That's kind of gross.
I'm very curious if Nintendo will sue.

> the biggest problem with democracy is - if 60% of the population want to diminish the rights of 40% of the population what stops them?
Given how fascists typically get into power the legal way with a much slimmer support base and some vaguely clever maneuvering, I do not think it would be a change for the negative.
Needing actually *real* sizeable support (and not being able to hide behind figureheads for it) would be a notable change.

Representative Democracy seems plainly farcical on its face to me.
How can a being that isn't a gestalt of its constituents truly represent them? Absurd, any other being represents its own interests first, even if they try to act in their understanding of the beliefs of another.
And then on top of that they can make non-binding promises? What exactly stops them from just lying the entire time? Nothing?

It's annoying that a recent project of mine stalled.
Object Storage is all too often those huge ridiculous unwieldy codebases hard to audit or investigate properly.
So some people on some blogs say "why not use webdav, it should be more than enough for most small use-cases", which, indeed, on paper it should. So one goes to investigate, and finds that a lot of webdav servers are plainly broken and so are many of the clients, many failing something as basic as properly doing non-broken percent-encoding of paths & filenames (some of the servers fail too).
At this point the most reasonable option is probably writing a 9p client library or something. [diod](https://github.com/chaos/diod) at least works properly, even in unprivileged user mode.

The main problem, I find, is that most alternatives don't have filesystems with the features I want.
ZFS still hasn't merged anyraid (the very first non-mirror vdev it should've implemented but somehow they didn't).

That is of course the first place everything went wrong.

Had an interesting dream.
Wasn't the only one, but it was the main noteworthy one.
Some kind of manor/non-euclidean space mix of a survival horror setting and detective setup.
Kind of setting where doors don't necessarily lead to the same places, or the same times (forward or backwards).
I think it would be very interesting to have a game like that. Has someone made one already?

Depending on the variety they can be just as prone to exploding as lithium-ion.
Some sodium chemistries however can be *less* prone to exploding or igniting than LiFePO (certain power-by-volume inefficient aqueous electrolyte ones essentially *can't* catch fire at all), so it varies.

2026-07-27 22:07:27 UTC

- reply

Incidentally there are places that make custom ebikes & batteries and it *is* possible to get them to make one a custom battery using safer chemistries.
A mild increase in weight really doesn't matter.
If I had to move around much, I would seriously consider that for my primary personal vehicle.

2026-07-27 22:04:33 UTC

- reply

Both the laptops and cars concern me greatly, as it happens.
The laptops more so, even, because for some unfathomable reason every manufacturer eschew LiFePO and just goes with maximally flammable lithium-ion (most cars go for LiFePO now I think). I hate it.

There is enough commercial sale of internet traffic metadata that if they care to know they can. Especially with the data they're already gathering and most sites being hosted in countries that *don't* have meaningful legal protections.
VPNs are not anonymizing tools. They're censorship & privacy speed bumps.
It's possible the local feds don't care that much, but I wouldn't bet on it.

2026-07-21 18:40:40 UTC

A VPN is just a secondary ISP. There's no reason to trust it any more than the first.
The main "privacy" use-case with filesharing is purely about inconveniencing merely-corporate adversaries via countries where they can't just demand the data without a crime-related reason due to local privacy regulation. (They'll immediately roll over if there is, no VPN operator will care to go to jail for their users.)
The main use-case for most people is bypassing geoblocking nonsense.

Nintendo kind of gave up being creative about controllers after the Wii too, with Ringfit being like... the last bit of that.
At this point I just look at it and think it's silly to even have consoles if they're not going to meaningfully differentiate themselves from common PCs in any way, from peripherals to capacities.

2026-05-19 00:00:08 UTC

I just feel like there was once creativity in the design of controllers and now they all just look like PS2 controllers with barely any variation.

2026-05-18 00:07:11 UTC

Well that was a waste of time.

The desktop VM is trusted. The phone? No.

Ah, well depending on the ingredients it may require more oil. In some cases and with some flours up to adding some oil between each pancake/blin. (Not too much because oil absorbs more heat than water so it can lead to overcooking/burning bits of the pancake otherwise. If it's floating on oil there's too much.)
Older "nonstick" pans tend to stick a lot more than everything else when they get damaged (there's also the microfragmentation of teflon & such that I dislike so I prefer to use either ceramic or just plain stainless pans).

The fact both Debian and Gentoo once supported FreeBSD as a kernel provides some hope regarding this and its feasibility.

2026-05-04 21:10:05 UTC

"Right to Reputation" is such a stupid legal concept.
A reputation is supposed to be something you deserve. If you *did* the thing and it harms your reputation when people talk about it, you have *no one but yourself* to blame.
It is completely nonsensical to have a right to a good reputation that is *undeserved*.
"It has to be of legitimate public interest", oh my goodness, what a "beautiful" victim-blaming tool for silencing any & all discrimination the judge sympathizes with. Of course it's "not of public interest" that John McDude is a rapist and publicizing that fact is harmful to his reputation. Yeah, given how relevant things like mass civil disobedience and jury nullification have been in various civil rights movements, I don't think relying on the judge having good judgement is a sane position to take.
As for people spreading falsehoods that harm? Defamation and harassment already exist to cover that, there is zero need for unjustified and unjustifiable reputation bullshit.

Wifi is annoying to debug, because the whole notion of interference comes into play (unless you're rural or have no neighbors, I guess).
5Ghz wifi is *somewhat* better about it because it has such weak penetration through mass that cheap walls (it also has a fairly short reach) will practically prevent interference from being a consideration (and will also mean you need an AP a room to have adequate signal).

2026-04-12 03:51:37 UTC

It's unfortunate that with the ways human brains are inherently broken, it's likely that calling out abusers and the grossly negligent doesn't actually work.
(They might feel affected for some time, and some may actually fix their act based on that, but others will just dismiss any possible learning experience to be perceived by refusing blame for the consequences of their own actions.)
It's certainly satisfying to do, but probably not as effective as long-term psyops.

Without fast persistent storage that would be pretty slow. On the other hand, it would make power fluctuations and such barely do anything as almost no state would ever truly be volatile.

Otherwise a small form-factor computer with a removable modem dongle/insert using the network exclusively for data routing is superior in every aspect.
It doesn't require an absurd amount of incredibly unsafe integration, for instance.
And even the emulation could be solved by simply having SIP trunking readily available for everyone.

I wonder which between bytecode VMs or fully software-emulated x86 CPUs is least friendly to attempts at exploiting hardware vulnerabilities with arbitary third-party code.
(Let's assume that neither the VM implementation nor CPU emulator are broken in such a way that one can just run arbitary code directly on the host instead.)
