I think “always have been” undersells the transformation that’s occurred with the National Post, and then with Google and Meta’s intentional devastation of news media through monopolizing ad dollars. Today’s national news media is a very different business from what it was in the 90s or even before then.

Local news can help, but it naturally has less reach and lacks the whole nation focus.
