Most consumers don't care because they have been shackled to server-centric proprietary malware and SaaSS where top-down control by malicious corposcum & their ilk is the norm.
And indeed, I note the distinction between user/peer and consumer (pejorative). It is entirely on purpose to maintain dependency on the server-centric schema and the abuse of users (and thus the status of much of it as software which abuses users, malware; seeing the users so reduced to mere helpless consumers) it enables.
I believe GPON being rarely symmetric is a choice rather than a technology requirement, since it has support for symmetric use as a set of standards.
