Exactly, there is very little risk they will get their USD back. Lower risk, I'd say, than if I took out the same loan from a bank (uncollateralized) since they can sell whatever amount of my btc they hold to recoup it well ahead of the danger zone (they require "topping up" collateral well before they are close to falling short, since they over collateralize by 2x and require topping up way sooner than a 50% drop in price). It's just weird from a zoomed out perspective, and I think the defense is that the people they borrow the money from won't do it cheaper because they "don't understand bitcoin yet," that sort of thing. Meanwhile, banks just write a number on a ledger and don't have to source the USD from any third party when they make a loan (I think), which is wild, so the extra interest over risk free is just to hedge against defaults (and make a lil income), and yet they come in way lower on interest rate. Anyway, just my 2 sats

A thought occurred to me on BTC backed loans while listening.
Why is the interest rate so high on them? The risk of default is zero, and normal loans charge a bit above the risk free rate precisely to fund risk of default. Just a passing thought, I think the answer is that they themselves don't have access to cheap dollars, but it still doesn't quite make sense to me

I'm also surprised. I have not paid attention to these products thus far, nor do I claim to understand the mechanics fully, but the defenses he put forth felt remedial at times.
