I don’t see it as first customer and second customer, it’s not a functional transaction: I think he’s using this visual perspective to invert real and imaginary. Her inner reality is presented as factual, and the factual is presented as a fiction both literally and figuratively by relegating it to the reflected world.
In ‘reality’ she stands alone in her internal existence - isolated, disconnected - from events around her, offering a “fourth wall” breaking gaze to the viewer, inviting us to truly see her.

I hear the term “regime change” tossed about with dismaying ease, as if it’s as simple as changing the sheets or something. So, for the sake of all operating in the same reality:
1. “Regime change” is an act of war and a violation of long-standing international law FOR GOOD REASON.
2. This hasn’t stopped the US (and other major powers) over the the last 70 years
3. The track record of “regime change” is abysmal, leading almost inevitably to more human suffering, and less stability in the long term
4. The current (terrible) regime in Iran is a *direct result* of previous “regime change” meddling

Every protocol, every system, every community carries an inherent politics; they cannot be neutral. They can be explicitly pluralist, but that is not a neutral position. The goals, priorities, and praxis of the fediverse are inherently countercultural in a capitalist society.
The Fediverse will be ignored until someone sees a way to coopt or compromise it then we can either play along for expediency and lose the Fediverse the way we have lost so many promising systems in the digital age, or stick to our principles and fight for them beyond this corner of our lives.

Do you mean: is there enough sun in winter to meet the energy demands of a home? As a day by day on the spot provider; no. Over the course of a year; easily… Alberta is one of the sunniest places in the world, and cooler temps make solar panels more efficient.
Do you mean: can an Albertan completely heat their home with a heat pump? No, not on a heat pump alone, for our coldest days a backup source is needed. But the right heat pump will do the job down to -15C to -20C at least, leaving on a few weeks that require supplemental heat, and then only to a 10C differential. A heat pump essentially moves the home to a climate that only needs gas or electric heat for a few weeks a year instead of for six months straight. There are people in Edmonton heating their homes with heat pumps right now.

So, Ontario is going to build a complex of 4 SMRs… they expect the first to come online around 2030, with full capacity only achieved later in the 2030s. It will cost over $20B to build and in the end power the equivalent of 300,000 homes.
If they instead offered a $30,000 grant and an additional $30,000 in loans to 600,000 home owners to install solar and heat pumps, they could go at least as far for the same investment in a fraction of the time.

This debate ends up polarized because there is a dedicated group of advocates and industry shills loudly braying that nuclear is the solution to all our problems and that all that is needed is for governments to get rid of those pesky red tape road blocks. (cf carbon capture and storage)
The motivations are transparent, weakened regulation and environmental protections improves the corporate bottom line and nuclear power keeps power generation concentrated into monopolist hands.
Why else should we be skeptical that nuclear will be more than a small part of the transition? Because of the time lines: The closest nuclear power here is 8-10 years away, while I could effectively take my home off the grid in less than a year if I just had the money. Massive spending on a variety of mega-projects that only benefit the energy industry takes steam out of a distributed, faster, and more democratic transition.

I know a young person experiencing and learning to adapt to life with POTS
They are exploring mobility aids, but have very limited resources, so I’m looking for advice on rollators vs wheelchair for function, utility, flexibility, comfort, and because cost. In general they experience symptoms on the milder side of things; vertical and functional through most school days and activities, doing well for several weeks at a stretch then experiencing periods where worsening symptoms prevent them from keeping up. Activities out of the house include high school, drama, choir, public transit (including a walking ‘last mile’ at times) and craft/maker fairs. Location Edmonton, so winter climate a consideration.
Advice and comments from experience and boosts/tags welcome, I know there are many of you out there.

The problem: American society gives scammers not just a free pass but status and admiration instead of isolation and shame.
In the world of power and business, scamming people is elevated to high art, everything from endless TOS no on can read to bait and switch ad campaigns to free offers that roll into locked-in subscriptions to insurance companies denying the plain service they sold you to … the list is endless. And the men (mostly) who do this are lauded, followed, even made president. And then on the other end of the scale all kinds of dodgy hustles are accepted in communities that don’t see what other choice they have.
As with most social ills, shaming the perpetrators - especially the wealthiest, most prominent, most ‘white-collar” - and throwing the book at them in proportion to their wealth will work better.
So yes, making them the slimiest of slimy low-lifes requires de-stigmatizing victims so they can speak openly.

This response is a horribly patronizing one: it means that the mere suggestion that a patient might be an equal partner in care, with their own agency, ideas, motivations, and standing is threatening to him.
I understand that some of it is fed by the awful mess that is insurance and a medically litigious society, but also in there the old idea that medicine is a mysterious, arcane black box that patients are just supported to subject themselves to on the hand-waving say-so of the great doctor; this is an archaic practice that needs to be diligently scrubbed out of modern medical practice.

That’s not what I’m saying. Let me be as clear as I can:
Trans people and migrants are saying that they would prefer a neighbour who voted for Democrats over one who didn’t vote because *they* are being directly harmed as a result of that choice.
I’m saying that if you are going to be critical of others over the result of their choices, you need to be willing to listen and engage with the results of your choices.
And I’m saying that the choice not to vote didn’t save a single child or adult in Gaza.
I am directly saying that reducing these choices to a black and white, “good” vs “bad” is profoundly distorting.

*You* actually don’t have any choice… every American is - directly or indirectly - supporting genocide through the material provision of weapons and funds to the state of Israel, and *you* are part of American society whether you like it or not, and regardless of whether you personally support the action.
There is a stream of purity politics that says, “If I don’t vote my hands are clean, I’m a an island of purity somehow separate from the rest of society, and I am therefore not responsible for the terrible things that are being done.” By this logic, an Israeli might decline to vote, and then simply sit on their hands saying “I didn’t vote for Netanyahu, so I’m not responsible for the terrible things my society is doing.”

But there wasn’t a choice to “not genocide” (at least not on Nov 4) while there was a choice to not persecute gender queer folk, and there was a choice for many fewer harms in other spheres.
By which I’m not advocating for those who vote Democrat and then sit on their hands while genocide happens any more than I’m advocating for those who stop resisting domestic persecution because “the other guy won.” We all have an obligation to resist evil with all the tools at our disposal, all the time.
Likewise, we all have an obligation to own the consequences of the imperfect choices we *are* able to make, and it seems to me that refusing to hear the voices of trans and migrant people is just as much an avoidance of responsibility as the BlueMAGA you are so critical of.

I didn’t vote because I’m not an American. The right to strike is meaningless if the government orders binding arbitration and back to work every time a strike becomes ‘disruptive’ … disruption is the point of a strike - it’s how labour action works - not allowing it undermines workers.

Giving ourselves a pat on the back and saying, “at least we aren’t as bad as the US” is a deeply embedded part of Canada’s DNA. But as the US continues to slide deeper into post-capitalist feudal fascism it’s a reassurance that ought to feel increasingly hollow, I know it does for me.
I want and will fight for an amazing, beautiful, enlightened future for Canada, for my children and neighbours, and refuse to settle for just being a slightly brighter reflection of America.
The lies that are used against investing in education to reduce tuition are the same lies and resistance regardless of whether they are wielded against lower tuition or free tuition; so we may as well fight for what we really want instead of half measures.
Equal access to education is a right, because every person is inherently and uniquely valuable, and the only way to even come close to realizing that is free tuition.

We have a volunteer lily in a rather wild shrubby corner of our garden. My kids have dubbed it the “night lily” (as opposed to the day lilies we have plenty of) or alternately the “miss kim” after a quirky and vivacious choir director they all sang under. Probably seeded from a neighbours garden who was much into asiatic lilies, may be a wild cross (?)
Interestingly, one of the them grew a spare petal this year!

Hockey rape trial looks to be heading to not guilty verdict, the expected outcome in a supremacist society. Our society values people not for who they are, but for their utility. Hockey players learn that they can get away with shit because no one cares who they are, only whether they are useful.
Can the goalie stop the puck? Great, say the supremacist sports fans, then I don’t care if he uses and abuses, rapes or beats other people, he’s too useful to set aside. And this matches the value placed on E.M. - her value to them was solely in being a sexual object.
I don’t watch sport, or engage with celebrity, because these are riddled with supremacists who only value others for their utility. Our society is groaning under weight of a system where millions of people only value others for their utility. And once you accept that, then the next step is to decide that some people aren’t useful and so have no value, which leads us to concentration camps, and death squads, and carpet bombing cities.
Fuck them all.

I have no sympathy for them whatsoever.
Canada’s Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act has been in force since 2000, making it a crime *in Canada* and against Canadian law to commit “genocide, a crime against humanity, or a war crime” regardless of whether the act took place in or outside of Canada.
This not new law, nothing was changed on them.

Fall asters in my garden are always the same: 4-5 feet tall and super floppy if they aren’t supported, definitely an in the back of the bed kind of thing.
I do have a spot outside my back fence that I use to move things that don’t have a home inside the fence; it’s a dry shady spot between two trees … neglected back *there* they only manage to be about 2 feet tall.

People upset it’s not 100% coverage is described as a Fed gov problem… I lay this one at the feet of dentists, who have routinely used sliding scales to get the max from insurance, and never tell patients about cost in advance.
Dentists know what is covered and what isn‘t, and could (and *should*) easily inform patients of the out of pocket cost when booking the appointment. If someone is surprised by the cost, that on you, dentists.

This year more than others I have noticed a ‘plastic-y’ flavour in the smoke, more reminiscent of a structure fire than wildfire smoke. Earlier this week I saw an article on research that details the development of benzene and formaldehyde from precursors in smoke exposed to UV radiation from being aloft for long periods. These are especially concerning because they are both carcinogenic and far too small to be captured by air filtrations systems. 😞

Because there seems to be some confusion: there is no special unique thing called ‘Palestinian rights’ that others don’t have. Fighting for Palestinian rights means standing in support of human rights, and insisting that Palestinians are human. Those of us who say this don’t think the claim that Palestinians are humans is a unique, surprising or controversial statement. If you don’t agree, perhaps you should spend some time thinking about what that says about you. Human rights are for all.

Shouldn’t be too smug about that… until international events blew everything sideways all that money was working very well indeed. This is why conservatives (esp in Alberta) are so sore about the loss: they thought they had *bought* themselves a sure thing only to have it plucked right out of their hands.
