uggghhhhhhh can anyone help me identify some random ass song? I thought it was maybe from a _Star Ocean_ game (a series I hadn't played) but I really can't remember and I don't think it's that.
The intro to the song has a sequence with bells, and the entire thing has a very... darkness of ancient space about it, with synths. I think it was from a game from the late 90s or early 00s, likely PS2 or Dreamcast. Pretty sure it was an RPG? Someone gave me an MP3 of it ages ago.
Anyway, here's me singing a little snippet of the tune. If that sounds at all familiar... I feel like maybe the song had the word "gate" in it, or maybe the game did? I really don't know.

Any recommendations for decent used external SAS units? I have literally filled my tower with drives and need _moar_ space. Something used I can get on the cheap is great, something new that isn't awful is also fine. I need to ideally reclaim some space in the unit, for that matter... “Why would you want to do that, Audrey?” well, couple reasons that it might be interesting (but probably not worth it and complicated as fuck):
1. Reverse engineering of proprietary stacks? Not sure how possible or relevant/useful this would be
2. Shit like QEMU VirGL? If you could emulate a device to pass through, in theory you could install the normal compute and driver stack but handle it however you want on the host side?
3. Opening up usage of CUDA on non-CUDA devices?
4. Curiosity
No idea how realistic any of that is and whether it’s worth it, but it might be interesting to see if anything exists out there. And if it did allow more flexibility in running software with hardware options, that would be neat.

I made a zero context/explanation post about ChatGPT being fascist shit the other week and I stand by it.
I am sure I will eventually expand on that point in a more… verbose manner. But it is a propaganda tool that can be pressed into service as what they think a simulacrum should be, all without a human being. It does nothing efficiently or well, but when your purpose is simply “get rid of others”… well.

and like! Even if it wasn’t an international body of water! A company does not have to follow an EO, especially one about names, I would think? It’s literally not a law. I am not a lawyer, but I’m trying really hard to think of any scenario where a private entity can be ordered to change how they talk about something.
I feel like I see this “an EO said this so it has to happen” as a way to grant more power to the executive branch than it actually has (and bypass the other two bodies). I don’t know whether renaming a piece of geography normally requires a law written by congress (is that normally within the power of the executive branch?) but under no circumstances could forcing a citizen to call it by the new name be in line with the first amendment.
I think that I would really like a primer on what an EO can _actually_ do; I imagine it can be used to modify and order things under the purview or control of the executive branch and no more. Hell, even the EOs to withdraw funding doled out by departments under the executive branch are illegal, apparently, because he cannot decide whether or not to spend the money congress said he must spend.
I feel so weird trying to understand the specifics of constitutional law at the 11th hour here but for ffs, these fucking “they HAVE to follow it!” takes are… I have a hard time assuming they’re saying it in good faith.

I want to scream. All the damage done, all the damage still to come, and all the fallout that will hit the people that can bear it the least. All this was _called_. They knew! The whole time. They knew it was all garbage that didn't work, that didn't do it very well, that didn't need all this. They fired everyone who told them!
And when the layoffs come, they won't hit the C suites that pushed this garbage. And if any 'value' is lost, it's the public that will pay to make them whole again. And it makes me sick. All the human suffering that went into those stupid fucking models and all the misery that will accompany the 'layoffs' and the 'downsizing' and the e-waste, wasted water, wasted carbon...

ALSO I am getting closer and closer to my goal of getting some educational compute going. I wouldn't say I _know_ freeipa or care but I did at least get an NFS w/ automatically mounted home directories going last night, despite my brain's immense desire to just fuck off while doing it.
Ultimately even if it's not strictly HPC or science, I'd like to offer people the chance to play with some technologies that they'd otherwise have to utilize corporate services to experiment with. I dunno; it's something I can do, and I think the more we turn 'the cloud' into something owned and run by individuals (call it 'the fog'? since it's at person height? 😅) the better.
