When I first started my group, I asked what people wanted to help the local economy and save each other money.
From the first meeting people mentioned how Charlottesville had a Repair Café and how we should here too. I looked into it, and they are often run through a time banking program where volunteers "earn" hours they can spend on other local volunteers' service. I looked into setting up a time bank here, and it turned out there had been one previously.
I met with those leaders and their biggest problem was with the apps to track hours. They would migrate the volunteers to a cheap app, and then the app would raise their rates so the group couldn't afford it and had to switch. This happened multiple times until people just stopped participating.
"If we had it to do over again, I think it would be really cool to have a physical token. Something cute and collectable, to act as a tip for volunteer service. I think we're all starved for material things in this digital modernity."
So I took that idea and ran with it. We've had an active time bank since April, and our first Repair Café was the kickoff 🥰
