I think the way to think about the relationship between parents and children is about duty. Parents have the duty to do what's best for their children — get them vaccinated, make sure they learn to read, teach them right from wrong, etc. — their role is to be guardians, until the children can take care of themselves. Because of this duty, the state recognises that parents have certain rights with respect to their children.
