We are happy to announce that [@upcloud](https://glitchy.upcloud.world/@upcloud ) is now sponsoring our nonprofit and instance. Since we moved to an association and co-managed structure, we no longer run on @npub1zdf…6u9l's personal Hetzner account. We have started migrating to UpCloud's ultra-fast Helsinki servers with newer hardware. This will improve performance, speed, and future-proof our infrastructure.

We have a chatroom on Matrix, which is an open source end-to-end encrypted messaging platform. It is federated like Mastodon, with different instances. We do not currently provide an open Matrix instance for others than admins (this might change in the future), but there are plenty of instances to choose from.
The room is invite-only for members, but we can send you an invite link.

Nonprofits exist for specific reasons. Usually, they exist to meet social needs and promote the common good, rather than generate financial profit for their owners.
Nonprofit organizations fulfill several important roles in society:

As a non-profit organization we are committed to being as open and supportive as possible. This means that all the code we write and every technique we use are open source and publicly available. Everything related to our members and the way we run the organization and server is also out in the open.
We are not driven by profit. Our only purpose is to ensure the sustainability of our shared goals, such as keeping the instance up and running, rather than putting them in the hands of one person.
As an instance, we are very open-minded and liberal. We do not align ourselves with any political party. Instead, we base the way we operate on safe-space principles and decent human values. We support open bridges and protocols and we do not tolerate extremism or harm of any kind. Harassing people for not using alt text or for using AI is not acceptable to us. Hate increases hate, so we try to respond with kindness. Mementomori.social's number one rule is: Be kind. That principle also extends to our association.
That being said, in the interest of openness, we do use some GenAI-assisted coding. We refrain ourselves from usin GenAI for art, whether visual or musical, in case we ever need those things.
Our official rulebook states that we encourage and support the ethical social web. To us, this means building in public with open source and supporting an open, non-commercial, user-centered social media, the fediverse.

We now have 24 members, and we are happy about the launch so far 🐱 Our goal of making sign up as easy as possible was clearly a success. It takes only a couple of clicks to become a member. There is no bureaucracy, overly complicated manual processing, or paperwork from the board either.
We will continue posting about our nonprofit, and we still have some goals to reach before we are fully self-sufficient. But we will get there, slowly but surely. Perhaps even faster than expected.

Membership sign-up is open and we are already getting great questions from you (might be worth starting a FAQ soon):
Can I register with my social media pseudonym or do I have to use my real name?
You need your legal name. Section 11 of the Finnish Associations Act requires that the membership roster includes each member's full name and place of residence, which means you have to use your official name on the application. This information is only visible to the board and never appears on the public membership list.
There is a separate field for your social media name. On your personal page, you can set a display name, and that is the name that will show to other members if you choose to be listed publicly in the membership roster. If you leave it blank, the name you used when applying for membership will be used instead.

Already decided: you can pay for your membership either monthly (5 €) or annually (60 €).
The current benefits include access to mementomori.social, our Matrix server at chat.mementomori.social, member chats, meeting attendance, and ongoing support from our services. Nothing extra yet - we are just getting started.
The main idea is to get support from members to cover our costs. Maybe we will offer more benefits down the road through member contributions, but we are still new to this.

Our costs are roughly 200 euros per month for a performance optimized, future-proof cluster, and we currently have about 1000 users. Since membership is optional, we do not expect even 10% to join as association members. If we get 40 members, we are covered. Of course, anything is subject to change and we can reconsider the membership fee later, especially if we get more members. Right now we have 3 members, which is us, the board (membership website in progress). @npub185q…wagx
