone has any further advice please do tell me!

Dear fedi, I need autism advice!
I need to buy myself new shoes for the winter and I've been considering switching to barefoot shoes. Does anyone here know if they're actually worth it? If so, what brands are ok? Otherwise do y'all know any good shoe brands that make ergonomic shoes with wide toe boxes?
I've been struggling with researching this since most brand comparisons are compiled by Americans and they seem to have their own ergonomic shoe market over there with lots of brands that are unavailable anywhere else.

2. AMERICANO
The americano is a very popular drink, partially because if you live in a place where most cafes only make coffee using an espresso machine it might be your only option when it comes to larger black coffee. It's just an espresso shot (whether a single or double is anyone's guess but likely double) with a bunch of hot water added. Traditionally an americano is still not actually very large as it's typically made with an espresso:hot water ratio between 1:3 and 1:4 although at this point all definitions are meaningless because each cafe does things differently anyway so sometimes you'll get a small cup of coffee (under 150ml) and sometimes a large bucket (250ml+).
The main issue with the Americano is that most cafes dial in their espresso to taste good as espresso, not as watered down espresso. You're essentially losing the dense, oily mouthfeel of espresso and getting mediocre flavor in return. If you're really craving larger black coffee at a chain cafe this might be your only option but if you're at a specialty cafe you're much better off ordering filter coffee (batch brew or pour over) which will have been dialed in to taste great as a larger black coffee.

1. SINGLE SHOT ESPRESSO
Right off the bat let's begin with one of the most confusing drinks, the humble single shot. The misconception here is that it's, you know, one espresso shot and that a doppio/doubleshot is a drink consisting of two separately prepared and extracted single shots of espresso poured into one cup. This is not the case. Single and double shots of espresso are both made in one go with the main difference being that they use differently sized baskets that fit different amounts of coffee grounds. For a single shot you'd usually use 7-9g of grounds fitted into a tiny conical basket whereas a double shot uses a cylindrical basket that usually fits 14-18g (although larger baskets are not uncommon these days). In terms of volume, espresso is typically made at a ratio of grounds:liquid of about 1:2 meaning that a single shot would be about 16g and a double shot would be 34g.
The main issue with single shot espresso is the conical basket. It is very difficult to make good espresso consistently using one of those so most cafes don't bother and will instead pull a double shot for you and split it in half, usually pouring out the half they don't serve you. This is dumb and wasteful as you might imagine. This means if you order a single shot you're either getting bad coffee from a conical basket or a bunch of coffee goes to waste. Specialty cafes often do not offer single shots for that reason. If you like espresso, order a double shot. It's genuinely the "default" espresso at most non-italian establishments, it's gonna taste better and you'll usually get more coffee for your money.

PREFACE:
This could probably be a whole essay but I'll try to be concise. Many people go to cafes and most of them order the same handful of menu items without really understanding what exactly it is they're ordering or why. You might be one of these people and that's ok! You don't have to be knowledgeable about every little nice thing you enjoy consuming.
However, many of the very popular drinks you'd traditionally find in most cafes are not particularly good for one reason or another and as a barista I think that 9 times out of 10 you're better off ordering something else instead. In this thread I'll go over some traditional drinks that I particularly dislike, explain why I think you shouldn't order them or why you might not be able to even find them in specialty cafes and I'll suggest better alternatives that scratch similar itches.
Please remember these are my (fairly educated) opinions and not absolute objective facts. If you absolutely love one of the drinks mentioned below and you've already tried everything else and none of it works for you that's completely valid. My goal here is simply to educate, clear up some misconceptions and, hopefully, guide people towards finding more enjoyable coffee experiences. WITH ALL THIS SAID:

TLDR:
1. Single shot - It's either bad or wasteful. A double shot/doppio is THE default at most cafes, it's not as big or caffeinated as you might think, it is LESS work for the barista, it will likely taste better and get you more for your buck.
2. Americano - Watered down espresso is typically not as good as filter coffee. If possible get filter. Also it should be small but most cafes water it down too much.
3. Cappuccino - Traditionally made with a single shot (look above) and it's very tiny (if that's what you're looking for sure but most people who order it want more caffeine and a larger drink). In most cafes you don't know what you're actually getting when you order it because ratios and recipes are meaningless with this one. Get a flat white instead.
4. Ristretto/lungo - Espresso with the ratios way off. Typically tastes very bad. Just get an espresso.

Like bloodletting! Bloodletting was based on medical theories from ancient Greece and yet no one is claiming that *those* specific ancient people were so wise and infallible because they weren't from some far away land and so they don't have that same level of "mysticism" about them.
Humans have always been just as wise (or stupid) as they are now. But we have much better tools and way more knowledge these days. Let's fucking use that.

I love how "natural medicine" convinces people that medical drugs have numerous side effects because they're poison meant to keep you unhealthy and herbs are natural and don't have side effects so they're good for you.
If a substance acts on your body in any meaningful way it *will* have some side effects and a possibility of overdose. Because if you alter the way one part of a complex system works it will have effects on the whole system. If a substance has no possible side effects it likely has no real effect on your body.

Wow the Tymbark barista oat milk is still the absolute best plant milk for coffee I've tested so far. Behaves just like cow milk, creates beautiful micro foam without the weird large bubbles I always seem to be unable to get rid of with many other brands and it works well for latte art. One thing to understand about coffee as a hobby is that specialty coffee is not as expensive as it may initially seem, especially if getting coffee at a cafe is part of your daily routine.
Like sure, it seems extremely extravagant to get a small bag of beans for 70pln (€16.5, which is on the high end of what I'd normally buy) but even then you're only paying something like €1 per doubleshot espresso and adding milk increases the price only marginally. An espresso at Starbucks is 3 times as expensive and 10 times worse (I don't know who actually drinks espresso at Starbucks, the beans they use are low key charcoal) and any basic milk drink is gonna cost you almost 5 times more. Even at the most generic cafes you're going to pay a lot more per cup than if you make the coffee yourself even when using beans from some of the fanciest roasters.
What I'm saying is, if you get your daily fix of caffeine at cafes, switching to specialty coffee at home is actually gonna be cheaper and tastier.

Pretty much everyone in the comments can't imagine why someone wouldn't be able to spend an additional couple hundred dollars to save themselves 2 minutes of mild physical effort in the morning. They're all screaming about convenience and speed and how they just can't be bothered to put in a bit of effort so they'd rather spend a fortune. And so they can't see why they'd ever suggest a hand grinder even if someone specifies they're on a budget.

What's up with espresso people seemingly only ever considering electric grinders as viable options? Like even when I see people talking about budget espresso setups they'll go like "ok so this is a really good budget grinder, it's only gonna cost you $800" and it's like bro you can simply get a hand grinder that can easily handle espresso for like $50. At a couple hundred dollars you're gonna get the very best of hand grinders and they'll be waaaay more than suitable for dialing in espresso. And like if you're a reasonable person and only drink a few coffees per day you'll only spend a few minutes grinding with a hand grinder anyway, it's really not a big deal. I don't even know why you'd actually need an electric grinder unless you're working in a cafe and need the coffee ground up in seconds. Heck, you can grind your beans by hand while your machine heats up!! I seriously don't get why there's such a strong push for extremely expensive electric grinders..
