Spent a good chunk of the day rewriting the opening of my WIP. I've (depressingly) heard agents know in the first 500 words if your MS is worth reading further.

#WritersCoffeeClub Does your WIP have a prologue?
Yes. It’s a few hundred words long and establishes two key elements: 1) The location 2) The dead body. Chapter one opens with my MC reactions to the above.
Betas like the prologue. I’ve kept it short so even those odd people who skip them will bother to read it.
For me, a prologue reveals the catalyst for the story.
As a reader, I’m not a fan when they’re used as info dumps or written from the POV of a character I shouldn’t invest in.

#WritersCoffeeClub What audio/visual artistic work (TV, movie, play, painting etc.) has been the biggest influence on your writing?
My influence comes from nature. I tap into my ancestors who, thousands of years ago, looked at the stars and saw patterns and gave them names which birthed stories.
Nothing beats going to the original source and using all of the senses (not just visual and audio) to create.

I resolve the questions I anticipate the reader to ask and expect to be answered. I want the reader to have a satisfying experience.
If it’s a series, I’ll leave some overarching questions unanswered and build on them in future books.
My endings tend to be realistic. When I develop a story, I give my characters a list of aspirations, but I never allow them to achieve them all. Reality is full of setbacks, and it’s the same for my characters.

Styles change. Read any old classic and you’ll see commas everywhere. These days it seems less is more. I put in more commas than average. Probably Walken comma level. 😄

Do you prefer writing the first draft or editing it?
For me, the first draft sometimes involves a lot of free-flowing words and exploratory fun. But more often than not, it feels like a jumble of poorly written scenes and dialogue vomited on the page.
I much prefer having the bones of the story down in order to make it shine.

Completely failed to tie up the majority of the big questions and gave us that weak stream of piss of an ending instead.
It put me off investing my time in future multi series tv shows. The first series is usually good, then they get progressively weaker until it becomes a cash cow serving only the diehard fans.

Yes. I’m hoping to finish my current WIP and query late ‘24/early ‘25.
Despite writing on/off for the past six years, I didn’t feel I had discovered my true writing style and built my skill set until now.
It has been a long and enjoyable process. There have been pitfalls, which I’ve learnt from. I’m glad I waited because my early writing was self-centred, trope-filled cringy stuff.

In the past year, humour has become a common theme in my writing. I still write about meaty issues, but there will be something to chuckle about on each page. I guess this is PTerry’s influence.
Real life can be painful. Humanity feels like it’s going in the wrong direction. Personally, a death in the family and a number of family illnesses has made me want to write comedy.
I believe tears and laughter are the best somatic experiences we can have.

I love the Oxford Comma. Makes total sense the Haunted Pencil Jacob Reece-Mogg banned his staff from using it. The Tories like confusing language and the Oxford Comma adds much needed clarity.
One example which REALLY needed an Oxford Comma.

Grammar is powerful because it changes the meaning of the words.

Pratchett said writing is the most fun you can have alone. I would probably struggle to collaborate. I think you need the right person.

@npub1fgl…4jl4 it’s not as bad as Indiana Jones where the same outcome would have happened in every movie (except Temple of Doom) if he’d just stayed at home.
Star Wars has the same issue as Bond. Both nostalgic escapism stories with big stunts/special effects and basic storytelling. The prequels and sequels got panned and the spin off series/films have been mostly misses. Disney is milking the cash cow because it has a cult following.

Instead, he lets himself get blown up because he can’t face not being with his partner and newly discovered daughter (they could have still had a long distance relationship). It might have been believable if there was any chemistry between them. The writing is just awful.

Either Bond is regenerated for the modern day and is content to bump off crazy billionaires (lots in RL to base a villain off) or he goes back to the Cold War era. The films were fun fantasy stories. Killing Bond off in the last one just seemed stupid. The whole point is he saves the day and returns. Not kill himself because he can’t be with his girlfriend and child.
