Today we have forgotten the old tradition of vinegar Valentines - cards for haters. Instead of love messages, spicy Victorians sent mocking cards of bitterness to the annoying and unwanted in their lives. They ranged from lighthearted to overtly hateful, but they definitely scratched an itch.

embarrassing is such a good way to put it! Intellectually I know that we need lightness even in heavy times (or especially in it), but it feels so trivial sharing science communication or other fun things.

I've been rethinking my relationship with the internet. Some of you might recall me as a creator on twitter, where my primary use of social media was to share science and surreal jokes. I've long since deleted my account, and a million new platforms rushed in to fill the void left by the once pleasant [enough] twitter. I made it for the US election four years ago and it ruled.
Here's about the earliest recipe you can find, from 1796 - although if you make it I do recommend scaling it down unless you have 3 dozen eggs handy.

One forgotten early American tradition that deserves a comeback is the Election Cake.
Back in 1700's United States, elections were social events. You'd cast your ballot (if you were allowed 🙃), hang with your buds, drink a lot, and have a piece of an enormous brandy-soaked spiced cake.

Hello! I have maybe a silly question about here - when I'm tootscrolling, I often see posts that have very few favourites but a lot of reposts. On other platforms that typically only happens when people are quote posting to dunk on someone, but that's clearly not the case here.
Am I missing a Mastodon etiquette where reposting things you like is standard but favouriting is not? Or do numbers on favourites not display properly?
