the usual challenge to ending Electors is that it would require a Constitutional amendment. I can't see any amendment passing right now.

I would really love to see all states do what NE and ME do, and assign electors by district. Yes that would exacerbate gerrymandering problems, but it would encourage candidates to campaign in purple districts in deep red or blue states, instead of focusing on just a handful of swing states.
