well the google play version alone has +1 million downloads, there are quite some amount of users using it
but if you are comparing with WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal numbers, well there is no marketing or event that made it viral like "Snowden is using this" or some super famous billionaire figures promoting it
so the user base is growing very slowly by pure mouth-to-mouth of people that have really liked it

no one can see the future but Delta Chat is a community project while ArcaneChat is a single-person project
so likely DeltaChat will be around longer, in any case moving from one to another is easy, backups etc are completely compatible
it is better to recommend Delta Chat to people and only use ArcaneChat as a luxury/taste alternative client

something that would have been more interesting in my opinion is using direct wifi connections instead of bluetooth, or having some people act as hotspot nodes and interconnecting with other hotspot nodes to make a huge LAN

it is a nice idea but I am afraid it is mostly useless if it is not paired with some hybrid solution
because yeah you can do some basic IRC-like chatting over Bluetooth but we are in the 2026 and people want to send images and stuff, and doing that over Bluetooth and with several hops on top is super slow and far from ideal
that is assuming you managed to convince enough people to install the app so you actually can have more hops and reach further away people

yes, I know that, but if YOUR home server goes down, your whole profile is doomed and you need to start from scratch and join the room again with another profile, not to mention if all participants where in the same home server the group is gone
while in Delta Chat you can just use several relay nodes and replace them while keeping your current profile part of the group

MTAs are used only to send encrypted blobs around, all the chats and groups concepts are an abstraction in the client side, yes, only the people know about groups, chats and group state, they live in your pockets, not in some sever, the servers have no clue they even exists and hence zero control or influence over it

and btw, Delta Chat already have channels (Telegram style) where there is one admin and other people are just subscribers that can only read, not modify any state nor see the list of subscribers,
this channels are also completely p2p on top of the transport layer, end-to-end encrypted without any server dependency, so they are basically unblockable because admin can always move to another relay node, you are no where to have something like that in #matrix

it is a mini-app you send in the chats, ex. in a group of friends, then without needing any hosting or 3rd party service, you can have such a music "share music and stream together" service that only the members of the group can access and use
it will be released in the mini-apps stores where several other mini-apps exist like collaborative text pads, collaborative to-do lists, shopping lists etc.

it also has good multi-profile and multi-device support, and it is super easy to migrate from one server to another if needed (obvious because several can be used at the same time)
also groups and channels are totally controlled by the users and independent from the server, hence why it doesn't matter if the server ("home server" in matrix) goes down, and why you can migrate to other servers while keeping all your groups and chats

it doesn't matter that delta chat is smtp internally, it works just fine and the UI is more closer to WhatsApp, Telegram etc.
way better than matrix, that is literally what you should never recommend to people to migrate to
besides, Delta Chat is on a completely different superior level when it comes to resilience, it is not just decentralized but it can also use several servers at the same time so if one goes down user keeps receiving messages

buddy you are a bit out of the loop, ArcaneChat can use several relays at the same time, if arcanechat.me goes down it doesn't matter much, your other relays/nodes will keep working, it is also super easy to migrate from one relay to another
about asking for donations, that has nothing to do with the fact that session is burning thousands per month in server costs while chatmail relays are super cheap to run

the i.delta.chat server is not required nor used at all for handling and establishing connection between contacts, it is just a cosmetic fallback to show some hint in the browser when the person opening the link doesn't have the app installed yet and to make the link clickable when sharing in other apps since custom schemes are not usually linkified by apps and social media

not really, the only thing the server is needed for is if you want to open the link in the server, they take down the server now then the links are not worse than signal's sgnl:// links or telegram's tg:// links
in fact, the delta chat invite links are just openpgp4fpr:// links, if you go and open such a link in the browser you will see that the "open chat" button contains the actual openpgp4fpr:// link and you could just copy and share that or just share the QR image

inactive users are automatically deleted after 90 days so the number is of active users (12k by now)
ofc not all users are connected at the same time to the server, unlike so called "proper chat protocols" like #XMPP where a stream is always open, with #ArcaneChat / #DeltaChat it is ok if the system kills the app and only wakes it up when there is a message (push notifications), the server also hibernates IMAP IDLE connections to save RAM etc

to be honest, I don't think there is a solution for streaming of video to huge groups of people
but if it is just a meeting with a few people maybe some p2p calls like using webrtc would work, it would be all end-to-end encrypted and without needing to trust any company and also near zero server costs for them

ArcaneChat is developed by a single person, and I am not an artist, so I am greatful AI allows me to create stuff that even if to you might look like cheap trash, it is way beyond whatever I could ever do
your stance as an artist is understandable, I can recommend you to use the official Delta Chat client instead that doesn't have "slop" artwork
it is super easy to move your profile from ArcaneChat to the Delta Chat client

to amend: it is not just that finding is hard, it just doesn't exist, unless you guys know of some secret ArcaneChat fan-art site where I can browse assets, just random raw assets without the ArcaneChat branding is useless and still requires an artist/image editor / poster creator etc

it is harder to find assets that are free of copyright etc. and even then you have to browse a huge dataset to find what you want and like
also the assets have to use the colors and brand names and logos
actually most of the current artwork used to promote ArcaneChat has been created/tweaked by me in GIMP
there is no easy cheap solution if I want to create for example something like that image shared in this post that has colors that fit and saying "I love ArcaneChat" etc

I don't plan to pay any artist, sorry, giving ArcaneChat for free and paying with my free time is the limit of what I am willing to do, if someone wants to commission a high quality artist to work on creating content for ArcaneChat's social media account etc. they are welcome to do so and I will likely happily use the material if I like it and it is not some bizarre indie art that is not understood on mainstream

some people seem to be offended by the usage of AI-generated content in the ArcaneChat social media account, guys, AI has been used in #ArcaneChat from its very conception:
the welcome image when you just installed the app is AI generated
even the app icon was ai-generated
AI is used to help development
that doesn't mean whatever random stuff gets added without careful review and lot manual work but:
if you have some strict anti-AI policy on what you use, you are in the wrong place!

as already mentioned, ArcaneChat has been using AI from the very beginning even the logo is AI generated and the welcome image in the very first screen you see in the app, if this is a problem to you you are in the wrong place, there is no "valid criticism" to act upon, ArcaneChat is provided "as is" and people that find it useful are welcome to use it, if you don't like something you gotta move on

the thing is, I don't really care, I don't want nor need the app to replace WhatsApp or become super famous, it is just a pet project and my personal chat app, not to please some random group of "special" people, and fediverse is the smallest corner of the internet anyways, out there people don't scream at you for posting some random video, they are busy applying AI filters to selfies
