You are free to create a convention on the rights of livestock animals, if you are so inclined. Such could certainly create protections that would invalidate one person's ownership of an animal and transfer it to another. I do not think it will achieve widespread voluntary adoption, if it does not allow for a noted omnivorous species to eat animals under any circumstances.
The main difference, I think, is that most adult humans seek vengeance if you eat their babies.
