My favourite two origins of AI/Early AI in scifi are Lumpy, from the Cory Doctorow (npub1fdr…lvhs) 2008 short story "Pester Power" which is a learning algorithm based around pretending to be human in chat rooms.
and (without spoilers) the KGB AI in the opening part of Accelerando by Charlie Stross (npub1dnd…hzjs) .
