I would switch to grapheneOS if I could use it on fairphone because I believe in an absolute right to privacy its not just for abusers. I'm not going to get a phone other than the fairphone because it's more important to me that there is no slavery and conflict minerals used in the phone and the modularity is a nice plus too. So unless grapheneOS supports a phone that has these features I can't ethically justify buying a phone without them just to use it.

It costs a missed opportunity to give more appropriate advice: stay away from google and use more private community forks of android that if I understand correctly will not be affected by googles papers please app ecosystem.
A strategy focusing on begging tech giants to not do the will of capital is basically lying to the public that there is a chance this can work.
In theory yes the open letter is a nice thing to have regardless of how google reacts because then we have something to point to how google is ignoring public opinion - but it needs to be presented with heavy caveats and we need to focus on getting average people out of googles grip so they don't hold this much power over us

Hey "No Ethical Consumption" people, nothing is more deactivating for me than seeing caring thoughtful people such as yourself tell me that something I'm doing to make the world a better place is worthless (it isn't) and that you, nominally my ally, will do nothing to help. It's almost like you're more interested in an excuse to not have to do something like go vegan than you are at actually providing an actionable plan we can work together on.

I like how people are recommending a bunch of FLOSS messengers now, its an opportunity to check out underrated projects like I just a few minutes ago learned about the FLOSS project Quiet (https://tryquiet.org) from a discord community trying to relocate.
The website says its all E2EE P2P with tor built in, channels like slack/discord, no email or phone number required. Unfortunately no quantum resistant encryption on the roadmap so I still would recommend SimpleX for general purpose instant messaging but Tor-by-default and P2P are genuine advantages over Simplex

We should aim to use the most private secure and anonymous means possible, even if we don't need them personally because theres safety in numbers. If only people who's life was at risk from the state used simplex or something else with quantum resistant encryption then the users of those apps would make a pretty good shortlist for surveillance.

Why does the capacity for moral reasoning and principled action confer rights for you? Because then they might be able to defend your rights? If so then once again everything comes back to other people only mattering because they can profit you.
As a technical point I can actually prove I am human I keep up to date with state of the art image generators and I happen to know that an image drawing of an analogue clock displaying a time of your choosing, plus some text of your choosing I can draw with a mouse would be too much for an AI to generate. Individually these are difficult for AI to do together its virtually impossible

This "not my problem" thinking is exactly how privileged people let fascism slide because they are either unaffected or benefited by fascism.
The way of looking at the world you have detailed over this thread is one where no one but you really matters, and if someone can't profit you then they might as well be dead to you, and in fact you will pay for someone to murder them.
And if you want to say that affairs that ultimately benefit or harm you are the only ones worth moral consideration well then why can't the chicken say the same thing, you can't both be right. Humans learned to torture imprison and murder eachother because we practised on the non-human animals first
From the moment we are born the first kind of hatred we are taught is to hate other animals: we are taught that their lives are insignificant and come second to our trivial interests
If you teach a child that even an ant a small. powerless creature deserves to live and be free from undue pain that goes a long way towards accepting different sizes shapes and colors of humans.
Sapience is a circular logic, it basically means "human-like behaviour" so what you're really saying here is "only those animals that behave superficially like humans deserve a right to life"

Afaict simplex has all the same privacy and anonymity benefits as deltachat, and it might even have more features: simplex has calls, live-text, file transfer, voice messages, out of the box tor integration with client settings and onion address support, tag-sorting for chats, GUI theme customization and export including custom photo backgrounds.
Given that both simplex and deltachat have very similar threat models and architecture its difficult to see why anyone would choose to use deltachat over simplex when simplex has quantum resistance and deltachat does not

You start off by saying the left must be united against the right, but then you carve out a specific exception for when we should shun those on the "left". When people "divide the left" they do it for principled reasons not because theyre opposed to any sort of collaboration. In fact it is the whole idea of "leftist unity" that is idealist, the idea that eveyrone on the left shares fundamental values is just naive and kind of patronising. Really the labels left and right aren't very useful at all they are broad tendancies and don't point to any particular ideology or set of foundational beliefs.

I'm glad to hear that I will have to take a closer look. Classical encryption is still a deal breaker though because of Store Now Decrypt Later attacks, SimpleX uses the double ratchet algorithm developed by signal, maybe DeltaChat could too idk if that's helpful.

Yes S&M practises can be dangerous, so can vanilla straight sex, or bungee jumping or alcohol or weed.
Individuals don't always make the best choices for themselves or others but by framing that as intrinsically the fault of S&M you're moralizing an amoral activity and painting with broad strokes over the numerous well documented safe and consensual practices
Sadism also comes with mental health risks one of which is "dom drop", a feeling of guilt after a scene for hurting someone they care about, doms need aftercare just as much as subs
Some of your arguments sound similar to arguments of "cultural degeneration" that sexual deviants are becoming too unashamed and their inherently harmful practices are leaking out into "polite society"
Either S&M is fundamentally abusive in which case we should oppose it unambiguously, or it is not intrinsically abusive and the problems you're talking about have a deeper root cause that we should focus on rather than villainising people practicing safe and consensual sex

In that case, S&M can be practised consensually and safely, the notion that all S&M is abusive is a deep misunderstanding of the trust and communication involved.
Staying safe, (including mental health) and consensual while practising more dangerous kinks like S&M kinks is almost always at the center of every kink community I've come across
I'm not denying that people use S&M as an excuse to abuse people or that there are even spaces that excuse and glorify it, but that is not what S&M is about, people I've met in kink spaces IME are actually better at consent than non-kinky people.
For example there is a misconception that domination is something that just sort of sign up for with a random person who can immediately step over your boundaries and call it kink, that couldnt be further from the truth, domination is a delicate and trust-based relationship where in actuality the sub has all the control

If you want more of something you should post it yourself, upscrolled will end in tears, especially their "we dont moderate on political bases" is a red flag that they will basically go the same way as bluesky. In case you didnt know, "politics" is used in this context to allow people to continue abusive or harmful behaviour that the moderator doesn't consider "political" and then those that speak out against it are considered political, I can't get into the entire history of similar cases right now but I've posts about problems with bluesky and I predict many of these will happen on upscrolled
Its basically got the same red flags as "free speech" enthusiasts

The formation of worker councils happened outside of the bolshevik revolution afaik but I dont think they were sufficiently organised to counter the threat of bolsheviks and were largely complacent to the central party as long as they would tolerate the worker councils but by the time they no longer tolerated them there was nothing they could do

I know you don't believe in vanguardism or one party rule
As an anarchist I still disagree with syndicalism because its too focused on the worker identity and doesn't seem to say much about externalities like climate change or harm to non-human animals and it seems to center able-bodies neurotypical experience by default
Also the worker council owned factories in the USSR were quickly taken over by the central party which I think speaks to the inherently hierarchical concept of the firm
I do agree that workers shouldn't be coerced to conform to the authority of a planning council but I also think that the fundamental concept of self identifying as being a part of the firm before the commune is irrevocably adversarial

Like I said in another reply it is not on anarchists to proscribe a foolproof procedure or programme that can be failed or succeeded our main goal is to dismantle hierarchy and authority that prevents people developing the natural ability to freely associate and resolve conflict. With that said I have organisational preferences and concepts of how committees might be structured to balance democratic input and efficiency but they are just that preferences. The duress basically comes from the fact that the claim to private property is always invalid. So hoarding resources you dont intend to use, purely for the purpose of an MCM transaction is exploitation, you happen to have this private property, and your ownership was procured through the contributions of the entire commons so therefore it belongs to the commons not to the last person who happened to finish building it.
Personally I think that even most personal property should be on loan from the commons like a library

Scarcity is not as big a problem as you think it is it is manufactured by capitalists through the control of supply, resource hoarding and inventory destruction. As well as market manipulation, planned obsolescence and an obsession with an ever expanding extractive growth model of economics.
I like the ideology of degrowth I think it is necessary to stay within ecological limits, and if free associations of workers don't voluntariliy comply with these limits it is in every persons survival interest to fight them on it

The concept of individuals being solely responsible for the fruit of their labour is also inaccurate, every individual enjoys a plethora of subsidy and investment into their activity in the form of the contibutions of the commons for utilty, supply chains, knowledge work etc.

What I mean is that renting out capital is not a real job, if workers need capital to produce necessities then it belongs to them no questions asked. And even if its to produce non necessities its still an MCM transaction that leads to capital accumulation arising from inequities that would still exist if all that has changed in this society is the means of production are collectively owned

This is why private property of all kinds is theft, renting capital that is the product of your own labour as either an individual or a group replicates exactly the problematic part of capitalism: the assumption of ownership over a porition of someone elses labour because you lay claim to the capital. I have no idea what would happen if they broke the law and tbh I think the new ruling contradicts the equality act 2010 but theyre saying this is the advice theyve been given from their legal team. in a country where you can be put in prison for years for holding a sign supporting a direct action group I have to be careful what I post on the public record but I will say that there are no laws if no one obeys
in the uk intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of an offence is a crime triable with the same sentence as what you are encouraging
