En yhtään ihmettele, ettei suomalaisia marjanpoimijoita löydy, etenkin jos isäntäväki on töykeää, työolot hirveitä, marjakartelli polkee palkat ja maksimoi tuotot, palkasta ei jää mitään käteen ja verottaja vie loputkin.
Purra on tässä asiassa totaalisen kuutamolla. Ei kannattaisi kommentoida asioita, joista ei mitään ymmärrä.

Selvittelin hieman lisää yhdistysasioita. Ulkopuolisia ei-jäsenten rahalahjoituksia ei voida kerätä jatkossakaan. Eli kaikki mementomori.socialin palvelinkulut pyritään tulevaisuudessa kattamaan jäsenmaksuilla/jäsenyyksillä. Syitä tähän on muutama:
1. "Vuonna 2026 uuden rahankeräyslupahakemusten käsittelystä Poliisihallituksessa peritään 530 euron suuruinen maksu ja muutoslupahakemuksen käsittelystä 173 euron maksu. Vuosi-ilmoituksen käsittelystä peritään 205 euron maksu."

4. Pienkeräys maksaa 120 euroa 3 kuukauden välein. Matalampi kynnys saada, mutta samat haasteet: kustannukset ja pankkitilivaatimus. Lahjoitusnappi ei silti käy, koska voidaan tulkita jatkuvaksi. "Jos suunnittelet jatkuvaluonteista rahankeräystä, hae toimintaa varten lupa."
Meillä on voittoa tavoittelematon yhdistys, jonka kulut pyritään pitämään nollissa. On aivan posketonta, että pitäisi maksaa satoja euroja pankkitilistä ja luvista ennen kuin pääsee edes ottamaan vastaan lahjoituksia.
Yrittäminen ja yhdistystoiminta ja muutenkin kaikki hyvä ja järkevä tekeminen on tehty Suomessa ihan helvetin vaikeaksi. Suomessa ihminen maksaa mielellään 100 euroa siitä, että naapuri ei saa 10 euroa, koska kuitenkin se kusettaa ja viilaa linssiin.
Toivomme siis paljon jäseniä ja pyrimme tekemään jäseneksi liittymisen äärimmäisen helpoksi.

Interestingly, Meta has been implementing a "tune your algorithm" type of feature, which is surprisingly user-focused. You can select the topics you want to see more of and what you want to see less of, mute words, add your preferences... of course, Meta has their own agenda and wants you to get as hooked as possible so they can make money off you as a product, but I like the idea that it is not completely opaque.
I am building something similar in my Mastodon instance but truly without any monetary goal.
For algorithm haters out there, remember that reverse chronological order is an algorithm too. If you like getting video recommendations on YouTube, PeerTube, or music recommendations in a playlist, that is an algorithm too. I honestly do not understand all the algorithm hate when it is focused on the tech itself rather than commercialism.
The capitalist nature of algorithms is, of course, something to stand against, since it works by exploiting users. But if it is for user benefit without any rotten backstory, algorithms in my world are great.

Kiitos hyvästä vastauksesta. Mukavaa keskustella tästä näin, vaikka ollaan täysin eri linjoilla.
Pointtisi kehitysresursseista mielestäni hieman ontuu. Ensinnäkin avoimen lähdekoodin mallit (esim. jaossa https://huggingface.co ja https://ollama.com) ovat käytännössä aika normielämää devaajilla ja pääsevät kaupallisten mallien tasolle, jos vaan kotoa löytyy tarpeeksi tehokasta laitteistoa (tähän varmaan viittasitkin). Haluan kuitenkin mainita, että DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral ja Llama kilpailevat suoraan OpenAI:n ja Anthropicin kanssa aivan samoilla laskentatehoilla, eikä enää vaadita perus pöytäkonetta kummempaa, itselläkin aika vaatimaton yhden RTX-näytönohjaimen kokoonpano (8GB VRAM). DeepSeekin R1 nimenomaan muutti oletuksen siitä, että kilpailukykyinen malli vaatisi satojen miljoonien budjetin tai jäätävän määrän rahaa tai supertietokoneita. Samoin esim. suomessa TurkuNLP:n avoin kielimalli Poro, joka itselläkin kotikoneellani ajossa. Avoimen lähdekoodin itseisarvo ei ole kiinni siitä miten se on tuotettu avoimeksi tai mitä pyörittäminen vaatii.
Mitä olet mieltä esimerkiksi automaatiosta, jossa on mukana vaikkapa editointietäisyyksiä (Levenshtein), säännöllisiä lausekkeita ja vastaavia perinteisiä algoritmeja, jotka tekevät saman asian kuin GenAI täysin ilman tekoälyä? Itse esimerkiksi olen pari vuosikymmentä tehnyt bash-ohjelmointia, nyt AI helpottaa, parantaa ja tehostaa vanhaa automatisointia.
Iso osa markkinoinnista tosin pyrkii myymään raskasta generatiivista ratkaisua tehtäviin, jotka on jo ratkaistu ysäriltä asti ilman AI:ta ja tässä onkin eittämättä ongelma niin luonnonvarojen kuin resurssioptimoinninkin näkökulmasta, hakataan ikäänkuin kaivinkoneella naulaa kiinni lautaan. Mutta AI:ssa parasta onkin se että työkalulla voi rakentaa työkaluja tai itseään, tämä ei aiemmin ollut mahdollista.

Hyvää pohdintaa. Itse pidän itseäni teknologiamyönteisenä, eli voisi myös sanoa tekoälymyönteisenä nykyään. Harmillisen usein generatiivisesta tekoälystä puhuttaessa puhutaan pelkästään kaupallisten yritysten (OpenAI, Anthropic) tuotteista ja unohdetaan avoin lähdekoodi. Toki itsekin olen esimerkiksi Anthropicin vannoutunut asiakas.
Linus Torvalds vertasi LLM:iä compilereihin, mielestäni yllättävää, että hänkin on ollut asiasta suhteellisen neutraali. Itseäni lähinnä nyppii kun pää on koko ajan pölkyllä aina kun tykkään jostain tuotteesta tai ohjelmoin itse, ja näkyy avoimesti että AI ollut mukana. Koen kuitenkin, että AI on kuten sähkö tai Internet, se on niin valtava kattotermi, että ei voi sanoa sen olevan puhtaasti pahaa ja vastustettavaa tai hyvä ja puolustettava asia. Se on molempia yhtä aikaa ja se tekee tilanteesta haastavan. Itselleni AI on äärimmäisen tehokas työkalu, jota käytän päivittäin. Kuviin ja musiikkiin kieltäydyn käyttämästä.

Just finished "Character Limit" (Conger & Mac, 2024) about how Musk wrecked Twitter, and what's funny is how unremarkable both the world's richest man and the tech he's trying to build really are.
There was nothing genius about any of it. He fired most of the staff overnight, gutted moderation, watched the hate speech and bots he claimed he'd kill flood right back in, and tanked a $44B platform in every possible way. In the end, it was just about power, attention, and owning another rich guy's toy.
Musk doesn't actually want humanity to achieve great things. He's like an adult baby, sucking his thumb and throwing a tantrum whenever he isn't worshipped. The world's richest man and the loneliest internet troll alive, a perfect image of entitlement.
When Trump was banned from Twitter, he was quickly replaced by even bigger man-child. The rise of far-right alt-tech owes a lot to these two clowns. Zuck and Dorsey aren't far behind either.

A tip for users of our experimental instance mementomori.social:
You can enable the algorithmic "For you" feed from the top right corner of the Home feed. When you toggle it on, it will instantly switch to a ranked feed that prioritizes posts based on who you follow, who you comment on, what you like and boost, and what's currently trending across the Fediverse.
Unlike Trending tab, For you -feed is personal. The logic is similar to pre-Musk Twitter but user-focused and not corporate-owned.
The Trending tab remains unchanged, and /explore shows posts from roughly the past 6-12 hours, with a strong focus on the most recent ones. A post that gets massive engagement might stick around a bit longer, but most cycle out within half a day. Your own For you page changes every time you click the menu, refresh the page, or return.

What many people misunderstand about hosting your own content (like this social media instance) is thinking we somehow NEED a big audience or Big Tech involvement.
I'm perfectly fine if the world faded away and it was just the thousand of us here. It's like the early days of the web when we had small forums, nobody missed Reddit back then. Federation is a big plus, not a requirement.
It's the same with websites or IRC for me. I know people use Discord, but I still stick to IRC even if there are only about a hundred of us left. I know people use AI now and website visitors are dropping, but who cares? I still keep doing it for those who like to read.
I don't need the whole world involved for this to feel worthwhile. It's mine, I own it, and I host it for as long as I breathe. After that, it won't matter to me anymore, but I hope other admins keep things running the way I did.

Yes! It's all CSS variables, override the background tokens, easiest via Custom CSS, pasted after the Bird UI CSS so it wins). The main one is --color-bg-primary (the page and columns). For a fully black UI, also set the other neutral surfaces:

Tip: the "accessible" variant already ships a black background (--color-bg-primary: #000), so it's a good reference if you want to see which tokens go dark.

A small request for everyone using Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0, no matter how you installed it: if something looks broken or off, please report it along with your version details (which Mastodon version you are running, which version of Mastodon Bird UI you built, and how you built it, Custom CSS or SCSS in your Mastodon fork).

Quick heads-up for Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0 Custom CSS users: I noticed that the build was only compiling the main mastodon-bird-ui.css file, which left the variant files (light, stars, accessible, accessible-plus) outdated, and the light version wasn't compiling at all. It's now fixed, and all five files are rebuilt and up to date in 4.0.0. I personally use a Mastodon fork with SCSS, so I accidentally overlooked this.
If you're using one of the variants through Custom CSS, re-copy it from dist/: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui/tree/main/dist
If you're using the plain mastodon-bird-ui.css, it was always fine and needs no changes. Sorry for the mix-up!

- "For you" feed (experimental). Open your home column settings and switch on "Ranked order" to try an algorithmic feed: posts ranked by engagement and by who you interact with, fresh content on every refresh, and you'll rarely see the same post twice. Flip on "Include posts from people you don't follow" to discover new accounts beyond your follows. See someone interesting there? Tap the + on their avatar to follow them.
- PageUp and PageDown scroll the page normally again (thanks @npub1yex…magq for the feedback on this one!)
- The navigation is a bit tidier: Collections and Followed hashtags now live under "More".
The For you feed is fully opt-in. Your home feed stays exactly as it was unless you turn it on. Feedback very welcome!

Mementomori.social experienced 57 minutes of downtime earlier today. Here's what happened and what we've done about it.
What happened: A large volume of connections from external crawler/bot IP ranges accumulated in a stuck state (CLOSE_WAIT) inside our web server (nginx). These zombie connections exhausted nginx's connection pool and connections per worker, which caused it to stop accepting new connections entirely resulting in ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED for everyone trying to reach the site.
Why it took 57 minutes: The sole admin available (me) was in a meeting when the issue began, and other admins were unavailable. There was no automated recovery in place to detect and resolve this type of failure.
How it was resolved: Nginx was restarted, which cleared all stale connections and immediately restored service.
What we've done to prevent this:
- Installed and configured Monit, a process monitoring tool that automatically checks all critical services (web, background workers, streaming, database, cache, and nginx) every 2 minutes and restarts them if they become unresponsive
- This means similar outages should now self-heal within minutes, even when no admin is available
I'm really sorry for the disruption. We take the reliability of this instance seriously, and this change should make a real difference moving forward. I'm also planning to apply other mitigations, as some parts of our instance may have been underconfigured.

Server costs come in every month, and right now they come out of my own hobby budget.
We're thinking of setting up an association so anyone who wants to can chip in with an annual membership fee (I need to figure out the actual numbers, but it's probably somewhere between 20 and 50 bucks per year).

Kävin noin 30 muistiinpanosovellusta läpi paro vuotta sitten. Simplenotea käytin 15+ vuotta mutta muotoilujen puuttuminen ja tietoturva harmitti. Sen jälkeen käytin Craftia vuoden ja tämän jälkeen jäin Obsidianiin. Obsidianissa on paras muokattavuus, datan voi omistaa 100% ja virallinen sync toimii hyvin.

Tried Kagi Search for a few days. The issue (like with many alternative search engines) is that it's too slow. I want search results to appear instantly with my 1 Gbps connection, not after 1-2 seconds, but immediately when I press Enter.
Qwant is even worse, and DDG's accuracy isn't great. So I'm sticking with Google, but with aggressive anti-tracking measures.

Joskus tuntuu että olen yksin tässä maailmassa ja ei oikein ole kavereita perheen ja työympäristön ihmisten lisäksi. Fediverse is still the most lively social network I have ever used, since MySpace in 2003. It is better than Twitter or any commercial social media platform ever was. Absolutely love being here.
The most profound thing about it is the international coverage. After the first wave of enshittification in 2010, algorithms took over, and suddenly as a polyglot I was labeled as Finnish. No more visible international posts, people only saw the Finnish ones.
I've noticed the same effect in commercial AI. It ignores the fact that I use English online 99% of the time and still replies to me in Finnish despite all instructions. Algorithms and AI label you. They assign you a language, a status, a certain type of person. There's no changing that.
The Fediverse and Mastodon are delightfully mine, yours, and truly open source - respecting privacy. Nobody's machine can tell you, "You are this, and this is why we do that."
Fuck labelers and the fog machines. Let me be me. Here, on my own server, I can embrace my weirdness and post however I want, how often I want, whenever I want, in whatever language I choose - without constantly worrying about how my identity will be perceived by a machine.

For me, the Fediverse is an international place. What bugs me the most is that algorithms assume I'm Finnish and speak only Finnish. As a result, my posts in other languages seem like they never existed. On this platform, I can freely post in English because my posts won't be filtered out. Internationally, we still have at least one million active users.

Every once in a while, I read my old blog posts that link to other articles or blogs. 99% of those sites are now offline or show a domain-for-sale page. It kind of makes me sad. Most of my own websites are still online after 20+ years. I wonder why they gave up.
That being said, this instance will be online forever - I'll make sure of it. Even after my passing, I want it to live on. My websites have survived even when hosting companies went bankrupt, and so will this instance.

Tässä keskustelussa meni vähän puurot ja vellit sekaisin, sori siitä! 😅 Itse kun olen monen muun tapaan sysadmin täällä, eli pesunkestävä nörtti ja alalla hommissa. Rakennan työkseni verkkopalveluita.
Hetzner on hosting-palveluntarjoaja, eli tarjoaa servereitä, levytilaa, datasalipalveluita, jne. Eli nörteille ja palveluntarjoajille suunnattu. Sinne voi siis viritellä ihan mitä haluaa, ei pelkästään Nextcloudia. Muunmuassa tämä meidän Mastodon pyörii Hetznerin palvelinten päällä.
Nextcloud on avoimen lähdekoodin softa, jonka voi asentaa minne vain. Pcloudista ei ole kokemusta, mutta se on sveitsiläisen firman tuote, ei itse asennettava avoimen lähdekoodin palvelu.
Nextcloudista löytyy myös palveluna käyttöön otettava versio, kuten esimerkiksi jo mainittu Pilviboksi.

Jengi on huolissaan tekoälyn eettisyydestä, mutta ei esimerkiksi somejättien (kuten Meta ja Threads) eettisyydestä. Vain osan teknologiasta tulee olla ekologista ja eettistä? Olen kipuillut tämän Karrin esittämän kysymyksen kanssa vuodesta 2022. Kysymystä on pohdittu Mastodonin alkumetreiltä 2016 mm. kehittäjäpiireissä. On kahta koulukuntaa:
1. Heitä, jotka eivät haluakaan tästä mitään kansojen sulatusuunia, koska mukana tulevat ongelmat (uusi narratiivi)
2. Heitä, jotka haluavat tästä käyttäjäystävällisempää ja jopa algoritmejä ja monetisointiominaisuuksia (vanha narratiivi)
Itse olen kahden vaiheilla. Mastodon ja Fediversumi on radikaalin erilainen some juuri siitä syystä, että se ei ole keskitetty yhden firman alusta. Vaikka Mastodonissa olisi keskitetty ihan paras ja ylivoimaisesti kivoin käyttöliittymä, se ei muuta Fediversumin perusolemusta jossa voi olla vaikka itse rakentamasi härveli jolla some pyörii (tsekkaa esim GoToSocial, Akkoma, Pleroma, Sharkey, jne.) - aina tulee olemaan "huonoja käyttöliittymiä" jne. koska jengillä on vapaus käyttää palveluja miten haluavat. Ja se on tässä samaan aikaan hienointa ja haasteellisinta.
Itselläni vaiheet omaksumiseen menivät jotenkin näin:
1. Onpa Mastodon kökkö - ei se mitään, teen siitä paremman ja helposti lähestyttäävän muille
2. Jes, nyt Mastodon on itselleni hyvä, valistetaanpas muita
3. Ominaisuus puuttuu, ei se mitään - teenpä itse, tosin ominaisuus ei ole muualla käytössä, no tokkopa tuolla väliä
4. Jes, Mastodon gGmbH otti ominaisuuksia käyttöön coreen tai vaikutteita niistä, hyvä juttu kaikille
5. Nyt Mastodon näyttää enemmän Twitteriltä ja helpompi ottaa käyttöön - mutta mites haasteet välittää tietoa ideologiasta ja instanssien valinnasta valtavirralle
6. Oho, aika siistiä että Threads.netin päivitykset näkyy täällä, lisää "myyntipointseja muille" - ...jaa, eivätpä näköjään kehitäkään enää aktiivisesti, vaikka alkuhype ja uho oli kova täysfederointiin
7. Jaa, käyttäjiä ei taida Mastodon kiinnostaa - mutta eipä se oikeastaan haittaakaan, meitä on jo 10+ miljoonaa.
8. Onpa kivaa että tänne tulee porukkaa - mutta tämä maksaa aika paljon jo palvelinkuluissa, missä kohtaa laitetaan ovet säppiin?
Eli tavallaan olen itse jo "luovuttanut", koska olen tehnyt aikalailla kaikkeni alustan "valistustyön" eteen. Mastodonopas.fi on vielä tekeillä, mutta muuten jatkan vaan täällä somettamista omalla painollaan.
PS. Onpa kivaa että Johanna ajattelet työtä ja kustannuksia, arvostan. Tänne mahtuu vielä väkeä ja pistän ovet kiinni sitten kun ei enää mahdu - onneksi meitä suojaa se että hyväksyn jokaisen käyttäjän käsipelillä. Varmaan tuhannen käyttäjän kohdalla pitää alkaa miettimään. Euroviisujen aikaan nähdään miten palvelin todella performoi ruuhkatilanteissa, edelliset 2 vuotta meni vielä hyvin mutta nyt on tuplaten käyttäjiä.
Olisi tosi siistiä pystyä tarjoamaan "instanssi kaikille". Osaaminen skaalautuvien palvelininfrojen suhteen löytyisi, mutta homma vaatisi aika pirusti rahaa ja aikaa. Jonkin somepalvelinfirman perustaminen olisi aika hieno idea ajatuksena, mutta sitten käytännössä pitäisi keksiä jokin tapa rahoittaa toimintaa niin, ettei se menisi samaan suppiloon kuin nykymaailman somepalvelut. Haasteena myös:
1. Kaupallisuudesta ei tykätä Fedissä, joten firman instanssi on monelle punainen vaate
2. Ihmiset harvoin haluavat maksaa somesta, jota pidetään "peruspalveluna" ja ilmaisena. Ihmiset eivät myöskään tykkää lisäpalveluiden ostamisesta. Tuntuisi itseltäkin oudolta somepalvelu, jossa on maksumuuritettu asioita.
Haasteellista on. Summattuna: Mennään näillä. Innostujat innostuu ja muut jääköön ulos. Tykkään tästä näin.

The project management tool Height.app is shutting down, which is a real bummer - our company was one of the early adopters and we have used it for years. Height had one of the best designs I've ever seen, and I had high hopes for it.
This is a reminder that any service can be shut down at any moment, with no safeguards in place. It's also a reminder of the power of open source.
I have a lot of requirements for a project management tool - most notably a solid API, linkable tasks with task IDs, and a good user interface. After this experience, I'd prefer something open source. Maybe Plane.so, looks very similar to Height.app?
Any solid alternatives to tools like Jira, ClickUp, Height, or Favro? I'm open to suggestions.

Kirjoitin tähän pitkän päivityksen politiikasta, mutta pyyhin sen pois. Ei somessa nykyään oikein kannata puhua politiikasta. Erehdyin kerran Mastodonissa pohtimaan ääneen nykymaailman yhteiskunnallista ja poliittista vastakkainasettelua ja sain haistattelut johtopäätöksineen vasemmistolaiselta, koska olen mukamas oikeistolainen. Aikoinaan Twitterissä ja Instagramissa taas sain haistattelua osakseen oikeistolaiselta, koska olen mukamas vasemmistolainen. "Jos et ole puolellamme, olet meitä vastaan" -asennetta löytyy kaikkialta ympärillä. Se harmittaa.
Nykymaailmassa kuitenkin tuntuu siltä, että on kaikista paras valinta olla ylpeä nihilisti, erakko ja misantrooppi. Pitäkää tunkkinne.

Eivät 100% ole tulleet koskaan, jos katsot muiden postauksia. Mastodon hakee vain palvelimilta joita tietää. Meillä tosin on ollut korjaavaa tekniikkaa, eli FediFetcher-niminen työkalu hakee postaukset jälkikäteen. Vain itsellesi tulleet varaukset ovat 100% näkyvissä.
Jatkossa tätä ongelmaa ei ole samassa mittakaavassa.
