Love this! We have similar programs here. Many of our community health workers deliver food to people three or four days a week. This is very true of at risk populations that are afraid to leave their homes because of deportation risks. We're living in tenuous times, but there are people who are working hard to help those in need. We are lucky to have such decent humans among us.

I think of this from your grandmother's point of view. She had a young grandson off fighting in a war in a country she likely knew little about. I know she was scared for you, questioning whether she would ever see you again. Chicken scratch, complete with grammatical errors, was her lifeline to you. I bet she kept every one. And how wonderful that you wrote to her!

We had seven unhoused people in today within an hour seeking resources. They needed whatever we could offer; food, gift cards, housing. We can't do it all. The first three shared a phone for their contact number. Two were in their late 60s and due to lose their home tomorrow. The early ones knew the ropes better. Scent training is great fun for high energy dogs who are stuck inside during bad weather. Train your dog to recognize a scent and then hide a container with the scent in the house and play Find It! Cody loves this game and has gotten so good at it we’re running out of hiding places. And sometimes he peeks when I’m hiding it! #dogtraining #dogs #dogsofmastodon Training makes Cody happy, and using his brain wears him out. Bonus for tired dog parents!

All true! I heard a piece on the US response to COVID about a month ago. The original data was collected by volunteers. Volunteers were reporting to the CDC! Until they got tired of it and said this is your job to do. The former director was interviewed and said years of underfunding public health has had a devastating effect; claimed they are short 50K people to adequately do the work. It’s appalling.
