Ah, sounds like a rack enclosure is the ideal way to do it then? The particular stuff to the gills server isn't in a rack, but so long as there's a SAS hookup I can plug in, there's plenty of headroom and I don't mind having a rack connected to a tower.
I wonder if that's why I haven't found any decent options anywhere: I've been looking for non-rack enclosures...
