They also haven't learned from history. Censorship will not prevent that outcome. It will simply drive the process to clandestine communication channels. A significant proportion of my peer group has already realised this, and while the vast majority are still inured by the existing system and technically incapable of the requisite sacrifices and opsec, at least they're now consciously aware of the need for that to change. What remains to be seen is how many of them will actually walk the talk. Personally if it ever becomes infeasible to circumvent mandatory ID for internet use, I'll delete all my existing accounts and call it a day. Then shit will get real, because that won't be the end of my actions, just the beginning.
