I think your framing is a bit unfair, in fact from the projects out there Delta Chat Chat is one of the least assuming you are "some dude in the USA", instead you should be looking for "is there a project specifically targeting people behind the great firewall?", notice that this is a cat-and-mouse game, most privacy oriented apps are already blocked in China, Delta Chat was working fine until recently, it might get fixed, and they might keep trying to block

if you don't want to have a shared security-audited implementation that everyone uses, then in fact, you will only make more damage than help the chatmail ecosystem, please, keep ruining xmpp 🙏

for that first the whole client needs to become proprietary, and as said you can always fork it, as we are already doing, at that point then the community can keep developing the chatmail core
it will only mean a different group of people continuing the project, people don't last forever anyway so this is something that has to happen one way or another

> If I don't like the c# library I'm using to build XMPP, I can rip it out and pick another one
which already implies they each have different features or lack thereof, which is exactly the exact same situation you have in XMPP with a lot of fragmentation,
in fact, it is better if people don't create their own chatmail core implementation
if Delta Chat becomes evil, the core is open and you can just fork it and keep using it, no one can take anything away from you

you are comparing a web API of a central server to a local API of a library
which is completely wrong, for your information, ArcaneChat uses its own core that is a fork of the official chatmail core with some modifications and additions
you can do the same and of course you could implement a chatmail core in C# if you wanted to but it is a lot of useless uninteresting work reinventing the wheel while you didn't deliver anything useful to the users

ArcaneChat is made by @npub1rtk…96hh as a customized opinionated Delta Chat according to his own view and assessments of how things should be done, when something is there and not in Delta Chat it means likely the rest of the Delta Chat team assessed things differently for different factors

indeed, the usage for public groups with strangers is the only use case Delta Chat doesn't cover at the moment, if that is the use case you have, xmpp is a better option at the moment
if Delta Chat adds group admin feature that would basically make xmpp and matrix even less needed

besides that, there are even more disadvantages of XMPP, like groups being centralized and dependent on the server where they are created, read here:
https://fosstodon.org/@arcanechat/115963841644398921
anyways since Delta Chat introduced multi-homing and your profile doesn't depend on a single server, it is on a complete different league than current xmpp clients

#ArcaneChat's in-chat mini-apps have more potential than most people realize
This is incredible awesome: treasure chests in chats that can only be unlocked with the right key!
Basically with this content creators and channel owners can offer paid posts, sticker packs and other content to their subscribers
This was created by a channel owner for their particular needs in a few hours, and delivered to users across several platforms, no need to struggle with publishing to app stores

"for now" is not reassuring tho, it is like putting you in a pot and saying "for now the water is just lukewarm, we are not cooking you yet" normalizing having you in a cooking pot, until that water suddenly starts to boil one day because all the infrastructure to cook you is there already

BREAKING: The EU has passed “Chat Control 1.0”
This makes it MANDATORY for companies to scan private messages and submit them to EU authorities.
This includes #WhatsApp, Emails, #Instagram DM’s, and other major forms of communication.
This is so absurd it is hard to believe it is even happening. And we need more than ever apps that are decentralized without a central point of failure

WOW decentralized and ENCRYPTED social media over #chatmail this is such an epic prototype!
the fun part is that by using chatmail:
- DMs are already end-to-end encrypted
- your identity is your encryption key and doesn't depend on a single home server
- your profile is basically uncensorable
since you need to give people your invite link it is kind of like private social network

the domain registrar's nameservers/DNS seems to be having problems
this doesn't affect sending because the ArcaneChat client will keep remembering and using the IP directly even if DNS is down, but for receiving you will need to have an extra relay, ideally everyone should be using multiple relays by now
this will be automated in the future so people don't just onboard in a single arcanechat server

the way that bot works is with its admin creating channels, that is why it is not listed in that list, because it would be useless
what people get is the channels invite links (see https://arcanechat.me/channels )
so if you are asking because you want to create a new channel, you will need to host your own instance

Switching from #WhatsApp / #Telegram to #Signal, or other centralized chat apps, is not a solution if you really care about #privacy, #resilience and #autonomy / #digitalindependence
all of them are centralized services and depend on phone numbers, which makes them super easy to censor, the best services are the one that don't require any personal data at all to register, like ArcaneChat

how is that a "strange belief"??? it is just reality, the one with the weird belief is you if you think everyone should be just using a single server like gmail, etc.
if you use a single email server and it goes down, due to maintenance, DNS problems etc. you are done for, with the multi-relay support in chatmail apps you can use several email servers at the same time and reduce censorship and downtime dramatically

what is a belief?

2026-06-10 03:16:00 UTC

you don't need new infra, just a dedicated email account, just another inbox/address in your existing server
or use one (or several) of the many available chatmail relays,
in any case using a single address is a very bad idea, better to use more than one address/relay for resilience

2026-06-06 15:17:25 UTC

It is never too late to regain control of your online communications, with centralized platforms like #WhatsApp, #Telegram, #Threema, #Signal, etc. you are in total dependency of a central authority, often they can also just cut access to your account, chats and messages.
With #ArcaneChat you are in control of your data, share pictures, etc. with family with the peace of mind that no one can take them away from you, they live in your pockets, you truly own it!

something that would have been more interesting in my opinion is using direct wifi connections instead of bluetooth, or having some people act as hotspot nodes and interconnecting with other hotspot nodes to make a huge LAN

2026-04-12 17:21:11 UTC

- reply

it is a nice idea but I am afraid it is mostly useless if it is not paired with some hybrid solution
because yeah you can do some basic IRC-like chatting over Bluetooth but we are in the 2026 and people want to send images and stuff, and doing that over Bluetooth and with several hops on top is super slow and far from ideal
that is assuming you managed to convince enough people to install the app so you actually can have more hops and reach further away people

there is no need for any bot, we just need groups with admin, see:

yes, I know that, but if YOUR home server goes down, your whole profile is doomed and you need to start from scratch and join the room again with another profile, not to mention if all participants where in the same home server the group is gone
while in Delta Chat you can just use several relay nodes and replace them while keeping your current profile part of the group

MTAs are used only to send encrypted blobs around, all the chats and groups concepts are an abstraction in the client side, yes, only the people know about groups, chats and group state, they live in your pockets, not in some sever, the servers have no clue they even exists and hence zero control or influence over it
anyways if you have more questions, do your own research or ask at https://support.delta.chat

and btw, Delta Chat already have channels (Telegram style) where there is one admin and other people are just subscribers that can only read, not modify any state nor see the list of subscribers,
this channels are also completely p2p on top of the transport layer, end-to-end encrypted without any server dependency, so they are basically unblockable because admin can always move to another relay node, you are no where to have something like that in #matrix

- reply

> For the stated "decentralization" you need all MTAs to cooperate
no, as said you can use several at the same time and/or migrate, KEEPING your group state, contacts, chats, etc, in matrix you are bound to a single home server, and if federation is not allowed between yours and another person's that is it, you need to create a new profile in another server
that is not the case in Delta Chat where servers are replaceable dumb messages relay nodes

> the groups information must be transferred with every message
wrong, have you ever used Delta Chat??? groups work already with state (avatar, description, etc) p2p between members without transmitting whole state every time
and for having admins there is even already some ideas: https://support.delta.chat/t/spec-proposal-super-groups/4644
no need for bots or server-side support

it is a mini-app you send in the chats, ex. in a group of friends, then without needing any hosting or 3rd party service, you can have such a music "share music and stream together" service that only the members of the group can access and use
it will be released in the mini-apps stores where several other mini-apps exist like collaborative text pads, collaborative to-do lists, shopping lists etc.
you access the apps via attachment menu in ArcaneChat & DC

that mini-app works using the real-time p2p API that is already available inside mini-apps and it already has PFS, it is not the same as the communication via email+openpgp that happens in the chat

listening to #music inside #ArcaneChat while the playlist and currently playing song is synchronized #p2p so me and the boys chill listening to the same song at the same time in real-time 👍
all end-to-end #encrypted, with Perfect Forward Secrecy (#PFS), no centralized servers, no #billionaire platform, no #DRM, no logins, no personal data, no age verification, no bullshit, just you, your friends and the chilling vibes

it also has good multi-profile and multi-device support, and it is super easy to migrate from one server to another if needed (obvious because several can be used at the same time)
also groups and channels are totally controlled by the users and independent from the server, hence why it doesn't matter if the server ("home server" in matrix) goes down, and why you can migrate to other servers while keeping all your groups and chats

2026-04-11 17:57:56 UTC

- reply

now matrix is not a good idea
it doesn't matter that delta chat is smtp internally, it works just fine and the UI is more closer to WhatsApp, Telegram etc.
way better than matrix, that is literally what you should never recommend to people to migrate to
besides, Delta Chat is on a completely different superior level when it comes to resilience, it is not just decentralized but it can also use several servers at the same time so if one goes down user keeps receiving messages

if something is wrong I don't see any problem in pointing it out, session has received millions, MILLIONS, this is in the end money that could have flow into better more sustainable projects
there is nothing wrong in pointing out that it is a mistake to have throw so many millions into what now seems to have been just a crypto token scam

and then??? I didn't criticize they ask for donations, I criticized they need so much money to operate, do you even know how much money ArcaneChat have received in donations since its inception???? less than 1000 euros, the point being made here is that the operation cost is much lower
anyways, you are free to use whatever you like

buddy you are a bit out of the loop, ArcaneChat can use several relays at the same time, if arcanechat.me goes down it doesn't matter much, your other relays/nodes will keep working, it is also super easy to migrate from one relay to another
about asking for donations, that has nothing to do with the fact that session is burning thousands per month in server costs while chatmail relays are super cheap to run

continuation:
the i.delta.chat server is not required nor used at all for handling and establishing connection between contacts, it is just a cosmetic fallback to show some hint in the browser when the person opening the link doesn't have the app installed yet and to make the link clickable when sharing in other apps since custom schemes are not usually linkified by apps and social media

2026-04-10 15:54:45 UTC

- reply

not really, the only thing the server is needed for is if you want to open the link in the server, they take down the server now then the links are not worse than signal's sgnl:// links or telegram's tg:// links
in fact, the delta chat invite links are just openpgp4fpr:// links, if you go and open such a link in the browser you will see that the "open chat" button contains the actual openpgp4fpr:// link and you could just copy and share that or just share the QR image

how cool it would be if you could have your own small private social network for a group of friends or for the family only...
but it would be too annoying and complex to have to buy a domain and VPS and host your own social network then your family have to register there etc.
well I have good news for you! you can have your own private social network easily without needing to host any server! right inside your group in #ArcaneChat or #DeltaChat it is called #PixelSocial and works #p2p

and even if the Delta Chat project died today, you would be able to keep using your #chatmail relay servers (or even just classic email servers) while when #Session goes down it seems the app will pretty much stop working properly, that doesn't sounds really decentralized

2026-04-10 10:55:50 UTC

So #Session messenger is shutting down in 90 days
the takeaway is: millions of dollars were dropped into Session, at the end of the day you got a huge machinery that can't even continue without thousands of more dollars being burned every month, is it worth it???
all that money should have gone to more sustainable projects like #DeltaChat, Delta Chat relay servers are SUPER CHEAP to run and require near zero maintenance
