Sometimes you don't even need to go that far. If you visit a site like https://www.helsenorge.no/ (our portal for public healthcare) you'll notice that every single web request contains a header named "X-Azure-Ref" so you can find the web request in Azure.

The problem is that in Norway we spend a lot on Windows and 365 licenses as well. But our government also snorts stuff like Azure and Microsoft SQL servers like there's no tomorrow.
Even if they don't buy it directly, when they buy some custom software (from a company like Visma who makes tons of government crapware) you can bet your ass the whole platform runs on Azure.
So nevermind school, even someone like me who only runs Loonix at home, I probably grant Microsoft lots of money simply be existing, so the country can keep stuff like tax collection, payment services, public transit and and my healthcare services up and running.

You wouldn't believe how ingrained Microsoft is here in Norway. From what I've heard we're among the worst, to the point we don't even seem to have track of how much money we give Microsoft in total.

Which states it's around 21 billion NOK for IaaS/PaaS and SaaS. In USD that would be ~$2.1 billion. For a country with only 5.5 million inhabitants.
Or put another way, Norway gives $400/year to Microsoft per citizen. Simply by existing in this country, I am giving Microsoft $400/year outside of my control, thanks to the government.

That's the reason I said "fuck it". They have the correct voltage, but I couldn't actually find anyone selling them. Everything I found was NiMH or NiCd, which are both 1.2V.
The only 1.5V batteries I found to be available were Li-Ion batteries with USB-C ports on them from brands like paleblue and Coast. But I'd rather not buy them unless I have to since they cost a lot more.
However I did find Ni-Zn batteries, which were something I hadn't heard of before. Apparently those are good, but they have the opposite problem, their voltage is 1.6V, so you risk damaging devices which can't handle the higher voltage (and they can't use standard battery chargers)

I have a few devices, most notably a radio which get pissy from the lower voltage. But maybe I'll just have to buy a set or two of paleblue batteries for those devices or something, I'll leave that problem for future quad

Haven't bought batteries in ages, and it seems NiMH is still just the thing everyone uses. I used to be told that eneloops were the best rechargeable batteries, but I dunno if that's true as it's 10 year old info at this point.
I don't have Ikea available, but I found out that their competitor, jysk, now also sells rechargeable batteries (and have for a long time it seems) at the same price. Since they were still open, had tons in stock, and were cheap af, they won. Hopefully I won't have to think about batteries again for years.

Man I'm really excited for the Macbook Neo and for once it feels like waiting a week for the release is actually going to be rough. Haven't been this excited about an Apple announcement since they first announced they were going ARM.
Just like how apple going ARM hopefully meant others were going to copy them and make more ARM computers (although so far laptop manufacturers and windows have utterly failed on that front), I hope the Macbook Neo is going to force budget laptops to actually be decent.
I want a world where finding a cheaper laptop where productivity basics like the screen and keyboard aren't horrible isn't difficult anymore.

God damn. 8GB on the Macbook Neo is going to be ROUGH if it's anything like my 2019 16" Macbook Pro.
On Sequoia my 2019 MBP used about 6GB when idle on the desktop. However after updating to Tahoe it uses ~8GB just chilling on the desktop, ~10GB once I open safari.
And my MPB has a dedicated AMD GPU, so it doesn't even need to use any of the RAM as VRAM, the Neo does use shared memory.
Unless the copy of Tahoe that ships on the Neo is tweaked in some way, that thing is going to have like 25% of its memory pool in swap while doing literally nothing.

I suspect that's part of Apple's strategy honestly.
Hard cap the Neo to 8GB and take less of a profit than normal so they can absorb the mid-range laptop market.
Everyone hates Microsoft and Windows 11, and regular laptop prices are going wild.
I suspect Apple didn't want to let this chance slip, so they want to sell people 8GB machines to get them hooked on macOS and the rest of the Apple ecosystem, then when they want to do anything slightly demanding they'll have to buy a far more expensive machine.

I dunno how macOS' ram usage is though, because 8GB of RAM is rough. On Linux it'd be no problem, on Windows it would be a catastrophe, but I haven't used macOS actively for quite some time.

anyways, today is just another day of "quad has to do extra menial labour because the supposed DNS "expert" at the other end has no idea what they're doing".
It's not like it was some self-taught dude who ran the IT system itself either, it's a large IT consulting firm with employee numbers in the 4-digit range. The DNS record file they sent me made references to things like "customers", "folders" and "groups" so they probably have some platform or tool where they manage hundreds, or maybe thousands of domains.
The company whose domain we helped move have probably been paying out their ass to rent these supposed "professionals" for years on end. Yet after two weeks of begging "please, i just want to talk to one DNS "expert" who knows what a zonefile is. i've been trying to get the zonefile for two weeks at this point" I just had to give up.
The number of times I find out that there's some IT consulting company with 2000 employees and they have 15 "e-mail specialists" that can help us, but when I contact them I have to argue my way through 8 of those specialists before I find the first person who knows what an SMTP is, absolutely terrifies me.

the file was named "example.com.dns" and the first response i gave was a screenshot of the text essentially saying "wtf is this, whatever it is, it's not a dns zone"
to which they replied "sorry, our bad, i got some help from our DNS expert" and then they sent back the exact same file byte for byte but it was named "example.com.txt" this time.
my brother in christ I'M NOT STUPID, i know it's a goddamn text file and i sent you a screenshot of the text contents in the first response, i'm trying to tell you that this text is not in any kind of known standard format. the words in-between in the subdomain and record value aren't even english, they're in fucking Norwegian, there's no way this is compliant to anything.
After waiting almost two weeks for a response to step 0 of a DNS move, I just gave up and I had to spend like 45 minutes reading their garbage DNS export and typing out my own zonefile I could import, just to get this shit over with because my boss doesn't understand DNS either so he's asking ME why moving the records is so annoying.
these bastards have to idea what they're doing, there's like twenty fucking TXT records on their root

god, i just had to rewrite an entire zonefile to take over a domain at work.
previous host didn't even know what the fuck a zonefile was, i just got a txt file with some made up fantasy format, probably exported from whatever dns tool they use.
bouncing e-mails back and forth while waiting for a response is so slow that this shit has been waiting for like two weeks because the old MSP is too incompetent to know what a bloody zonefile is. every time i asked "please just give me an actual zonefile" or "i just want an RFC 1035 file man, i can't import this other shit" they just sent back slight variants of the same weird file.

personally i use some sennheiser accentum headphones because they were cheap and decent enough with ANC.
I also own some Sony wireless earbuds, but I only use them when it's raining because fitting full-size headphones under a hood is a pain, and typically the ANC goes nuts as the mics rub against fabric

Similar to how if you're making some sensor for vehicle speed, you might program it so that if the car is moving at 1000 km/h it assumes something is wrong and asks for recalibration instead.
If a browser gets a URL that's got 5000 characters of get parameters they go "yeah, no decent website should be doing this, something is off"

Who knows, bcachefs is not as new as people thing, it's been in development for ages and /decently/ stable for quite some time. I've occasionally heard of people compiling and using it since like pre-pandemic.
Yet as far as I know, pretty much no distro ever bothered to ship a DKMS module.
I do hope they ship a DKMS if it gets removed from mainline though.

Enterprise IT has become the opposite of why I like IT. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I like IT because it means I can control and understand my own systems and data. I know where they are, how they work and why they would break. If a user clicks "send E-mail" I could know the entire chain of servers and applications it passed through for tagging, spam filtering, archival, virus scans, etc. until it finally left the network directly towards the recipient's provider.
But ever since 2015 or so I'd say, the entire industry has moved away from controlled infrastructure (whether it's on-prem or a VPS) towards just renting everything as a service. I don't know how our E-mail flows anymore, I've got no clue why our cloud connected printers won't print, nor do I know why Teams refuses to display your status correctly. Yet I am expected to manage and fix all of it.
Doing IT no longer means doing IT. It means clicking around in dumbed down control panels to hopefully convince some cloud doodad to do what you need it to. It means trusting Microsoft to never be down, but still taking the blame if they do go down. My days are spent hanging on to the few things I can still manage and understand, like the physical network. But with platforms like Meraki and InstantOn this is also slowly dying.
And that's just on the sysadmin side. I can only imagine how bad it is on the development side where you're expected to crap out new features at an unsustainable rate which barely function, all while having to compete with cheap indian labour.

I can tell you that many helpdesk will often just ship a new password via SMS if you ask.
At our company we have policies to prevent this. But I doubt all my colleagues actually follow them properly, and I'd reckon it's a problem at almost every helpdesk out there. Because most helpdesks are structured with 1. line support first. Which means the people you first hit and who can do basic stuff like manipulate a user's password or MFA, are typically the least skilled IT workers and/or the ones who care the least about actual IT. At the very least they definitely don't bother keeping up with basic infosec best practices.

Yeah, saw that too.
I really wish it was Linux-based rather than Android based. I hate having Android meddling in my gaming console.
And the magnetic D-pad doodad looks like absolute ass.
If this was another $100-ish cheap chinese retro console I'd probably snag it and live with the compromises until something better came along.
But for $669, I really don't want to make massive compromises like having an absolutely trash "D-pad", needing to fiddle with Android (especially being dependent on chinese factory firmware due to the weird hardware) and what seems like pretty bad ergonomics.
I'll have to look at other reviews once it's actually available, but for now I'm leaning very heavily towards "no".
Mostly because it's not a DS emulator, it's trying to do too much weird shit.
If they had instead made it a solid block in the "3DS Configuration", and put a simpler Linux system on it instead, for a somewhat lower price, I probably would have thrown money at it.

I've been tempted to buy MagicX Zero 40 as well. Because hardware fit for DS emulation is borderline non-existant.
But the screen is just too tiny. A single 4" screen to emulate two displays just... doesn't cut it. I've been too spoiled by my DSi XL, so I wouldn't even go back to DS Lite sized screens.
When there's a DS Emulation handheld where the effective size of each screen is at least 3.5" diagonal, then I'll throw plenty of money at it.
Would really prefer it to not be Android powered as well, but dunno how much I can trust china to do that.

I used rtorrent since around 2013 or so. I switched to Deluge in 2017 iirc. But in 2022 I switched back to rtorrent since Deluge had its own issues. rtorrent mostly works well, but it really does like to simply commit seppuku about twice a year for seemingly no reason.

I really don't get the "line always go up" mentality. It's literally just a ponzi scheme on a global scale. Just like an MLM eventually can't get enough people, shit will collapse when we run out of capital. We're already at the point where we try to manufacture virtual capital to make the line keep going up.

basically every printer accepts raw ASCII, "cal > /dev/usb/lp0" should work just fine, i have done similar things before
you can also just "cat file.pdf > /dev/usb/lp0" most of the time because PDFs are modified PostScript, so as long as the pdf is relatively simple and uses no PDF-specific options should be spat right out, no driver needed.

PSA: you can just run the command "cal" in your terminal to get a properly formatted calendar. or "cal -y" for the entire year.
i recently found out that surprisingly few modern linux users seem to be aware of this, and instead keep digging around for a graphical calendar. it's an old unix command so it's typically available on even the most lightweight of systems (like alpine)

It's probably surprisingly common for some company to just bulk order Xboxes off Amazon if they're hosting some gaming event or whatever, or some startups with money wasting offices where nothing productive happens.
And from a store's perspective if you can sell 30 Xboxes and make all your money back so you can restock 35 new Xboxes instead, why wouldn't you?

I wonder how long Windows 11 is going to last.
Windows 10 was supposed to be the "last version of Windows", but only made it 6 years. (2015-2021)
W11 is already halfway through that at 3 years old (2021-2024), which is approximately the time it used to take Microsoft to release new versions (Win7 in 2009, Win8 in 2012, Win10 in 2015).
I'm genuinely curious to see how they'll manage to make Windows 12 even worse than Windows 11 to further ruin my workday and the efficiency of most companies on earth.
Maybe they finally fill it with so much AI crap that it can barely run the desktop at 5fps with a Threadripper and RTX 5090
