I find the fact that Carney is not a run-of-the-mill leg-up politician to be a challenge. I never know what opinion to have about him - a big bag of pros and cons. On one hand, he answers questions, which is refreshing. On the other he often leaves specifics unspoken so you end up having to speculate what it all means. I've basically given up trying to understand him through an ideological lens and have been taking the approach of addressing him point-by-point.
And yes, I agree, his domestic policy is certainly one place he needs some serious clarification.

Scott Bessent says Carney has to stop virtue signalling. I don't think he knows what that phrase means.
The Government of Canada has, by all accounts, been assuming that CUSMA negotiations will be another opportunity for the Trump regime to exercise leverage to extract unreasonable concessions. That "integration that becomes the source of your subordination", as was said in Davos.
They've been pursuing trade deals in every direction to diversify our trade and have been showing some great success in doing so.
In short, as much as I have misgivings about the guy, Carney does seem to be walking the walk overall.
Virtue signaling is when you pay lip service. When you don't follow though. When you want to be seen as aligned with something but are unwilling to put your neck out for it.

Is it standards? I'm asking, I don't know one way or the other. I know my daughter's dream of some-day owning a Japanese K-Truck EV are being dashed by safety standards.
But we also originally had the Auto Pact that murdered our domestic automakers in exchange for a shared Canada/US industry and also created a closed system that was resistant to external competition. Imported vehicles would get huge tariffs. I remember the big "crisis" of the 80s where Japan started making cars in North America to get around import tariffs and the North American makers desperately trying to demonstrate how Toyota and Honda shouldn't count as domestic because, mostly, racism, and then largely failing. I also know the Auto Pact expired in 2001, so I'm not sure if any of this is still relevant.
I do know that arguments about why we should be protective of what is essentially a US industry have to do with jobs in Ontario.

I think one thing that's unspoken here is that massive mobilizations of investment money like what we're seeing in AI could be applied to any activity. Saying things like:
"AI spending is propping up major swaths of the U.S. economy."
Tends to lend at least some credibility to the industry, even in a critical piece like this, as in "on one hand it's a dangerous bubble that will one day burst, but at least in the short term it's propping up a failing economy."
But really, if you sunk trillions of dollars into *anything* it would have the same effect. You could be spending it on painting rocks and it would have the same effect. Think of the millions of workers you'd need to paint them all, the boon it would represent for paint and brush manufacturers.
Or hey, better yet, spend it on something like infrastructure or schools or health services. Something that actually benefits people in the long run. 🤷

When in Cuba it's not uncommon to see billboards, posters, broadcasts talking about the revolution. Sure, back in 1953, Cuba was intolerable and Batista a puppet of foreign colonial power for whom no rope could be made short enough, but you're left wondering: When is the right time to just move on? At some point you have to focus on building an identity based on your own vision rather than the traumas inflicted by your oppressor.
Yes, I am well aware that authoritarian governments the world over use these national traumas as a tool of control. Focus people on the 'why' rather than the 'how'. Nobody would dare question the 'why' without looking like a 'them', but they may be able to get away with questioning the 'how' and that's dangerous.
This is kind of my point after reading through some US media today. You can't get much more than 2 paragraphs into any topic without encountering the language of the revolution. The war on. The war against. The battle for.
Man, 1776 was a *long* time ago.

Okay, so my older daughter was working at the parade this year and while this still isn't official, she's saying that the parade shutdown was likely orchestrated. The article I posted backs this up a bit when you read that Q4P *asked* the Pride grand marshal to stop the parade it was agreed.
You'll remember that Pride's inclusion of the Pro-Palestine cause last year caused all manner of drama. The theory I'm working with is that this year's shutdown may have been an act of defiance against the City and fair weather sponsors.

The Government of Canada stores data in the cloud, not to mention being all in with M365 services (Teams, Exchange, etc) and various other 3rd party cloud-based SaaS offerings.
Shared Services has contracts with Azure, Google and AWS - all approved for Protected B data storage - that's information that includes items of national security and detailed information about Canadian citizens - on the basis that it complies with Canadian data residency.

Been a while since I looked into them from a technical perspective, but back when I was a customer I used to shake my head at how little Internet Rogers did. They supplied the cable network, but everything else was contracted out, usually to some US company. All the early Rogers@Home stuff was basically just Yahoo over cable. And everything got routed through the US.
This doesn't surprise me.

My daughter manages the gardens and, yes, she's big on native species. We've still got that grove of milkweed we were talking about last summer along with various other foraged plant species.

Same here, I'm concerned as well, at least pollinator-wise. Plenty of other bugs including some I haven't seen for a while - like I saw a mantis yesterday. Waaaaay too many ladybugs. Dragonflies, yes. Flies of various types, check. Those bloody mosquitos and deer flies. Just no bees - bumble or otherwise.

For me music is all about the message, whether subversive like a RAtM bomb track or some vacuous pop hit that invites you to tune out and party. When I hear a new song I'll drive right into the lyrics, get to know the artist, put the track into context of their other work.

I was noticing the same on the weekend. Plenty of cute little wasps and we've got a couple dragonflies I've seen, but not a single bee - honey or bumble. It's very odd, there's usually so many of the bumbles around. I hope they're okay and just found a better yard.

That's why I was careful, even with my embarrassingly wrong seat counts above, to point out the assumption of people voting along party lines. Even now I'd like to think there'd be broader, cross-party support at the individual level. This isn't a partisan issue at all, it's about not being a racist and having a bit of empathy.

You got me curious. At least at the party level NDP, Greens, Bloc all want action do they not? That's 60 seats if members vote along party lines. Still incredibly sad that Liberals are not taking this more seriously. CPC you kind of expect it.

Most of Ontario is lit up on Environment Canada's website. It's all "how not to die in the heat" and "here's where the wildfires are" and "how not to die from wildfire smoke" and "severe weathers alerts."
Meanwhile every level of government is singularly focused on achieving unfettered economic growth and seem willing to trample on people to make it happen.

You missed the part where the judge seemed unable to determine if the internal hemorrhaging that killed the victim was the result of being beaten. I mean, he could have been suffering from massive internal bleeding as a preexisting condition, yes?
And for what it's worth, these people may have been cops, but they were off-duty and not acting in any kind of official capacity when this happened. Nice to know the cop card works outside the office.

Doug Ford on Ontario's indigenous peoples today:
“When I first came into office, I told Minister (Greg) Rickford, ‘Treat them well, give them what they need, whatever they want for them to prosper.’ But there’s going to be a point that you can’t just keep coming hat in hand all the time to the government, you’ve got to be able to take care of yourselves,” Ford said.
